Pinterest said on September 10, 2018, that more than 250 million people used its platform each month, up from approximately 200 million in September 2017. That implies roughly 25% year-over-year growth. More than half of users and 80% of new sign-ups were outside the United States, making the announcement as much an international-growth story as a user-count milestone.
The figure was a company-announced global monthly active user (MAU) count, not a quarter-end earnings table or an independently audited total. It showed reach, but not by itself daily engagement, profitability, advertising efficiency or the number of registered accounts.
What Pinterest announced on September 10, 2018
Pinterest announced that it had surpassed 250 million monthly active users worldwide. An MAU is a person active at least once during a defined month; it is not a simultaneous-user count, a daily-user count or a lifetime total of registered accounts. The contemporaneous reports did not provide the later formal methodology used in Pinterest’s regulatory filings, so the most precise wording is that Pinterest said it had passed 250 million MAUs.
Compared with the approximately 200 million users Pinterest reported for September 2017, the increase was about 50 million people, or roughly 25%. Because the starting figure was itself described as approximate and the announcement was a current milestone rather than a standardized quarter-end disclosure, the growth rate should also be treated as approximate.

Why the milestone mattered
A visual-discovery business, not only a social network
Pinterest was positioning itself as a visual-search and planning service. People save images and links as “Pins” to boards, then return to ideas for recipes, home projects, fashion, travel and purchases. That behavior gives the service a different commercial context from an interruption-driven social feed: inspiration can occur before a buying decision, and saved content can remain useful long after publication.
Contemporaneous coverage attributed approximately 175 billion Pins to the platform, up 75% year over year, and more than 1,500 employees, up 32%. Those figures describe content volume and company scale; neither is a substitute for MAUs. TechCrunch reported the figures.

International growth was the headline within the headline
Pinterest said more than half of its users were outside the United States and that 80% of new sign-ups came from outside the country. That acquisition mix expanded the potential audience quickly, but international scale was not equivalent to U.S. monetization. In its second-quarter 2019 results, Pinterest reported 85 million U.S. MAUs and 215 million international MAUs, illustrating how much of the subsequent base was international. Pinterest’s Q2 2019 release
Later disclosures showed that U.S. users generated substantially more average revenue per user than international users. For investors, advertisers and analysts, the central question was therefore whether Pinterest could turn fast global audience growth into comparable commercial value, not simply whether the MAU total kept rising.

How Pinterest intended to monetize the audience
Pinterest’s model combined advertising with product discovery. Promoted Pins, video advertising, catalogs, product Pins, shopping formats, the Pinterest Tag and conversion tools were designed to help brands appear while people were researching and planning. Pinterest’s filings described commercial content from brands and retailers as central to the platform and emphasized moving users from discovery toward action. The 2019 annual filing and Pinterest’s 2023 Investor Day materials provide that longer-term context.
- Audience scale: 250 million MAUs made Pinterest large enough to matter in media planning.
- Interest signals: Saves, searches and boards could indicate what users were considering.
- Commercial intent: Planning behavior may bring a user closer to a purchase, but intent is not a completed transaction.
- Revenue quality: Revenue per user, conversion measurement and advertiser retention determine whether reach becomes a durable business.
Thus, the milestone was evidence of distribution, not proof of profitability or advertising efficiency.

The pre-IPO significance
Contemporaneous reporting put Pinterest’s private valuation at approximately $12.3 billion after a reported $150 million financing round. Reports also discussed a possible 2019 IPO and a company expectation of reaching $1 billion in annual revenue. These were private-market and management expectations at the time, not guaranteed outcomes. The September 2018 coverage linked the user milestone to that anticipated public-market story.
Subsequent filings provide a firmer financial reference point: Pinterest reported approximately $755.9 million of 2018 revenue, compared with $472.9 million in 2017. Pinterest’s IPO-era annual report supports those figures. The 250-million milestone strengthened the scale narrative ahead of the IPO, but it did not itself cause the listing or establish a valuation.
What happened after 250 million
| Period | Reported global MAUs | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| September 2018 | More than 250 million | Company-announced milestone during the quarter, not necessarily a quarter-end metric |
| Q4 2018 | 265 million | Later disclosure in Pinterest SEC materials |
| Q2 2019 | 300 million | Formal quarterly company disclosure |
| Q3 2019 | 322 million | Compared with 251 million in Q3 2018 |
| Q4 2019 | 335 million | Reported in Pinterest’s 2019 annual filing |
Sources for the later figures include the SEC investor presentation, Q2 2019 results, Q3 2019 results and the 2019 annual filing. Together they show that the September announcement was consistent with the standardized numbers that followed.
How to interpret the number accurately
- It was global: Do not rewrite 250 million as 250 million U.S. users.
- It was monthly: Someone active once during the month could count; the figure says nothing by itself about daily frequency.
- It was company-reported: The contemporaneous reports did not establish an independent audit. Later filings explain that Pinterest calculated MAUs from internal account-activity data. See the 2019 filing.
- It was not a ranking: Comparisons with other platforms require matching dates, regions and user definitions.
- It was not a profitability measure: MAU growth cannot establish earnings, cash flow, retention quality or advertiser return.
Where Pinterest stands in current context
The 250-million figure is historical. Pinterest’s current corporate pages describe a worldwide audience above 600 million; its newsroom lists 631 million. Those current company figures should not be mixed with the September 2018 announcement or used to backfill what Pinterest had at that date. Pinterest Investor Relations and the Pinterest Newsroom contain the current descriptions.
What the milestone meant for investors and marketers
For investors, the announcement established that Pinterest had achieved meaningful global distribution before its public listing. For marketers, it signaled a sizable environment for visual creative, product catalogs and discovery-led campaigns. The business case still depends on execution: relevant creative, accurate product data, conversion tracking, geographic reach and the revenue generated by each audience segment.
The measured conclusion is straightforward: Pinterest’s September 10, 2018 announcement confirmed a major global scale milestone and a rapidly internationalizing audience. It did not, on its own, prove that Pinterest was profitable, that users were highly engaged every day, or that international growth would monetize like the U.S. base.
