What the 2020 ranking measures—and what it does not
Monochrome Watches’ 2021 account of the “Top 50 Swiss Watch Brands of 2020” draws on a Swiss watch-market analysis by Morgan Stanley Research and Oliver Müller of LuxeConsult. It presents estimated brand shares and sales, not a set of audited financial results. Le Temps likewise reports that the market is not especially transparent and that the analysis relies substantially on estimates—including turnover, exported units, average prices and sales channels—before smoothing the data to calculate market shares.

That distinction matters: an estimated market share is not the same thing as audited revenue, units sold, average price, or a parent company’s combined share. The figures reproduced in the cited coverage also do not provide a verifiable, complete set of all 50 ranked entries and values. A full ordered table cannot be stated from the available figures without guessing.

Le Temps, reporting on the Morgan Stanley/LuxeConsult analysis, gives a 26.8% estimate for Rolex and Tudor combined. That group figure should not be presented as Rolex’s standalone share.

Monochrome also says the Rolex Group (Rolex plus Tudor) surpassed Swatch Group’s cited 27% share. The sources’ reported figures use different descriptions and comparisons; they do not support treating the group estimate, Rolex’s individual share, and a company-group share as interchangeable measures.
What official Swiss export data says about 2020
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH reported that Swiss wristwatch export value in 2020 was CHF 16.1 billion, down 21.4%, while 13.8 million watches were exported, down 33.3%. These are industry export figures, not the denominator for the brand-share estimates and not estimates of final consumer retail spending. The Federation states: “All the values stated in the watch industry statistics and hence in this document are export prices and not the sale price to the final consumer (retail price).”

In its wider account, the Federation reported a 21.8% fall in total Swiss watch export value for 2020. Its January 28, 2021 release described lockdown-related production stoppages, weak travel retail and accelerated digitalisation. China was the only main market in that account to grow year over year, with Swiss watch exports there up 20.0% from 2019. Those market-wide export trends provide context for an unusually disruptive year; they do not establish any individual brand’s retail performance.

How to compare figures without mixing them up
- Market share: a proportion of a defined market, estimated in this ranking rather than disclosed as an audited brand result.
- Turnover: an estimated sales-value measure; it is not automatically equivalent to retail sales or export value.
- Units: a volume measure. The Federation’s 13.8 million figure counts Swiss watches exported, not a verified unit total for a named brand.
- Average price: a separate estimated measure whose basis can differ from consumer retail prices.
- Brand versus group: Rolex alone and Rolex plus Tudor are different entities for comparison purposes.
When reading a 2020 comparison, check the measure, whether it applies to a brand or group, and whether the value is an estimate, export price, wholesale figure or retail figure. The sources do not make those categories interchangeable.
