Yes, by two prominent measures—but neither proves that most US smartphone owners have an iPhone. StatCounter measured iOS at 58.35% of US mobile operating-system web usage in June 2026, while Counterpoint estimated Apple had 58% of US smartphone shipments in Q1 2026. Those figures measure different things: web activity and phones shipped, not a census of active phones.
What “market leader” means depends on the measurement
There is no single market-share figure that answers every version of this question. A chart may count web activity, newly shipped phones, active devices, manufacturers, or revenue. Each describes a different slice of the US market.

- Mobile operating-system usage: StatCounter estimates the share of mobile web activity attributed to each operating system across its website network. It is not the share of Americans who own a phone.
- Shipments: Counterpoint estimates manufacturers’ shares of smartphones shipped into the US during a quarter. A shipment is not necessarily a phone already sold to a consumer or still in use.
- Installed base: This is the share of phones currently being used. The usage and shipment figures below do not directly count that population.
- Vendor share: Apple is one manufacturer; Android is an operating system used by Samsung, Motorola, Google and other manufacturers. Comparing Apple with all Android phones is a platform comparison, not a company-versus-company comparison.
- Revenue or premium-phone share: These are distinct measures. The figures cited here do not establish Apple’s US revenue share or prove that it leads every price segment.
The latest figures answer different questions
| Measure and period | Reported share | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| US mobile OS usage, June 2026 | iOS 58.35%; Android 41.62% | Mobile web usage share, not ownership. StatCounter |
| US smartphone shipments, Q1 2026 | Apple 58%; Samsung 26%; Motorola 10%; Google 3%; others 3% | Estimated shares of phones shipped during the quarter. Counterpoint Research |
| US mobile-and-tablet OS usage, July 2026 | iOS 59.58%; Android 40.39% | Combined mobile and tablet usage, so it is not a smartphone-only figure. StatCounter |
The first row supports saying that iOS led measured US mobile web usage in June 2026. The second supports saying Apple led US smartphone shipments in Q1 2026. The third illustrates why a chart’s device scope matters: adding tablets changes the population being measured.
Why two data sources can disagree
Web activity is not a head count
StatCounter’s operating-system figures are based on web traffic observed across its network of sites. They are useful for comparing the operating systems behind measured mobile browsing, but browsing frequency, app use, default browsers and device mix can influence the result. A person who browses more often may contribute more activity than a person who rarely uses a browser. The percentage therefore should not be restated as the percentage of US residents or phone owners with iPhones.

Quarterly shipments are a flow, not the installed base
Counterpoint’s Q1 2026 shares describe shipments during that quarter. Phones may remain in inventory, be sold later, be returned, or replace an older phone used by the same person. Shipments can also shift with launch calendars, carrier promotions, inventory decisions and supply constraints.
Counterpoint reported that overall US smartphone shipments fell 3% year over year in Q1 2026 and attributed market conditions in part to a prior-year shipment surge ahead of expected tariffs, memory-supply constraints and the timing of Samsung’s Galaxy S26 launch. Those factors make a quarterly result informative about that period, not a guaranteed forecast of the next one. Counterpoint’s quarterly US data and commentary provide that context.

Apple leads as a manufacturer; Android remains a major platform
In Q1 2026, Apple’s 58% shipment share was larger than any individual manufacturer’s share. Samsung was the largest individual Android vendor at 26%, followed by Motorola at 10% and Google at 3%, according to Counterpoint’s US shipment estimates. Added together, those Android manufacturers represented substantially more shipment volume than any one Android brand.
That distinction explains how Apple can lead the vendor ranking while Android remains a powerful collective competitor. Android’s variety is not simply a weakness: it gives buyers more manufacturers, price points and form factors, including options for people who prioritize customization or lower upfront cost. Conversely, Apple’s unified control of iPhone hardware and iOS can make its product and software experience more consistent across its lineup.

Worldwide charts can also show Android ahead without contradicting US figures. A global total combines countries with different income levels, prices, carrier structures and brand preferences; it cannot be substituted for a US-only comparison.
What the evidence says about a lasting US advantage
The usage and shipment measures both favor Apple in the periods cited, but they do not prove that its lead will persist unchanged. Counterpoint’s Q1 2026 shipment share for Apple was one percentage point higher than a year earlier, even as total US shipments declined. Separately, MacRumors reported Counterpoint estimates that Apple’s US iPhone sales rose 1.3% year over year in Q1 2026 while Android device sales fell 14.4% in the same comparison. These are quarter-specific estimates, not a long-term guarantee. MacRumors’ report on Counterpoint’s Q1 results.

Customer retention is another relevant signal, but it measures buyers rather than the market as a whole. AppleInsider reported that CIRP found 87% of surveyed US iPhone buyers in the March 2026 quarter had previously owned an iPhone. That suggests strong repeat purchasing among that group; it does not mean that 87% of all US smartphone users choose Apple. AppleInsider’s report on the CIRP estimate.

These are plausible explanations, not quantified proof of what causes the market-share result. Apple promotes features such as Android-to-iPhone transfer through Move to iOS and integration with its devices on its iPhone page; those are the company’s product claims, not independent measurements of market advantage.

The US market also has a substantial premium-phone segment, where Apple is especially competitive. Carrier installments, trade-in offers and bill credits can reduce the amount due upfront, but they do not necessarily reduce the total cost by the advertised headline amount. Apple’s US page currently advertises carrier credits up to $800–$1,100, subject to carrier, eligibility, device and offer terms. Before comparing an offer, check the qualifying plan, required trade-in and device condition, how long credits take to arrive, and whether leaving the carrier early forfeits remaining credits. Apple’s current iPhone offers and terms.
A shift in pricing, product launches, supply, carrier promotions, Android hardware or consumer preferences could narrow the gap. Quarterly movement alone cannot establish which way the market will go over several years.

A larger market share does not make one platform the right choice for every buyer. Compare the phone and the cost of owning it over the period you expect to keep it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn iPhone may fit better if you value
- Integration with an Apple Watch, Mac, iPad or AirPods you already own.
- Familiarity with iMessage, FaceTime, AirDrop and iOS.
- A relatively consistent hardware-and-software experience across Apple’s phones.
- Apple’s trade-in and purchase options, after checking their conditions and total cost.
An Android phone may fit better if you value
- A wider range of prices, manufacturers and device designs.
- More system customization or a Google-centered experience.
- Specific hardware choices, such as a foldable design or features offered by an individual manufacturer.
- A lower upfront cost or a broader selection in budget and prepaid categories.
Compare the full cost, not just the monthly offer
For either platform, compare the full retail price, required service plan, financing term, trade-in value, bill-credit schedule, storage, warranty and repair costs, expected resale value, accessories you already own, and the cost or inconvenience of switching ecosystems. “Free” or low-monthly-cost offers can depend on eligibility and credits spread over time; read the carrier’s terms before treating the advertised amount as your actual price.
So, is iOS really the US leader?
Yes, under the two current measures cited here: iOS led StatCounter’s US mobile web-usage share in June 2026, and Apple led Counterpoint’s US smartphone shipment estimates in Q1 2026. The defensible claim is that iOS led measured mobile usage and Apple led recent smartphone shipments—not that Apple owns a specified share of all phones currently in use. Android remains a large collective platform, and the best purchase depends on a buyer’s budget, devices, priorities and the actual terms of available offers.
