When fewer people are walking through the door, start by making it easy for nearby customers to find accurate information, see what you offer, and take a clear next step. Then choose a small number of channels you can keep current, and judge them by calls, bookings, orders, and sales—not clicks alone.
Make your online front door accurate and useful
Start with your Google Business Profile. Confirm that the business name, category, address or service area, hours, phone number, and website match how the business actually operates. Update holiday or other special hours when needed. Google says complete, accurate profile information can make a business more likely to appear in relevant local searches; local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence. Google does not let businesses request or pay for a better local ranking. Google’s local ranking guidance

Next, give searchers a reason to choose you and a practical way to act. Add recent photos or video that reflect what customers will find now, and respond helpfully to reviews. Make sure the profile and website show a working phone number, location-specific information, and a clear route to book, order, or visit. If you advertise a sale or giveaway on your profile, include its terms and qualifications and honor what you promise. Google Business Profile guidance
Eligible retailers in some countries or regions can explore displaying in-store products on their profiles so customers can see what may be available. Availability is conditional, and Google’s product policies exclude certain regulated categories. Check the current eligibility and policy requirements before relying on this feature. Choose channels that match your customers and capacity
You do not need to maintain every social platform. Pick a few places where current or prospective customers already look, and where you can keep information fresh. The right combination depends on whether customers are actively searching for a provider, already know your business, or rely on local recommendations.
| Channel | Best fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Business profile and local search | People actively looking for a nearby business or service | Accurate setup is foundational, but visibility depends partly on relevance, distance, and prominence. |
| Local social updates | Sharing timely news, useful information, events, or offers with people who follow or discover you | Requires ongoing owner time; choose a platform your customers use and that you can maintain. |
| Opt-in email or customer follow-up | Reconnecting with existing customers and pointing them to a useful update, current offer, or booking page | Contact customers only with appropriate permission, and keep messages relevant rather than sending them merely to stay visible. |
| Community directories, local media, and professional groups | Building local awareness or reaching a focused business-to-business audience | Check that listings are accurate and that the audience fits; niche or community directories can matter more than broad reach. |
| Referrals and nearby business partnerships | Borrowing trust and reaching customers through complementary local businesses | Results depend on genuine fit and follow-through, not just exchanging links or mentions. |
| Paid local advertising | Testing a defined offer or reaching people in a specific area, including customers actively seeking a provider | Costs and eligibility vary. Set a spending limit and measure meaningful actions before expanding. |
These organic options—useful local social content, directories, local media, professional groups, partnerships, referrals, and events—are durable small-business tactics also described in an SBA article by Anita Campbell. Its platform examples date to March 21, 2017, so focus on the underlying approach rather than assuming any named platform still works the same way. SBA: 5 Ways to Promote Your Small Business Online

Use existing customer relationships thoughtfully
Where appropriate, maintain an opt-in customer list. A thank-you or follow-up email can invite honest feedback, share a useful update, or direct a customer to a current offer or booking page. A newsletter can also point readers to helpful material on your own site. Ask for honest reviews without offering a reward or conditioning the request on a positive rating. Make paid promotion a controlled test
Paid promotion is optional; it is not a shortcut to a higher Google local ranking. Before spending, specify the audience, location, offer, and outcome you want. Google’s local-marketing guidance recommends location-based messaging, clear images or short video, and a specific offer where it makes sense. Local Services Ads may be relevant for eligible service businesses with local demand, but eligibility depends on service category and availability. Advertising costs vary by industry, competition, and geography. Google Ads local-marketing guidance Local Services Ads

- Pick one business goal. For example, qualified calls, bookings, online orders, coupon redemptions, or in-store sales.
- Set a test boundary. Choose a budget and period the business can afford, and avoid expanding spend until you can assess the result.
- Make the action trackable. Use a campaign link or offer code where practical, and make the landing page or call-to-action match the ad.
- Review the outcome. Compare the cost with qualified inquiries and sales, including sales that happen in person. Do not treat exposure or clicks as proof of a visit or purchase.
Google describes conversion actions, local actions, store-visit conversions, and store-sales measurement as possible measurement tools. Access to these features varies, so a small business may need simpler methods such as campaign links, codes, and asking customers how they heard about the business. Choose a measure before you post or spend. A rise in reach, profile views, or clicks may show attention, but it does not by itself establish that customers came in or bought. Pair online activity with business outcomes, and compare like with like over the same period.

- Track qualified calls, bookings, orders, coupon redemptions, or sales that you can reasonably connect to a campaign.
- Use distinct links or codes for different offers when practical, and ask customers how they found the business.
- Separate online-originated sales from face-to-face sales in your own business analysis, while recognizing that a customer may discover you online and complete the purchase in person.
- Compare the sales or inquiries with associated costs over the same timeframe. A campaign that creates attention but no worthwhile actions may need a different offer, audience, or channel.
The SBA recommends distinguishing online and face-to-face sales when analyzing a business. Google’s measurement options can help some advertisers assess offline outcomes, but not every business or campaign can use every feature. No general, reliable foot-traffic increase can be promised from a particular channel: the outcome depends on the business, audience, location, offer, and execution.
