Microsoft Office 2021 is a genuine one-time-purchase desktop suite, but it is no longer Microsoft’s newest perpetual edition. It remains useful if you already own a legitimate license or find an authorized copy at a substantial discount. New buyers should compare it with the newer Office Home 2024 and with Microsoft 365 before paying.
Microsoft’s current consumer store emphasizes Office 2024 and Microsoft 365, and it does not provide a reliably verifiable current U.S. retail price for every Office 2021 edition. Treat old “MSRP” figures and unusually cheap marketplace keys with caution.
What Microsoft Office 2021 is
Office 2021 is Microsoft’s perpetual, non-subscription release of classic desktop productivity applications. “One-time purchase” means you pay once for that version; it does not promise free upgrades to Office 2024 or future releases. The suite can receive security and quality updates during its supported period, but it does not receive Microsoft 365’s continuous stream of new features.
A retail license is generally intended for installation on one PC or Mac. Office 2021 does not include Microsoft 365 benefits such as a OneDrive storage allowance, Exchange Online mailbox, SharePoint Online, or an ongoing subscription entitlement. See Microsoft’s Office 2021 FAQ and Office versus Microsoft 365 comparison.

Professional 2021’s retail application list is described on Microsoft’s product page. Access and Publisher are Windows-only considerations; a Mac package should not be advertised as including them. Professional Plus and Standard are licensing-channel names commonly used for organizational deployments. Microsoft’s licensing reference explains why they are not interchangeable with consumer retail editions.
Office 2021 prices and availability
What Microsoft sells now
As of August 18, 2026, Office 2024 is the successor to Office 2021 in Microsoft’s consumer perpetual lineup. The official Office Home 2024 page showed $149.99 in one store state and $179.99 in another during August 2026. Those are observed page signals, not a permanent price promise; verify the live checkout price, country and edition.
The same page displayed Microsoft 365 pricing beginning at $9.99 per month in the observed U.S. presentation. Monthly, annual, promotional and account-specific pricing can change, so check the current store before purchasing. Microsoft’s Office Professional 2021 page remains available, but its indexed presentation does not establish a reliable current U.S. selling price.

How to evaluate an Office 2021 listing
- Historical list price: label the edition and date; an old launch price is not today’s price.
- Microsoft availability: confirm that Microsoft or an authorized retailer actually offers the exact edition and platform.
- Third-party offer: identify the seller, licensing channel, refund policy and whether redemption through your Microsoft account is guaranteed.
A very low “lifetime Office 2021” or “Professional Plus” key may be volume-license inventory, region-restricted, previously redeemed, organization-managed or improperly resold. “Lifetime” generally refers only to use of that particular version under its license terms. It does not mean unlimited computers, free major-version upgrades, permanent compatibility with every future operating system, or included cloud storage.
Main Office 2021 features
Word
The release includes desktop document creation and formatting, templates, Track Changes, comments, mail merge, PDF opening and export, and accessibility tools available in the 2021 build. Offline editing is possible after activation, but Microsoft 365 receives later feature additions that do not automatically arrive in Office 2021.
Excel
Excel 2021 brought dynamic array formulas, XLOOKUP, LET and XMATCH, along with modern chart and data-analysis improvements compared with older perpetual releases. It should not be treated as containing every current Microsoft 365 function.

Cloud collaboration and AI capabilities depend on the connected services and plan, not merely on owning the desktop application.
Outlook
Outlook is included in Home & Business 2021 and Professional 2021, but not Home & Student 2021. It is a classic desktop mail and calendar client; purchasing Office 2021 does not provide a Microsoft-hosted mailbox.
Access, Publisher and OneNote
Access and Publisher are included in Professional 2021 for Windows. They are not part of the standard Home & Student or Home & Business Mac packages. OneNote is included in the listed consumer suites.

Office 2021 versus Microsoft 365
| Issue | Office 2021 | Microsoft 365 |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | One-time purchase | Recurring subscription |
| Major upgrades | Buy a later version separately | Included while subscribed |
| Feature updates | Comparatively fixed release | Continuous updates |
| Devices | Generally one consumer PC or Mac | Multiple devices, subject to plan terms |
| Cloud storage | Not included as a product benefit | OneDrive storage included with consumer plans |
| Collaboration and current AI | Limited connected scenarios; not the full Microsoft 365 feature set | Stronger cloud integration and eligible current features |
| Best fit | One computer, stable desktop apps, no subscription | Multiple devices, families, storage and current features |
Choose Office 2021 when a one-time license and mostly offline work matter more than new features, cloud storage or several devices. Choose Microsoft 365 when you need synchronization, family sharing, current releases, collaboration or subscription-connected capabilities. Microsoft’s comparison chart is available as a PDF.
Office 2021 versus Office 2024
For a new one-time purchase, Office 2024 is usually the more defensible comparison. Office 2021 may make sense if a verifiable seller discounts it substantially, you specifically need its Windows Professional applications, or you already own it. Paying near the price of Office Home 2024 for an older release gives you less remaining useful life. Perpetual editions do not include an upgrade to the next major release, so an Office 2021 owner generally must buy Office 2024 separately.
Use this rule of thumb
- Already own Office 2021: keep using it if it meets your needs and remains compatible.
- Buying new from Microsoft: compare the live Office Home 2024 price first.
- Need Access or Publisher: consider Professional 2021 only on Windows and only with verifiable licensing.
- Need multiple devices or current features: compare Microsoft 365 Personal or Family.
System requirements and compatibility
Windows
- Windows 11 in Microsoft’s current consumer requirements listing
- 1.1 GHz or faster, two-core processor
- 4 GB RAM and 4 GB available storage
- 1280 × 768 display or higher
- DirectX 9 or later graphics support where applicable
- Internet for redemption, activation and periodic license checks
Mac
- Intel or Apple silicon processor
- One of the three most recent supported macOS versions under Microsoft’s rolling policy
- 4 GB RAM and 10 GB available storage
- 1280 × 800 display or higher
- Internet for redemption, activation and periodic checks
Microsoft’s requirements can change with operating-system releases; check the current system-requirements page. Windows and Mac editions are not interchangeable, and a Mac-compatible suite does not include Windows-only Access or Publisher.

Best Value
- Alternative office suite: Word processor TextMaker, Spreadsheet program PlanMaker, Presentation software Presentations, Automation tool BasicMaker
- Licensed for 5 users / household or 1 user / organization, perpetual lifetime license for Windows, Mac and Linux
- User interface with modern ribbons or classical menus
- Compatible with all modern Microsoft Office documents including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX
- The complete office suite can be installed on a USB flash and used without installation
Activation, installation and common problems
- Buy a legitimate license for the correct edition and platform.
- Sign in to, or create, a personal Microsoft account.
- Redeem the key through Microsoft’s official redemption flow and associate it with that account.
- Download the installer from Microsoft and install the permitted applications.
- Open an Office application and complete activation.
- Reconnect periodically so Microsoft can keep the license activated.
Internet access is required for redemption, activation and periodic checks even though Office 2021 is not a subscription. A key that is already used, belongs to another edition, or was redeemed to an employer-controlled account can fail. Keep the receipt and contact the seller promptly if redemption fails. Installation on a second computer is not automatically allowed; Microsoft’s installation guidance describes the consumer one-computer limitation and license-specific exceptions.
Support lifecycle and longevity
Retail Office 2021 editions are listed under Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle information, while Office LTSC 2021 is a separate commercial fixed-feature product with different licensing and lifecycle rules. Do not substitute LTSC dates for retail Office 2021. Microsoft’s current lifecycle entry is Office 2021 lifecycle; check it for the exact end-of-support date when making a long-term purchase decision.
Is Office 2021 worth buying in 2026?
Usually only in a narrow case. It is sensible when you already own a legitimate copy, need a one-time license for one computer, and find a deeply discounted, verifiable offer. It is difficult to justify when the price approaches Office Home 2024, when the seller cannot prove authorization, or when you need cloud storage, several devices, family sharing or continually updated features. For those needs, Microsoft 365 is generally the better fit.
