Short answer: AT&T did report a maximum promotional value of $1,000.08 on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max in August 2024. The money was delivered as 36 monthly bill credits after an eligible trade-in and qualifying unlimited plan—not as $1,000 taken off at checkout. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus were reported at up to $700 in credits. Because that report is dated and the available evidence does not prove the same terms are active in 2026, treat the headline as a historical deal unless a live AT&T checkout page confirms current eligibility and amounts.
What the advertised iPhone 15 deal included
The August 31, 2024 report described an AT&T promotion whose maximum credit depended on the model, trade-in and plan. The reported terms were:

How $1,000.08 was calculated
For the reported iPhone 15 Pro Max example, the regular installment was approximately $33.34 per month. The maximum promotional installment was approximately $5.56. The difference is about $27.78 each month:
#1 Best Overall
- 6.1inch Super Retina XDR display. Aluminum with color-infused glass back. Ring/Silent switch
- Dynamic Island. A magical way to interact with iPhone. A16 Bionic chip with 5-core GPU
- Advanced dual-camera system. 48MP Main | Ultra Wide. Super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). Next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. 4X optical zoom range
- Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
- Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
$27.78 × 36 months = $1,000.08
The standard iPhone 15 example used approximately $23.06 per month before credits and $3.62 after credits. That is about $19.44 in monthly credits, or roughly $699.84 over 36 months, rounded in the article to $700. Taxes, fees, storage, trade-in tier and current carrier pricing can change the actual bill.
Why “free” does not mean free at checkout
- Free after credits: A device installment can be offset over time if every promotion condition remains satisfied.
- Not an instant discount: The full credit is not normally deducted when you order.
- Service is separate: You still pay the qualifying wireless plan, taxes and any activation or upgrade charges.
- Leaving can be expensive: A carrier may stop future credits and require the remaining device balance if you cancel, change eligibility or otherwise break the terms.
- Unlocked is not automatic: Financing through AT&T does not by itself promise immediate use on another network.
Who could qualify—and what the 2024 report does not establish
The reported maximum required an eligible trade-in and qualifying unlimited plan. It cited a minimum trade-in value of $290 for that promotion. That threshold belongs to the 2024 offer and should not be assumed for a current AT&T deal.
Before accepting any live offer, confirm each item below in the written terms or checkout summary:
- Eligible trade-in models, storage capacities and minimum condition
- Whether the device must be paid off before trade-in
- New-line, number-porting, existing-customer upgrade or add-a-line eligibility
- Exact qualifying unlimited plan names
- Whether purchases through authorized retailers qualify
- Whether the trade-in value is paid immediately, credited separately or included in the promotional credits
- Taxes charged on the full retail price and any activation or upgrade fee
- When credits begin and how a delayed or rejected trade-in affects them
“Up to” means the maximum normally requires the highest-value eligible phone in acceptable condition. A cracked or damaged device can receive substantially less.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
The 36-month commitment is the real price of the promotion
Carrier credits are conditional. Promotions commonly require the qualifying line and plan to remain active for the full 36 months; the exact cancellation, payoff and upgrade rules vary by offer. Before switching or downgrading, ask AT&T what happens to both the unpaid device balance and future credits.
Common early-exit consequences
- The remaining device balance may become due.
- Future promotional credits may be forfeited.
- An associated gift card or device incentive may be lost or subject to repayment terms.
- An early upgrade may require paying off the phone or surrendering credits.
Do not rely on the first bill as proof of the final price. Carriers may initially charge the standard installment while validating the trade-in, then add credits on a later bill.
Calculate the deal using total cost, not the phone installment
Use this comparison:
Promotional phone payments + incremental wireless-plan cost + taxes and fees − the trade-in’s realistic resale value − the value of included extras.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn existing AT&T customer already paying a qualifying plan may have little incremental service cost. Someone switching from a cheaper MVNO could spend far more on service during 36 months than the phone credit saves.

Historical iPhone 15 prices for context
The U.S. launch prices were $799 for iPhone 15, $899 for iPhone 15 Plus, $999 for iPhone 15 Pro and $1,199 for iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Pro Max began at 256GB; the other listed base configurations began at 128GB. These are historical launch prices, not a statement of 2026 retail pricing. See PhoneArena’s launch-price reference.
AT&T versus Apple Trade In
Apple applies an estimated trade-in credit toward an Apple purchase instead of tying the discount to a 36-month carrier subsidy. Apple says the final amount depends on model and condition and can be revised after inspection. For online trade-ins, the device generally must arrive within 14 days of receiving the replacement; Apple describes a typical two-to-three-week process. Details are at Apple Trade In.
| Route | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T bill credits | An existing customer who already wants the qualifying plan and expects to stay 36 months | Credits can stop after a plan change, cancellation or early payoff; service cost is part of the calculation |
| Apple Trade In | A shopper who wants a device-focused purchase and carrier flexibility | Apple’s estimated trade-in credit may be lower than a carrier’s promotional maximum |
| Unlocked or refurbished phone | Someone prioritizing low total cost and freedom to choose a carrier | No large carrier subsidy; condition, warranty and inventory vary |
Apple’s trade-in value can be revised if the phone arrives in a different condition than described. Check for cracked glass, failed cameras or buttons, water damage, an incorrect model, disabled Find My iPhone and Activation Lock before shipping. Keep proof of shipment and do not send a device until the replacement and return rules are clear.

How Verizon fits into the comparison
Verizon’s iPhone 15 upgrade page remains available and displays language about trading in any phone, in any condition. The available page evidence does not establish the exact current discount, plan requirement, credit duration or eligibility as of 2026, so do not compare a specific Verizon dollar amount until the live checkout shows it. Start at Verizon’s iPhone upgrade page.

Trade-in and plan-change failure points
Condition mismatch
A carrier or Apple can reassess a device that differs from the submitted description. Photograph the phone, record its serial number, remove accounts, disable Find My iPhone and follow the stated shipping deadline.
Existing installment balance
Trading in a financed phone does not necessarily erase its old balance. Check the old account and payoff amount before accepting a new promotion.
Storage upgrades
A $1,000 credit against a 128GB iPhone 15 Pro does not make a 512GB or 1TB model free. You remain responsible for the storage-price difference.

Locking and portability
Confirm the carrier’s current unlock policy, payoff requirements and eSIM restrictions. The ability to use an eSIM elsewhere is not the same as being unlocked while payments remain.
Which option makes sense for different shoppers?
Existing AT&T customer
The carrier deal can be attractive if your current plan already qualifies, your trade-in meets the top tier and you expect to stay for all 36 months.
Person switching carriers
Compare the extra service cost and any port-in requirement against the credit. A smaller phone discount with a cheaper plan can produce a lower 36-month total.
Flexibility-first buyer
Apple Trade In or an unlocked purchase avoids a carrier bill-credit lock-in and is usually easier to move between networks.
Maximum headline savings seeker
The reported $1,000 maximum was aimed at the Pro and Pro Max tiers, but only a qualifying trade-in and plan produced that figure. Verify the live offer before valuing it.
Lowest-cost buyer
Compare device-only, refurbished and direct-sale options. The lowest monthly phone payment is not necessarily the lowest ownership cost.
Checklist before you submit an order
- Open the current carrier offer and save the full terms.
- Confirm model, storage, trade-in condition and minimum value.
- Check whether you qualify as a new line, port-in, add-a-line or upgrade.
- Calculate the plan’s 36-month cost versus your current service.
- Ask when credits start and what happens if the trade-in is rejected.
- Confirm taxes, activation fees, payoff rules, upgrade limits and unlock policy.
- Record the device’s condition, serial number and shipping tracking.
- Do not cancel or downgrade the qualifying line until credits have ended or the terms explicitly allow it.
Verdict
The “up to $1,000 off” claim was a genuine maximum promotional value in AT&T’s reported August 2024 iPhone 15 offer, primarily for the Pro and Pro Max. It was not an instant discount, a free wireless plan or a promise that every buyer qualified. In 2026, treat it as historical until a live AT&T offer confirms the same amount and conditions. Choose it only when the required plan, trade-in and 36-month commitment produce a lower total cost than Apple Trade In, Verizon or an unlocked alternative.
