Facebook Marketplace is usually the best first alternative to OfferUp for local sales. Craigslist is a strong low-cost choice for straightforward classifieds, while eBay is better when an item needs nationwide buyers. Mercari simplifies shipping for ordinary goods; Poshmark and Depop are better for fashion. The right choice depends on pickup versus shipping, item category, local demand, fees, and how much transaction management you want.
The fee examples and policies below are for U.S. sellers and can change. Check the linked official page before listing.

Quick comparison
| Platform | Best for | Transaction model | Fee signal | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook Marketplace | Most ordinary local sales | Primarily local pickup; shipping availability varies | No single universal fee for local deals; review checkout terms for shipped orders | Scams, lowball offers, no-shows and inconsistent listing enforcement |
| Craigslist | Furniture, appliances, vehicles and cash sales | Local classified listings | Most ordinary posts are free; some categories are paid | Less integrated payment, reputation and dispute support |
| eBay | Collectibles, electronics and rare items | Nationwide shipping | Up to 250 zero-insertion listings monthly for many sellers; final-value fees vary by category | Complex fees, shipping, returns and performance rules |
| Mercari | Small-to-medium shippable goods | Shipping marketplace | 10% seller fee on completed item price and buyer-paid shipping; buyer protection fee may also apply | Buyer fee and shipping can reduce conversion |
| Poshmark | Clothing, shoes and accessories | Fashion-focused shipping | $2.95 on U.S. sales of $15 or less; 20% over $15 | High fee and poor fit for general merchandise |
| Depop | Vintage, streetwear and trend-led fashion | Shipping marketplace | Current U.S. policy lists 10% selling plus 3.3% + $0.45 payment processing for applicable sales | Rules and audience change; visual presentation matters |
| Nextdoor | Neighborhood sales and free items | Hyperlocal pickup | Varies by transaction; many local posts have no marketplace commission | Smaller audience, especially outside dense areas |
| 5miles | Local miscellaneous goods where active | Mobile-first local marketplace | Current fees and liquidity vary by location | Availability and buyer activity may be uneven |

What makes an OfferUp alternative worthwhile?
- Liquidity: enough nearby or national buyers for your item.
- Category fit: furniture, vehicles, electronics, fashion and collectibles behave differently.
- Total cost: seller and buyer fees, shipping, packaging, promotions and possible returns.
- Transaction tools: payment processing, labels, tracking, dispute handling and payout timing.
- Safety: ratings and policies help, but they do not replace safe meetings or careful payment verification.
- Geography: a service can be active in one metro and nearly empty in another.
1. Facebook Marketplace

Start here for sofas, tables, appliances, electronics, household goods and other ordinary items when local exposure matters most.

Advantages over OfferUp
Facebook’s existing social network often gives Marketplace a broad pool of nearby buyers. It is familiar, photo-first and convenient for arranging pickup. You can also cross-list in relevant local groups where permitted.
Costs, protection and limitations
Local deals do not have one universal commission. Shipped transactions, checkout availability and protection depend on the current listing flow. Keep payment and messages in Facebook when protection depends on them. Facebook does not allow services as ordinary Marketplace listings under its prohibited-listings policy.
Skip it when
You need a searchable national market for a rare item, or you cannot manage frequent no-shows and scam attempts.
2. Craigslist
Best for
Use Craigslist for bulky furniture, appliances, vehicles, services and simple local cash sales, especially if you do not want a social-media account.
Costs and trade-offs
Most ordinary U.S. postings are free, but category and location exceptions apply. Current examples include $5 postings for dealer vehicles, owner-listed cars, trucks, RVs and motorcycles, and services. See the fee FAQ and posting-fee schedule.
Craigslist is a classified board, not a managed checkout system. You normally arrange communication, payment, inspection and pickup yourself, so fake checks, overpayment and shipping scams require extra caution.

3. eBay
Best for
Choose eBay when model numbers, condition, rarity or completed-sale history create demand beyond your city: collectibles, cards, vintage toys, electronics and parts are typical examples.

Fees and shipping
Many sellers receive up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month; insertion fees can apply afterward. Final-value fees vary by category. eBay’s standard-fee page lists 13.6% for many categories up to $7,500, plus a per-order fee, while other categories differ. Check current selling fees before pricing.
Risks
Accurate item specifics, protective packaging and clear defect descriptions matter. Returns and “item not as described” disputes can reduce proceeds. eBay says sellers missing performance expectations for four or more consecutive months may face an additional final-value fee beginning July 1, 2026.
4. Mercari
Best for
Mercari is a practical middle ground for casual sellers shipping small-to-medium goods who want less setup than eBay.
Fees and protection
Mercari’s official fee page states a 10% seller fee on the completed item price and buyer-paid shipping. Buyers may also pay a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee under the cited structure. Qualifying Mercari shipping can include protection up to $200 when the required process is followed; details are in the seller-protection policy.

5. Poshmark
Best for
Use Poshmark for everyday clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories. Its fashion audience and prepaid-label workflow are more useful than a general local app for these items.
Fees and fit
Poshmark’s U.S. terms state a $2.95 seller fee for sales of $15 or less and a 20% seller fee for sales over $15. The cited policy says the Buyer Protection Fee was removed. The 20% rate makes low-margin items unattractive, and Poshmark is not designed for furniture or electronics. Review the current terms.
6. Depop
Best for
Depop suits vintage, streetwear and visually distinctive fashion where styling and discovery are part of the sale.

The current U.S. help page lists a 10% Depop selling fee plus 3.3% and $0.45 payment processing for applicable U.S. sales. It also identifies a March 23, 2026 change for new listings, so verify the live U.S. fee page before publishing a listing. Older articles claiming no seller fee may be out of date.
7. Nextdoor
Best for
Nextdoor works well for free items, baby gear, household goods and bulky products when buyers being close by is more important than maximum reach.
Limitations
Its audience may be small in rural or low-density areas. Neighborhood membership can reduce friction but is not proof of identity or honesty; use the same payment and meetup precautions as elsewhere.

8. 5miles
Best for
5miles is worth checking for local miscellaneous goods where it has an active user base.
Important qualification
Availability, response rates and liquidity can vary substantially by city. Treat it as an additional listing channel, not a universally strong OfferUp replacement, unless you confirm recent local activity.
Best platform by item and situation
| Situation | First choice | Backup |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa, table, mattress or appliance | Facebook Marketplace or Nextdoor | Craigslist |
| Cheap household goods | Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or Nextdoor | 5miles |
| Smartphone, console or computer part | eBay or Mercari | Facebook Marketplace for pickup |
| Collectible, rare book, card or vintage toy | eBay | Mercari |
| Everyday clothing | Poshmark | Mercari |
| Vintage or streetwear clothing | Depop | Poshmark or eBay |
| Car, truck, motorcycle or RV | Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace | eBay Motors where appropriate |
| Free items | Nextdoor or Facebook Marketplace | Craigslist |
| No Facebook account | Craigslist | Nextdoor or eBay, depending on item |
| High-value item needing structured protection | eBay or an established shipped marketplace | Public-location local sale |
Fees: compare net proceeds, not percentages
The useful calculation is expected sale price − seller fee − payment fee − shipping and packaging − likely discounts or promotion costs. Buyer fees can also lower the price buyers are willing to accept.
Illustrative examples
- Local cash sale: a $300 table may have no platform commission, but your net is lower if you spend on delivery, fuel or a paid category listing.
- eBay shipment: a $300 item subject to a 13.6% final-value rate would incur $40.80 before any per-order fee, shipping, packaging, returns or other category rules.
- Mercari shipment: a $100 completed item with $15 buyer-paid shipping would have a 10% seller fee on $115, or $11.50, before packaging and any other costs.
- Poshmark sale: a $50 fashion sale would incur the cited 20% fee, leaving $40 before your cost basis.
These examples illustrate the math, not guaranteed prices or universal rates.
How to choose in two minutes
- Need pickup? Try Facebook Marketplace first, then Nextdoor and Craigslist.
- Need nationwide demand? Use eBay for searchable or rare goods; use Mercari for simpler shipping.
- Selling fashion? Choose Poshmark for everyday apparel or Depop for vintage and streetwear.
- Is it bulky? Prefer local platforms; shipping may erase the sale’s value.
- Want minimal platform control? Craigslist offers a simple listing model, with more responsibility for you.
- Unsure? Post on two relevant platforms for seven days and compare qualified inquiries, not just views.
Cross-listing without creating a mess
- Use one consistent photo set and an accurate condition description.
- Adjust price for each platform’s buyer fees and shipping cost.
- Say the item is cross-listed if that helps set expectations.
- Remove or mark every duplicate listing sold as soon as a firm commitment is accepted.
- Do not move payment off-platform when in-platform payment is required for protection.
Safety checklist
- Meet in a busy public place during daylight when possible; tell someone where you are.
- Avoid giving your home address and avoid home pickup for high-value goods.
- Reject overpayments, checks, gift cards and requests for verification codes.
- Keep messages and payment inside the platform when coverage depends on that workflow.
- Inspect electronics, serial numbers, locks and account status before completing a sale.
- For vehicles, verify the title, VIN, lien status and payment authenticity.
- For shipped orders, photograph the item, serial number, packaging and label; retain tracking and proof of shipment.
- Describe defects precisely and never switch to an outside payment method merely to avoid fees.
When OfferUp is still the better choice
OfferUp remains sensible if you want a dedicated used-goods marketplace, mobile-first listing, in-app messaging and local pickup without joining a social network. An alternative is better only when it gives your particular item more relevant buyers, better shipping tools or a cost and protection balance that suits the transaction.
