Short answer: eBay Money Back Guarantee can help an eligible buyer when an order never arrives, arrives damaged or faulty, is materially different from its listing, or the seller fails to honor the return terms shown on the listing. It is not automatic insurance, a product warranty, or a guarantee that every dispute will be decided for the buyer. Seller protections are separate and conditional: they can limit certain losses or claims only when the seller, listing, shipment, evidence, and transaction meet eBay’s requirements.
What eBay buyer protection generally covers
For transactions completed on a U.S. eBay site, the main buyer remedy is the eBay Money Back Guarantee. eBay says it applies to most transactions, but eligibility rules, exclusions, deadlines, payment requirements, and category-specific provisions still apply. The policy for a purchase can depend on the eBay site where checkout occurred, so do not assume that a rule from another country applies to a U.S. order.

In practical terms, the guarantee is a process for resolving an eligible transaction problem, not a promise that eBay will accept every complaint. Buyers generally must have paid through eBay at checkout with an eligible payment method and must follow the reporting, return, and timing instructions in the live policy.
Does eBay buyer protection cover a damaged or misdescribed item?
Usually, yes, when the damage or discrepancy was not clearly disclosed and the transaction otherwise qualifies. “Not as described” can include receiving the wrong model or color, receiving an item that is broken or faulty when the listing did not disclose that condition, or receiving something materially different from the photographs and written description.

Evidence should connect the problem to the listing. Save screenshots of the title, description, condition field, photos, options selected, and any disclosed defects. Photograph the packaging and the item as soon as you open it. Keep messages in eBay’s system rather than moving the dispute to an unrecorded channel.
The parties can sometimes agree to a different remedy. For example, a seller might send a replacement or offer a partial refund while the buyer keeps the item. That outcome is an agreement, not a guarantee that eBay will order a particular settlement. If the parties cannot agree, eBay may review the listing and the evidence and decide what remedy the policy allows.
Can you return an eBay purchase if the seller says “no returns”?
A “no returns” setting primarily addresses buyer remorse. It does not normally eliminate a buyer’s rights when the item is damaged, faulty, wrong, or materially not as described under the Money Back Guarantee. A seller cannot turn an inaccurately described or damaged shipment into a final sale simply by selecting no returns.

The distinction is the reason for the return:
- Covered problem: The item is not received, arrives damaged or faulty, is the wrong item, or materially differs from the listing. The Money Back Guarantee process may still require a return and refund even when the listing says no returns.
- Remorse: You changed your mind, no longer need the item, or ordered the wrong size. Your right to return depends on the listing’s stated policy, including its allowed window and shipping allocation.
Return-shipping responsibility also follows that distinction. For an item that does not match the listing, the seller generally pays the return shipping. For a remorse return, responsibility follows the listing’s return terms. Do not mail an item back using an address or method supplied outside the eBay case unless the case instructions authorize it; doing so can make tracking and eligibility harder to establish.
What happens if an eBay order never arrives?
You can report an item-not-received problem after the estimated or actual delivery or collection date has passed. The policy generally allows the buyer to report it within 30 calendar days after that date. The date is tied to the order, not to the day you first become concerned, so check Order details before opening the request.
- Confirm the date and address. Open the order and check the estimated delivery or collection date, the shipping address, and the tracking history.
- Report the problem through the order. Select the item-not-received option in eBay’s help or resolution flow after the delivery date has passed.
- Allow the seller to respond. eBay’s policy gives the seller up to three business days to provide tracking or delivery information, an update, or a refund.
- Review the response. A tracking event showing delivery to the address in Order details may resolve the case against the buyer. If the response does not resolve the problem, use the option to ask eBay to step in.
- Keep the case in the platform. Do not close the request merely because a seller promises a later refund; closing it can limit the available escalation path.
eBay may step in itself in some circumstances. The policy’s deadlines control, so a buyer who waits beyond the reporting or escalation window can lose access to the guarantee even when a shipment is genuinely late.

What delivery evidence does eBay consider?
For ordinary shipping, the central question is whether the seller can show successful delivery to the address in Order details. Integrated tracking, a delivery scan, and a matching address are stronger evidence than an informal message saying that a package was left somewhere else. Sellers should upload tracking through eBay and ship only to the address attached to the order.

Authenticity Guarantee shipments have additional delivery-evidence requirements. eBay identifies an integrated tracking number, a delivery scan at the authenticator, a date and matching address, and signature confirmation for orders totaling $750 or more. That $750 threshold is a policy requirement for the described authenticated-shipment scenario, not a universal signature rule for every eBay order. Authentication also creates category-specific rules, so read the instructions attached to that order.

How long does an eBay seller have to respond to a return?
For a return request, eBay generally gives the seller three business days to respond. The seller can provide return instructions, offer another permitted resolution, or issue a refund where appropriate. If the request is not resolved, the buyer can ask eBay to step in. In some cases eBay may act or issue a refund without requiring the item to be returned.
Buyers should follow the case instructions exactly, including the return address, shipping method, and tracking deadline. Sellers should answer inside the case rather than relying on a separate message thread. A delayed response can cause eBay to decide using the information already available.
What does eBay seller protection cover?
Seller protection is not the mirror image of the Money Back Guarantee and is not a blanket defense against refunds, chargebacks, or poor outcomes. It is a set of conditional protections that may apply to qualifying Money Back Guarantee cases, payment disputes, and particular shipping situations.

Eligibility can depend on the seller’s performance status, the listing’s terms, the label used, the transaction facts, and the type of claim. For example, eBay states that sellers who are not Below Standard may qualify for specified protection on listings that offer free returns. That statement does not mean every seller with free returns is protected from every deduction or claim; the other policy conditions still have to be met.
eBay also describes a situation in which it reimburses a seller when an item shipped with an eBay label is delivered after the seller has already issued a refund. The exact requirements and reimbursement process are policy-dependent. A seller should retain the label record, acceptance scan, tracking events, refund timestamp, and case communications.
A no-returns setting is not seller protection. It does not normally defeat an eligible damaged, faulty, wrong, or not-as-described claim. Likewise, merely handing a parcel to a carrier does not prove delivery or satisfy every seller-protection condition.
Buyer protection versus seller protection: the distinctions that decide cases

Important exclusions, limits, and special cases
- Eligibility is not automatic. Missing a deadline, using an ineligible payment route, or failing to follow the return procedure can defeat an otherwise sympathetic claim.
- Category rules can override the general explanation. Authenticity Guarantee final-sale purchases have special treatment. For some final-sale items, a mismatch claim may not qualify, while shipping damage or failure to honor a stated return policy may still qualify. Check the live category policy.
- Counterfeit findings carry obligations. If eBay determines that an item is counterfeit, it may require cooperation with disposal. A buyer must not resell an item eBay has determined to be counterfeit.
- Returned goods must generally be in the condition received. If a buyer uses, damages, or returns an item with missing parts, the seller may be able to deduct the resulting loss in value under the policy.
- No double recovery. If a buyer files a chargeback or another protection claim with the payment provider, eBay may close the corresponding open eBay request. The buyer cannot then open another eBay item-not-received or return request for the same transaction.
- Not a product warranty. eBay states: “eBay Money Back Guarantee is not a product warranty.” It does not replace a manufacturer warranty or expand the product’s promised lifespan.
- Currency losses are outside the guarantee. The policy does not cover exchange-rate losses imposed by a buyer’s bank, card issuer, or payment service provider.
Practical checklists
For buyers
- Check the delivery or collection date in Order details and calendar the applicable reporting deadline.
- Save the listing, condition description, selected options, photos, and seller messages.
- Photograph damage, packaging, labels, serial numbers, and missing parts immediately.
- Open the correct item-not-received or return request through the order, not through an unrelated message.
- Use the provided return label or instructions and keep the tracking receipt.
- Do not pursue a second eBay request after starting a chargeback or payment-provider claim.
For sellers
- Ship to the address in Order details and upload integrated tracking.
- For pickup, use the eBay QR scan or six-digit code when available.
- Answer return and non-delivery requests within three business days.
- Keep acceptance scans, delivery scans, package photos, item-condition records, and refund timestamps.
- Read the conditions attached to your performance status, free-returns listing, label, and claim type before assuming protection applies.
- When issuing a refund, document why and when it was issued in the case record.
Bottom line: protection is conditional and evidence-driven
eBay’s buyer protection is strongest when a buyer paid through an eligible eBay checkout, identifies a covered problem promptly, and can show what happened. A seller’s no-returns setting does not normally defeat a genuine damaged, faulty, wrong, or materially misdescribed-item claim, while a change-of-mind return remains governed by the listing. Seller protection can reduce specific losses, but only when its detailed requirements are met. Because eBay can change deadlines, exclusions, and category rules, read the live U.S. policy attached to the transaction before relying on any deadline or remedy.
