Former Ole Miss tight end Joel Rufus French was convicted by a federal jury in Florida for his role in a scheme that the U.S. Department of Justice said billed Medicare and the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) nearly $200 million. Later reporting says French received a 196-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay more than $110 million in restitution; those sentencing details have not been confirmed here against the court record.
Who is Joel Rufus French?
French, 47, of Amory, Mississippi, is a former Ole Miss football player. Forbes reported that he played tight end in the late 1990s, was a unanimous All-American, later signed with the Seattle Seahawks and spent time with the Green Bay Packers. He did not appear in an NFL regular-season game. His athletic career is background to the case, not an explanation for the conduct described by prosecutors.

How did the brace-billing scheme work?
According to the Justice Department’s account of court documents and trial evidence, the operation used patient information and sham medical orders to generate claims for orthotic braces that people did not want or need. Overseas call centers pressured elderly Americans to provide personal and insurance information and agree to receive braces. Some patients had Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. In some cases, recordings were altered to make it appear that Medicare patients had agreed to the braces when they had not.
French paid telemedicine companies for signed orders from doctors and nurse practitioners who, according to DOJ, had not examined and often had not spoken with the patients. He sold the orders to marketers and medical supply companies that submitted claims. DOJ also said French billed Medicare and CHAMPVA through eight durable medical equipment supply companies he owned and managed, while using false documents to conceal his connection to them.

Trial evidence included claims for braces for deceased beneficiaries and for amputees for limbs they did not have. DOJ also described about $225,000 in cash withdrawals during the conspiracy, including more than $10,000 transported to Orlando to pay accomplices who sold beneficiaries’ personal and insurance information.
What was French convicted of?
On February 3, 2026, a federal jury in the Middle District of Florida convicted French of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and conspiracy to offer, pay, solicit and receive kickbacks. The verdict followed a trial; these were conspiracy convictions, not simply allegations in a charging document.

DOJ described the alleged billing scale as nearly $200 million across Medicare and CHAMPVA. That figure refers to the scheme’s billing, not an amount established as French’s personal proceeds or the restitution ordered by the court.
What sentence did French receive?
A May 2026 report by Inquisitr says French was sentenced to 196 months in prison and ordered to pay $110,753,619 in restitution, with approximately $17 million forfeited. The Florida Bar’s February 5 digest summarized a report that French intended to appeal. The primary sentencing order and current appeal docket have not been verified here, so these later developments should be understood as reported outcomes rather than independently confirmed court-record details.

Why the case involved Medicare and CHAMPVA
Medicare is a federal health insurance program; CHAMPVA is the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs, which provides health coverage for eligible family members and survivors. The DOJ case said claims were submitted to both programs for braces generated through patient information and orders that did not reflect genuine medical need or consent. DOJ cited the case as part of the broader federal effort against health care fraud, reporting that its Health Care Fraud Strike Force had charged more than 6,200 defendants and identified more than $45 billion in collectively billed claims since March 2007. Those program-wide figures are not specific to French’s case.
What officials said
Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva said French “targeted seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia and billed Medicare for orthotic braces for deceased patients and amputees.” HHS Office of Inspector General Acting Deputy Inspector General for Investigations Scott J. Lampert said the scheme relied on sham operations, falsified doctors’ orders and the sale of patient information. VA Office of Inspector General Special Agent in Charge David Spilker described the verdict as accountability for targeting a program intended for veterans’ families and survivors.
