1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo set a stop-loss, open the stock’s order ticket, choose a stop or stop-limit order, enter the trigger price, review the order details, and confirm that the broker accepted it. A price alert is different: it sends a notification when a threshold is reached but does not, by itself, place a trade. Exact screens, supported orders, and trigger rules vary by app and brokerage.
How to set a stop-loss order in a trading app
For an owned stock position, a sell stop is generally placed below the current market price. For a short position, a buy stop is generally placed above it. These are general mechanics, not a recommendation for a particular price or strategy.

- Open the holding or trade ticket. Confirm the stock symbol, share quantity, and whether you are placing an order to sell shares you own or managing a short position.
- Choose the order type. Select a stop order or stop-limit order only if your brokerage offers it and you understand the difference. Do not assume that a similarly named option in every app behaves identically.
- Enter the trigger price. For a stop-limit order, enter the separate limit price as well. The stop price activates the order; it does not promise that your shares will sell at that price.
- Review the order conditions. Check quantity, order side, duration or time-in-force, eligible trading hours, trigger method, and the order summary. Brokers may have different policies and trigger conditions; ask yours how it handles stop orders, particularly in volatile markets.
- Submit and verify. Before confirming, check the side, quantity, type, stop price, any limit price, and duration. Then confirm that the order appears as open or accepted. If it is rejected or unavailable, do not assume the position is protected.
The exact menu labels and availability depend on the app and brokerage. Consult the brokerage’s current order ticket and official help pages for its instructions and rules.
Stop order vs. stop-limit order
A stop order and a stop-limit order both use a stop price as a trigger, but the order sent after that trigger differs. FINRA explains: “A stop order becomes a market order once the stop price is reached.” (FINRA, March 26, 2025.)
#1 Best Overall
| Order type | What happens at the trigger | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stop order | Becomes a market order. | It prioritizes submitting an order for execution, but the eventual sale price may differ significantly from the stop price, especially in a fast market. |
| Stop-limit order | Becomes a limit order at the specified limit price. | It sets a boundary on the acceptable sale price, but the order may not execute if the market moves beyond that price. |
Neither type guarantees a particular execution price or outcome. FINRA and the SEC explain the mechanics and broker-specific policies in their guidance: FINRA’s order types overview and the SEC’s stop, stop-limit, and trailing stop orders bulletin, updated August 18, 2026.
Trailing stops
A trailing stop is a separate order variant whose stop level follows the market by a specified dollar amount or percentage under the brokerage’s terms. Availability and operation vary by firm, so check the broker’s documentation before using one.

How to set a stock price alert
If your app offers price alerts, use its alert feature separately from the order ticket. An alert is intended to notify you when a chosen price condition is met; a stop order is an instruction that can lead to a trade after its trigger. An alert alone does not place a trade.
Alert setup is app-specific. Check the brokerage’s instructions for how to choose a threshold, whether alerts expire, which notification methods are available, and whether notifications must be enabled on your device. Do not assume an alert is connected to an order unless the app explicitly says so.

Choosing a stop level without false precision
There is no universally suitable stop price or percentage in the guidance cited here. The order mechanics explain how a trigger works, not which level is appropriate for your finances, time horizon, or risk tolerance. Decide on a level as part of your own plan, then confirm the order’s actual terms with your brokerage.
A stop can be triggered by volatility or a brief sharp move even if the stock later rebounds. If the order executes, the resulting trade cannot simply be undone. FINRA discusses these risks and the stop-limit trade-off in its guidance on stop orders during volatile markets. FINRA’s Rule 5350 also addresses stop-order definitions, firm acceptance, and disclosures about trigger events; firms are not all required to accept every order type.
