What “back-glass repair” actually means
Glass-only replacement
A technician removes shattered rear glass and bonds new glass while retaining the original frame and internal assembly. It is usually the least expensive professional option, but it requires specialized heat, laser or separation equipment. Adhesive quality, alignment and technician skill affect the result. A third-party repair should not be assumed to restore factory water resistance.

Rear-housing or enclosure replacement
The shop transfers components into a replacement housing, or replaces a larger rear assembly. This costs more and is commonly recommended when the frame or mounting structure is bent, separation is unsafe, or the model is difficult to service as glass-only. Ask which procedure your quote uses; “back-glass repair” can describe either one.

Whole-device replacement
Apple, an insurer or a service provider may replace the phone instead of repairing the panel. Ask whether you will receive your repaired original device, a replacement unit or a refurbished service device.
How AppleCare+ changes the calculation
Apple’s current fee schedule lists a $29 service fee for eligible iPhone screen or back-glass damage and $99 for other accidental damage. The fee applies per covered incident; it is not the total cost of owning AppleCare+. Coverage must already be active and the damage must fit the plan’s classification. Buying coverage after an accident does not turn existing damage into a covered claim.

If both the display and rear glass are broken, or the frame, camera or internals are damaged, ask Apple for a written classification and quote. The final service decision follows inspection and plan terms. The standard one-year limited warranty generally does not cover accidental damage.

Apple’s online estimator is model-specific rather than a permanent universal price table. Apple also says Authorized Service Providers may set their own out-of-warranty service fees. Published provider pages therefore demonstrate variation, not an official nationwide schedule.

Confirm whether the provider is doing glass-only work or replacing a housing, what parts are used, the warranty length and whether the repair affects future Apple service or AppleCare eligibility. Apple states that damage caused by a non-authorized repair provider is not covered by Apple’s Limited Warranty or AppleCare plan; that does not automatically mean every unrelated warranty right disappears.
Independent shops and uBreakiFix
A published U.S. independent-shop guide gives approximate examples of $119–$179 for iPhone 14 models and $169–$299 for iPhone 17 models. Those figures vary with size, Pro status, color, labor, part quality, laser versus manual separation and frame condition. A low quote may mean aftermarket glass, glass-only work, a shorter warranty or no promise about sealing.

It identifies itself as an Apple Independent Repair Provider. The referenced page does not publish one universal national price, so the store must quote your exact model and damage.

Which models and damage types cost more?
Model construction matters more than the phrase “iPhone back glass.” Standard, Plus, Pro, Pro Max and Air versions can use different internal layouts and service procedures. iFixit documents rear-glass procedures for iPhone 14, 15, 16 and 17 families, but a guide does not guarantee that Apple or a local shop offers the same service. Older phones may be quoted for a larger rear-system or housing replacement rather than simple glass separation. Pro and Pro Max models can cost more because of construction, camera-area components and parts availability. A bent frame, damaged camera or battery, cracked front glass or liquid exposure can move the job into a higher accidental-damage category.
Is it safe to keep using a cracked back?
The phone may work when only the rear panel is cracked, but exposed openings allow dust and moisture inside and can produce sharp fragments. A case or temporary protective film reduces handling risk; it is not a repair. Keep the phone dry and do not press loose shards back into place.
Stop using it and seek professional service promptly if it becomes hot, swells, smells unusual, bends, loses charging or shows battery or camera problems. After any repair, sealing may be improved, but factory water-resistance performance is not guaranteed.
Before you authorize service
- Back up the iPhone to iCloud or a computer.
- Photograph the display, cameras, frame, buttons, charging port and existing damage.
- Check AppleCare coverage in Settings or through Apple Support.
- Follow the provider’s instructions about disabling Find My; do not disable it merely because an advertisement says to.
- Request a written diagnosis and all-in quote before work begins.
- Ask whether the job is glass-only, rear-housing or whole-device replacement.
- Ask whether parts are genuine Apple, aftermarket or described only as “OEM-quality.” Those labels are not interchangeable without documentation.
- Confirm testing of cameras, flash, microphones, buttons, wireless charging and MagSafe where applicable.
- Get the warranty period, exclusions and water-resistance disclaimer in writing.
Repair or replace the phone?
Compare the complete repair quote with the cost of a like-for-like reputable refurbished replacement, not the phone’s original retail price. Repair is generally sensible when the phone is recent, otherwise healthy and the quote is materially below an equivalent replacement. Replacement is often better when the frame or internals are damaged, the battery is swollen or badly degraded, the phone is several generations old, or the repair approaches its current used value.
AppleCare+ customers with a covered incident usually face a predictable $29 service fee. Uninsured owners should obtain at least one Apple or authorized quote and one reputable independent quote, making sure both describe the same repair scope. A $250 glass-only repair and a $250 housing replacement are not equivalent outcomes.
