For NRI and PIO securities-market KYC, SEBI’s May 2024 FAQ lists a copy of a passport, PIO Card or OCI Card, plus overseas address proof. Digital KYC is allowed under rules similar to those for domestic clients, but the bank, broker or mutual fund you choose may have its own document format and onboarding steps. Prepare the core evidence, then confirm the provider’s requirements before submitting it.
Which documents does SEBI list for NRI KYC?
SEBI’s May 2024 KYC FAQ says: “For NRI / PIO, copy of passport / Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) Card / Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) Card and overseas address proof are required.” The FAQ identifies this as answer 33. Read SEBI’s KYC FAQ.

- Identity evidence: a copy of your passport, or a PIO Card or OCI Card, as applicable.
- Address evidence: proof of your overseas address.
- PAN particulars: keep these available for the provider’s onboarding process. If you are relying on the specific PAN-Aadhaar exemption described below, complete the required status update first.
The FAQ establishes the core evidence, not a universal list of acceptable address-proof documents, certification rules or document-recency limits. Ask the institution handling your application which forms it accepts and whether copies need certification or another format. Preparing the listed documents does not guarantee that an institution will approve the application or prevent delays.

KYC verifies identity and address. It is separate from the accounts used to hold securities, place trades or move money. SEBI’s investor education page describes three account functions: a demat account with a SEBI-registered depository participant holds securities electronically; a trading or broking account with a SEBI-registered broker is used to buy and sell on exchanges; and a bank account is used to make or receive securities-market payments. Which account relationships you need depends on your investment route. The Ministry of External Affairs’ Overseas Indians FAQ says NRI/PIO investors seeking shares or debentures should approach a designated authorized-dealer bank branch administering PIS to open an NRE/NRO account for routing investments. The same FAQ says NRI/PIOs may invest in Indian mutual fund schemes without special RBI approval. These are high-level descriptions, not a guarantee that every current share purchase uses an identical route. Ministry of External Affairs FAQ on Overseas Indians.
How to prepare before submitting your application
- Choose the investment route. Establish whether you are applying for shares or debentures, mutual funds, or another investment before asking what accounts and paperwork are needed.
- Gather the core KYC evidence. Prepare the relevant passport, PIO Card or OCI Card copy and overseas address proof identified by SEBI.
- Check the provider’s document rules. Ask the chosen bank, broker or mutual fund which address-proof documents it accepts, whether it requires certification, and whether there are format or recency requirements. The official FAQ does not establish one universal checklist for every provider, country and investment type.
- Confirm the onboarding channel and any additional forms. Ask whether the provider handles your application digitally, in person or through document submission, and whether it requires other forms. Digital KYC is permitted under rules similar to domestic-client rules, but the provider’s workflow still matters.
- Clarify funding and account details. Ask which bank account details the provider accepts and whether the intended funding is repatriable or non-repatriable. The MEA FAQ provides NRE/NRO context but not an exhaustive, current provider-by-provider funding checklist.
Can an NRI complete KYC online?
SEBI’s May 2024 FAQ says digital KYC for NRIs follows rules similar to those for domestic clients. That supports the availability of digital KYC, but it does not establish that every provider offers a fully online process for every country, application or later account change. Confirm the channel and steps with the institution you select.
A separate SEBI document issued on October 23, 2025, is a draft consultation proposing relaxation of India geo-tagging for NRI client re-KYC or KYC modification through digital onboarding or video client identification. A draft proposal is not evidence that a relaxation took effect as a final rule. Do not rely on it as confirmation that every KYC update can be completed from abroad. SEBI’s October 2025 draft consultation.
Do NRIs need to link PAN with Aadhaar?
SEBI says an NRI who does not have Aadhaar is exempt from PAN-Aadhaar linking only after updating non-resident status in the Income Tax portal. The exemption is not automatic. This statement is limited to the case SEBI describes: an NRI without Aadhaar who updates non-resident status. If that applies to you, make the status update rather than assuming your NRI status alone activates the exemption. SEBI’s May 2024 KYC FAQ.
Quick Recap

Common avoidable sources of delay
- Assuming one document list works everywhere: SEBI identifies the core NRI/PIO evidence, but provider-specific acceptance, certification and format requirements are not set out as a universal checklist in the FAQ.
- Submitting address proof without checking acceptance: ask the institution which overseas-address documents it accepts and whether it applies recency or certification rules.
- Confusing KYC with account setup: identity documents do not replace the demat, trading or bank account arrangements relevant to your investment route.
- Assuming the Aadhaar exemption applies automatically: SEBI’s stated exemption requires an NRI without Aadhaar to update non-resident status in the Income Tax portal.
- Treating a draft as an operative rule: the October 2025 geo-tagging document is a proposal, not by itself confirmation of a final change.
