When the company’s presence was reported on October 14, 2024, the office had already been operating for several months, OpenAI listed three Seattle-area openings, and LinkedIn-based reporting estimated roughly 80 employees in the region.
By 2026, that modest presence had grown into a large Bellevue operation with reported capacity for more than 1,000 people. The expansion put OpenAI closer to Microsoft’s Redmond headquarters and deeper into one of North America’s established technology and engineering markets.

What OpenAI opened in Bellevue in 2024
OpenAI opened an office in Bellevue, Washington, during 2024 and confirmed that it had been operating for several months by the time GeekWire reported on it in October. The move was part of a broader expansion beyond San Francisco, including additional hiring in the United States and internationally.
The initial Seattle-area operation was relatively small by the standards of major technology companies. GeekWire cited LinkedIn data estimating approximately 80 OpenAI employees in the region and noted three Seattle-area positions on the company’s careers page at the time. That figure was an estimate rather than an audited company disclosure, and it should not be reused as a current headcount.

The precise location matters: the office was in Bellevue, on the Eastside of the Seattle metropolitan area—not in Seattle proper and not on Microsoft’s campus.
GeekWire’s October 2024 report described the office as a way for OpenAI to access the area’s engineering talent while operating near Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond.
Why Bellevue?
Bellevue offered OpenAI several advantages that San Francisco alone could not provide.
A deep engineering labor pool
The Seattle region has long supported large populations of software, cloud, infrastructure, security, data, and artificial-intelligence workers. Microsoft’s presence in Redmond and Amazon’s presence in and around Bellevue helped create an unusually dense technology labor market, supplemented by satellite offices from companies based elsewhere.
For OpenAI, that talent pool was relevant beyond academic AI research. Building and deploying AI products requires software engineers, infrastructure specialists, data scientists, security teams, product engineers, and technical staff who can work directly with enterprise customers.
Proximity to Microsoft
Microsoft’s principal headquarters campus is in nearby Redmond. Bellevue and Redmond sit in the same Eastside technology corridor, but they are separate cities and separate locations. OpenAI did not move into Microsoft’s headquarters or share Microsoft’s campus.
The practical description is that OpenAI established a Bellevue office near Microsoft’s Redmond headquarters—a short drive away in the same regional technology market. Microsoft’s own Redmond campus fact sheet identifies Redmond as the location of Microsoft’s headquarters campus.

An established corporate center
Bellevue is a major Eastside business center with office buildings, transportation connections, housing, restaurants, and services suited to a growing technology employer. Those features can make recruiting and operating easier than building an entirely new presence in a less-developed market.
The region’s technology-hub rankings also helped frame the decision, although rankings are time-specific. A statement that Seattle ranked highly among North American technology hubs should be tied to the ranking and year being discussed, rather than treated as a permanent or objective status.
The Microsoft-OpenAI relationship behind the geography
Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI made the Bellevue-Redmond proximity especially notable, but proximity does not prove that Microsoft directed OpenAI’s office decision.
Microsoft announced a $1 billion investment and an exclusive computing partnership with OpenAI on July 22, 2019. The agreement focused on Azure cloud infrastructure and building new AI supercomputing technologies. Microsoft later announced a new multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment and expanded collaboration in January 2023.
That relationship made Microsoft an important investor, cloud partner, infrastructure provider, and distributor of OpenAI technology. It also meant that OpenAI was establishing a physical presence close to one of its most important strategic partners while recruiting from the same regional technical workforce.
Still, the office should not be described as a Microsoft-controlled operation or as evidence that the companies shared a campus. The available reporting supports a combination of factors: Microsoft proximity, local engineering talent, and Bellevue’s established business environment.
Microsoft’s original announcements provide the partnership chronology: the 2019 partnership announcement and the 2023 partnership expansion. Microsoft subsequently announced further changes and clarifications in 2025 and 2026. Those later announcements are useful context for the relationship’s evolution, but they should not be projected backward as the proven cause of the 2024 office choice: October 2025 update, February 2026 joint statement, and April 2026 update.

What the initial hiring said about OpenAI’s plans
The 2024 hiring snapshot suggested that Bellevue was intended to be more than a nominal address. OpenAI was adding Seattle-area jobs while expanding its overall headcount outside San Francisco.

Current evidence points to a much broader regional mandate. As of the August 18, 2026 research check, OpenAI’s careers site showed Seattle-based roles across applied AI engineering, core experimentation, data science, infrastructure, security, product engineering, and forward-deployed work.
That does not mean every job labeled “Seattle” is physically based in Bellevue, and the careers page does not provide a reliable regional headcount. But the range of roles supports the interpretation that the hub serves product development, infrastructure, and customer-facing deployment—not only research.
How the Bellevue presence expanded after 2024
The original office became the first chapter of a much larger regional commitment.

The additional space had previously been associated with Microsoft occupancy, according to the commercial-real-estate reporting. That detail reinforces the companies’ presence in the same corridor, but it does not mean OpenAI occupied Microsoft’s Redmond headquarters.
GeekWire reported that the resulting Bellevue footprint reached roughly 296,000 square feet and could support more than 1,000 employees. CoStar-based reporting put the footprint closer to 272,000 square feet. In March 2026, OpenAI officially opened the larger Bellevue office. GeekWire reported that approximately 250 regional employees initially used the space and that it could ultimately accommodate as many as 1,400 people.
Capacity is not the same as staffing. Office space includes meeting rooms, laboratories, event areas, amenities, support functions, circulation space, and room for future growth. A capacity estimate does not prove that OpenAI employed 1,400 people in Bellevue or had committed to filling the space immediately.

OpenAI’s expansion adds another high-profile AI employer to a region already anchored by Microsoft, Amazon, and a large network of technology companies. The likely effects are significant, but they should be described as implications rather than guaranteed outcomes.
More competition for specialized workers
OpenAI can increase competition for senior engineers, infrastructure specialists, security professionals, data scientists, and applied-AI workers. That may benefit workers with scarce skills, while making recruiting more difficult for smaller companies and established employers competing for the same people.

Potential effects include higher compensation pressure, more employee movement between firms, and increased demand for recruiters, contractors, technical vendors, and specialized services. None of those outcomes can be attributed to OpenAI alone without additional labor-market evidence.

A stronger signal for Bellevue’s office market
A large lease by a prominent AI company is a positive signal for Bellevue landlords and developers, especially after the remote-work shift created elevated office availability and uneven recovery across the Seattle region.
It would be an error, however, to treat one major lease as proof that Seattle’s office-market problems are over. Regional market reports continue to show vacancies and an uneven recovery. OpenAI’s transaction is one favorable deal within a much larger market, not a complete reversal of commercial-real-estate trends. A more visible Eastside AI cluster
OpenAI’s presence may help reinforce Bellevue’s position as an Eastside technology center. A large AI employer can attract startups, vendors, investors, recruiters, and workers, creating network effects beyond the company’s own payroll.

The limits are equally important. A large lease does not guarantee a matching number of local jobs, and employee capacity does not establish actual occupancy. The long-term economic effect will depend on hiring, office utilization, compensation, supplier spending, and whether other companies follow.

- Bellevue is not Seattle. “Seattle area” describes the broader metropolitan market; Bellevue is the precise city.
