A local AI chatbot can keep a sensitive prompt and its conversation history on your own device, but “local” is not a complete privacy guarantee. The same application may offer cloud models, web search, plugins, telemetry, automatic updates, or document features that send data elsewhere. Before entering a personal-finance, health, legal, employment, or relationship question, verify the active model, every optional network feature, local storage location, backups, and the provider’s current privacy policy.

Use local inference when keeping prompt content off a third-party server is your priority and your device can run an appropriate model. Use a hybrid workflow only when you understand which requests can leave the device. Treat privacy and answer quality as separate tests: a prompt can stay local while the resulting advice is still incomplete or wrong.

What “local AI chatbot” actually means

Local model inference

In the narrowest definition, the language model runs on your computer or phone. Your text is processed by software and model files stored on that device rather than being sent to a hosted model for each response. A chat history may also be written to local files or a local database. This arrangement can reduce exposure of the prompt’s contents to an outside service, provided the application is really using the downloaded model and no separate feature transmits the conversation.

LM Studio states that messages, chat histories, and documents used with downloaded local models are not transmitted from the system and are saved locally. Ollama’s policy says, “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” Those are statements of each company’s policy, not independent audits and not proof that your particular installation is configured that way. Read the current policy and check the application settings on your device.

One application, several destinations

A desktop chatbot can combine local and online functions. LM Studio distinguishes downloaded local models from cloud models and web search; it also notes that model searches, model downloads, and software updates require internet access. A conversation can therefore start in a local model and then use a networked search or a cloud fallback if you enable it. The word “local” on the product page does not tell you which destination is active for a particular message.

Self-hosted interface versus local processing

A self-hosted web interface can run on a computer you control, but the interface and the model backend are separate components. Open WebUI documents offline and self-hosted deployments in its FAQ and describes chat-data and encryption controls in its security documentation. A self-hosted front end can still be configured to call a cloud model, search service, plugin, or remote database. Confirm both the interface configuration and the model endpoint.

How local, hybrid, and cloud workflows differ

Compare the whole workflow, not just the model’s location. The relevant questions are where the prompt goes, what must be online, who can see stored data, and whether your device and model are suitable for the task.

Workflow Prompt destination Network dependency Data retention and visibility Practical suitability
Downloaded model with local inference Device-only for the selected model, if no online tools or fallback are enabled Internet may still be needed for initial model downloads, searches, and software updates; the chosen model may run offline afterward Chats and documents may be stored on the device; anyone with device or backup access may be able to read them. Provider policies differ on metadata. Depends on the device, model, context size, and question. Check current runtime and model documentation.
Local interface with a cloud model Prompt is sent to the selected cloud provider Online connection is required for inference Retention, account access, logging, and deletion depend on that provider’s terms May offer models or capabilities your device cannot run; quality and limits vary by provider.
Hybrid on-device/cloud system Some requests are handled on-device; others can be sent to a server model Offline operation is limited to tasks the system can complete locally Read the system’s disclosure for server processing, retention, and diagnostics; do not assume another hybrid product works the same way Can balance speed, capability, and privacy, but requires understanding the routing decision.
Conventional hosted chatbot Prompt is processed on the provider’s infrastructure Online connection and provider availability are required Provider policy, account controls, logs, and staff or contractor access determine exposure Often easiest to use, but it does not provide device-only processing.

“Not stated” in a provider’s public materials is not evidence of zero collection. It means you need clarification or a different workflow before treating the service as appropriate for highly sensitive information.

What current privacy statements establish—and what they do not

LM Studio

LM Studio’s Desktop App Privacy Policy, effective June 2026, separates downloaded local-model use from cloud models and web search. It says local messages, history, and documents stay on the system, while model discovery and downloads and software updates need an internet connection. The policy describes the company’s intended handling; it does not independently verify your model selection, firewall, operating-system permissions, backups, or third-party extensions.

Ollama

Ollama’s Privacy Policy, last updated March 2026, says locally processed prompts and responses are not collected, stored, transmitted, or accessible to Ollama. The same policy describes limited device and usage metadata, such as app version and request counts, while distinguishing cloud-hosted models from local processing. Thus “your text is local” and “no information leaves the device” are different claims. Check which model endpoint you selected and whether the application is using a cloud feature.

Apple’s described hybrid path

Apple’s Apple Intelligence & Privacy disclosure says the system first assesses whether a task can be completed on-device. When a server-based model is needed, relevant request data can be sent to Private Cloud Compute. Apple states: “The data sent to and returned by Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple.” This describes Apple’s own architecture and stated controls; it is not a general rule for every hybrid AI service.

Trace a sensitive prompt before you send it

Use this procedure for a new installation and repeat it after major updates or configuration changes. Labels differ by application, so use the current model-selection, privacy, network, and history controls shown in your version rather than relying on an old screenshot.

  1. Classify the question. Remove names, account numbers, exact addresses, employer identifiers, medical record numbers, passwords, and uploaded files unless the information is essential. If a less specific example will answer the question, use that instead.
  2. Identify the active endpoint. Open the conversation’s model selector or connection settings and confirm that the selected model is downloaded on the device. A local interface does not prove that the selected model is local. Record the model name and provider endpoint before typing.
  3. Turn off optional destinations. Disable web search, cloud fallback, remote tools, plugins, connectors, and document-processing services that upload files. If a feature cannot be clearly explained, leave it off for the sensitive conversation.
  4. Check offline behavior. With the model already downloaded, disconnect the device from the internet and send a harmless test prompt. If the application refuses to answer, displays a cloud-only notice, or changes the selected model, it has an online dependency. Reconnect only for downloads or updates from sources you trust.
  5. Find the history location. Determine whether chats are saved automatically, where the files or database reside, and whether exports are created. Local storage is still exposed to other user accounts, malware, system administrators, synchronisation services, and anyone who can unlock the device.
  6. Review backups and syncing. A device backup, cloud drive, browser profile, or shared folder can copy a locally stored transcript to another service. Exclude sensitive chat directories from syncing when appropriate, or use a separate encrypted profile and understand how recovery works.
  7. Separate content from telemetry. Read the provider’s current policy for prompts and responses, chat history, diagnostics, crash reports, device identifiers, app version, and request counts. A policy that excludes prompt content may still permit limited metadata.
  8. Plan deletion and updates. Learn how to delete a conversation and its attachments, clear caches, remove downloaded models, and update the runtime. Updates and model downloads are network events; perform them deliberately and verify their source.

Common failure modes and fixes

The app silently uses a cloud model

Clues: the model name includes a hosted provider, the app requires a login for inference, or the conversation fails when offline. Fix: switch to a downloaded model, verify the endpoint again, and start a new chat after changing it. Do not assume an existing thread moved automatically.

Web search or a tool sends the prompt elsewhere

Clues: citations appear from live websites, a tool panel reports a remote action, or a document connector asks for permission. Fix: disable those features for sensitive work, or rewrite the question without confidential details before using them.

Local history is readable through backups

Clues: chat files appear in a synchronised folder, a backup administrator can restore them, or another user account can open the application profile. Fix: move storage to an access-controlled location, encrypt the device and backups, limit operating-system accounts, and delete old exports.

Metadata remains after content stays local

Clues: the policy mentions app version, diagnostics, request counts, crash data, or account identifiers. Fix: decide whether that metadata is acceptable, turn off optional diagnostics where the application allows it, and use network controls if your threat model requires stricter isolation.

A downloaded model or update is untrustworthy

Clues: the file comes from an unknown mirror, the checksum is missing, or the application requests unexpected permissions. Fix: download software and models only from sources you trust, keep an inventory of what you installed, and avoid opening sensitive files in an unverified runtime. Local inference reduces a prompt’s network exposure; it does not remove software-supply-chain risk.

The answer sounds confident but is unsuitable

Clues: the model cannot cite an authoritative source, invents a regulation, contradicts itself, or gives a precise financial, legal, or medical instruction without context. Fix: treat the output as a draft for questions and possibilities. Verify consequential claims with the relevant government agency, contract, financial institution, licensed professional, or other authoritative source. Privacy does not establish accuracy.

Choosing a workflow for personal-finance questions

Use device-only inference when confidentiality dominates

Local inference is the sensible starting point for a question containing a detailed household budget, debt history, tax documents, account exports, or another person’s information—provided you can verify that the model and all enabled features remain on-device. Redact identifiers first and protect the device and its backups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a hybrid workflow when capability is necessary

A hybrid system may be reasonable when the local model cannot handle the task and the question can be minimised or anonymised. Read the specific provider’s routing and retention disclosure, identify what data leaves the device, and avoid uploading original documents unless you have a clear reason and acceptable terms.

Use a hosted service only with deliberate disclosure

For a low-sensitivity question, a hosted chatbot may be convenient. Before submitting anything, review account sharing, history controls, retention, training or improvement settings, deletion procedures, and the provider’s jurisdiction. Never paste passwords, full payment-card numbers, authentication codes, or an unredacted identity document.

Match the model to the device and task

No universal hardware threshold or model-quality ranking is established here. Check the current documentation for the exact model and runtime, including supported operating system, memory, storage, context limits, and acceleration. A device that can technically start a model may still be too slow or constrained for long documents. Test with non-sensitive material first.

A practical privacy-and-quality checklist

  • Confirm the conversation uses a downloaded local model, not a cloud endpoint.
  • Check web search, cloud fallback, plugins, tools, connectors, and document uploads individually.
  • Read the current policy for prompt content, responses, history, diagnostics, and metadata as separate categories.
  • Locate local chat files, caches, exports, and backups; restrict access and encrypt where appropriate.
  • Use airplane mode or another controlled offline test to verify the workflow after setup.
  • Download models and updates from trusted sources and keep the runtime patched.
  • Redact information that is not needed to answer the question.
  • Verify high-stakes answers with an authoritative source or qualified professional.

The decision in one sentence

Choose a local chatbot only after you have verified the active endpoint and data path; choose a hybrid or hosted path only when its extra capability justifies the specific, understood exposure. In every case, protect local files and backups and judge the answer independently of where it was processed.
