How to Prepare for a Tech Layoff: A Practical Checklist for Your Finances, Files, and Job Search

Prepare before your access is cut off: map household cash flow, save lawful personal employment and benefits records, identify health-coverage deadlines, document separation terms, and line up your unemployment and job-search channels. A layoff can turn routine decisions into deadline-driven ones, but a written checklist reduces the scramble. This guide is U.S.-focused; eligibility and timing vary by state, employer, contract, and benefit plan.

Start with a household cash-flow picture

Do this while you still have normal access to pay information and account statements. The goal is not to choose a universal emergency-fund target—the official guidance does not establish one—but to calculate what your household can cover if wages stop.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

List essential monthly outflows

  • Housing, utilities, food, transportation, debt minimums, insurance, health care, and dependent care.
  • Automatic payments, annual bills, subscriptions, and any expenses that would continue during a job search.
  • Potentially variable costs such as prescriptions, commuting, child care, or professional licensing.

List available resources

  • Liquid savings and money that can be accessed without selling long-term investments at an inconvenient time.
  • Other household income, including a partner’s earnings or documented benefits.
  • Any severance terms already provided in writing, noting whether payment is contingent on signing a release.
  • Debt balances, interest rates, minimum payments, and the dates payments are due.

Use the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s income, spending, cash-flow, and expense worksheets to put the figures in one place: CFPB Unexpected job loss. Model at least two versions: one using only cash and confirmed income, and another that includes unemployment only after checking your state’s rules. The CFPB describes unemployment as typically a weekly payment of a few hundred dollars, not a full wage replacement. Eligibility and the amount depend on state law and your facts, and unemployment compensation is taxable income.

Create a secure personal-records folder

The CFPB’s succinct instruction is “Gather your documents.” Make a personal folder—online or offline—that contains records you are entitled to retain and can use for benefits, taxes, and a future job search.

Records to save

  • Recent pay statements, compensation history, and your official role or position description.
  • Performance reviews, ratings, awards, and a private list of accomplishments you can accurately describe without revealing confidential information.
  • Benefits summaries, health-plan contacts, retirement account statements, the Summary Plan Description (SPD), vesting information, and plan contact details.
  • Your employment dates, manager’s name, and personal contact information for colleagues who have agreed to stay in touch.
  • Tax forms and other personal payroll records that you normally receive as an employee.

Keep company property out of the folder

Do not copy source code, customer data, credentials, internal strategy, confidential documents, trade secrets, or other employer property. A personal record of your responsibilities and results is different from taking the underlying company material. If you are unsure whether a file is yours to retain, ask Human Resources or qualified counsel before copying it. The CFPB discusses gathering information about position, responsibilities, pay, performance, and contacts; the Department of Labor (DOL) recommends obtaining retirement-plan documents. Neither is permission to remove confidential employer information. See CFPB guidance and DOL benefits guidance.

Protect access to personal accounts

  • Move personal files out of employer-managed storage only when they do not contain company information and your employer’s policy permits it.
  • Change passwords for personal email, banking, cloud storage, and professional accounts if they were ever used on a work device or shared with a work browser.
  • Confirm that personal recovery email addresses and phone numbers—not a work address—are attached to those accounts.
  • Keep an offline copy of essential contact numbers and benefit-plan information in case your company login stops working.

Prepare a job-search starting point

Update your work history while details are fresh

Draft a resume or work-history document that records your role scope, outcomes, tools, and skills that can be disclosed publicly. Quantify results only when you can support them, and remove customer or product details covered by confidentiality obligations. Create a short version for applications and a longer private record for interviews.

Reconnect with trusted contacts

Contact former colleagues, mentors, professional associations, and other people who have agreed to stay in touch. The CFPB notes that networks can lead to job opportunities. Ask for a conversation or an introduction rather than forwarding confidential company information. Keep a simple tracker with the person’s name, date contacted, follow-up date, and any promised introduction.

Find official workforce channels before you need them

Bookmark your state’s official unemployment-insurance portal and workforce agency. DOL says dislocated workers may have access to job-search and placement services; its employer guide explains that workforce resources can be available after a qualifying layoff: DOL WARN employer guide. Verify the web address independently rather than using a link in an unexpected message.

When a layoff is announced, get the facts in writing

Ask for a written separation packet and record the dates in a personal calendar. Request:

  • Your last day actively working and the formal separation date.
  • Final-pay timing, the severance amount, payment dates, and any conditions or release deadline.
  • How unused vacation or other leave will be treated under the employer’s policy and applicable state law.
  • Equity-plan details, including vesting, exercise windows, and the plan administrator’s contact information.
  • The date health, dental, vision, life, disability, and other benefits end.
  • Who handles each benefit, how to reach that person, and where notices will be sent after your work email closes.

Do not assume a universal severance entitlement. DOL explains that severance and termination rights can depend on contracts, collective-bargaining agreements, employer policies, and applicable law. Read a release or waiver carefully, note the deadline, and obtain qualified legal advice if the document affects rights you do not understand. DOL’s termination overview is at DOL Termination.

Check whether notice laws might apply

Federal WARN can require 60 calendar days’ written advance notice for covered plant closings and mass layoffs. The federal overview generally addresses employers with 100 or more employees and qualifying events, but detailed employee-count, hours-worked, site, and exception rules matter. Some states have their own notice laws. Use DOL Plant Closings and Layoffs to identify the questions; do not treat the overview as a determination that your individual layoff is covered.

File for unemployment through the correct state channel

Apply promptly through the official unemployment-insurance agency for the state where you worked. The correct state and filing method can be complicated for remote, multi-state, or recently transferred workers; use the state-by-state contacts linked from the CFPB Unexpected job loss page and confirm instructions with the agency.

  1. Gather your Social Security number or other required identifier, employer details, dates worked, pay information, and separation reason.
  2. File through the agency’s official website or phone number, not through a recruiter, paid helper, social-media message, or search advertisement.
  3. Save the confirmation number, filing date, and copies of submitted information.
  4. Complete weekly or biweekly certifications and job-search activities exactly as your state requires.
  5. Report severance, vacation pay, temporary work, or other income when the state asks for it; do not guess how a payment is classified.

Laid-off workers may generally qualify, but state law and the facts control. A resignation, misconduct finding, refusal of suitable work, or other circumstance can change eligibility. Benefits are taxable; see the IRS discussion at What if I lose my job?.

Compare health coverage before the deadlines

Health coverage is the most time-sensitive part of a layoff. Obtain the actual termination notice, election packet, premium quote, and effective dates. Then compare these routes rather than assuming one is always cheapest.

Option What it can preserve or provide Key timing or cost point Questions to verify
Spouse’s or another employer plan Coverage through an eligible household member’s job Special enrollment generally must be requested within 30 days after losing eligibility for former coverage. Enrollment deadline, effective date, premium, deductible, network, and whether dependents can join.
COBRA continuation Temporary continuation of the existing employer group plan and network Generally applies to covered employers with 20 or more employees in the prior year; election is generally due within 60 days of the later of notice or coverage loss. The premium can be up to 102% of plan cost, and continuation is generally up to 18 months, with extensions in some circumstances. Full monthly premium, election and payment deadlines, coverage end date, and whether current doctors and prescriptions remain in network.
Marketplace plan Individual coverage, potentially with income-based savings Loss of job-based coverage can create a special enrollment opportunity. Marketplace savings use estimated household income for the entire calendar year. Net premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, provider and drug networks, effective date, and how a later income change affects savings.
Medicaid or CHIP Public coverage for eligible adults or children Eligibility depends on household circumstances and state rules; a lower household income after a layoff can change eligibility. State application channel, eligibility date, covered services, provider network, and renewal requirements.

Spouse or other employer coverage

Ask the plan administrator how to invoke special enrollment and request the process in writing. DOL says the request generally must be made within 30 days of losing eligibility for the former coverage. The exact effective date and documentation requirements belong to that plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

COBRA

Request the election notice and calculate the full premium before choosing it. COBRA can avoid a doctor or prescription-network disruption, but paying up to 102% of the plan cost can be substantially more than the employee payroll deduction. DOL’s overview is at DOL COBRA. The election period is generally 60 days measured from the later of the notice date or the date coverage ends; use the dates in your notice.

Marketplace, Medicaid, and CHIP

Use the official Marketplace at HealthCare.gov’s job-based coverage options and review the unemployed-coverage guidance at HealthCare.gov unemployed coverage. Compare premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, and effective date. Marketplace savings are based on estimated household income for the whole calendar year, so revise the estimate if severance, unemployment, or a new job changes income. Check your state’s Medicaid or CHIP program when household income changes.

Make the comparison in a table of your own, using actual plan documents. A low premium can be offset by a high deductible, narrow network, or uncovered prescription. A COBRA election can sometimes be made retroactively within the permitted election window, but do not rely on that possibility instead of confirming the notice and payment rules.

Protect retirement accounts and tax records

Collect the plan documents

Obtain the latest account statement, SPD, vesting status, distribution rules, beneficiary information, and plan contact. DOL identifies several possible destinations for a former employer’s retirement money: leave it in the former plan if permitted, roll it to a new employer plan, or move it to an IRA. Compare each option’s fees, investment choices, tax treatment, creditor or access rules, and administrative requirements before moving money. Details are in DOL’s benefits-after-job-loss guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pause before withdrawing

Cash from a retirement account may create income tax and other consequences and can reduce long-term financial security. Do not treat a withdrawal as the default emergency fund. If a rollover is considered, confirm whether the transaction is direct or indirect, what withholding applies, and whether the receiving plan accepts the assets.

Plan for taxable payments

Severance and unemployment compensation are generally taxable, but each person’s withholding and filing result differs. Keep payment statements, check withholding, and set aside money as appropriate. Use the IRS information at What if I lose my job? and consult a qualified tax professional for circumstances such as equity compensation, a large severance payment, or multiple states.

Prioritize bills and protect against scams

Adjust spending before a payment is missed

Rebuild the budget using actual cash, confirmed benefits, and the timing of severance. Pause or cancel adjustable subscriptions and discretionary spending. If a payment problem is likely, contact a lender, landlord, utility, or insurer early and request any arrangement in writing. Do not drain retirement savings or take expensive credit before comparing alternatives and understanding the tax cost.

Watch for job and benefit fraud

  • Be suspicious of recruiters or “benefit helpers” demanding an upfront fee, urgent payment, unfamiliar software, or a copy of identity documents.
  • Navigate directly to your state’s unemployment site, HealthCare.gov, or your plan administrator instead of clicking a message link.
  • Never send a Social Security number, bank details, or a password through an unverified email, text, or social-media account.
  • Monitor bank and credit-card activity and review credit reports for unauthorized accounts or address changes.
  • Report suspected unemployment identity theft using DOL’s guidance at DOL unemployment identity fraud.

The CFPB warns about job-related messages that request personal data, fees, unfamiliar software, or a rushed signature. The FTC’s scam guidance is at FTC Job Scams. Legitimate employers and agencies give you a way to verify the request independently.

Use a simple layoff timeline

When Action Record to keep
Before an announcement Complete the cash-flow worksheet, save lawful personal records, update your work history, and find official state portals. Budget, account list, document inventory, resume draft, agency URLs.
Announcement day Capture separation, pay, severance, equity, benefits, and contact details in writing. Notice, packet, calendar reminders, HR and plan contacts.
First week after separation File unemployment, request health-plan notices, compare coverage, and secure personal-account access. Filing confirmation, election notice, premium quotes, password-change record.
Before each deadline Submit special-enrollment or COBRA elections, complete unemployment certifications, and review tax withholding. Completed forms, confirmation numbers, payment receipts, and copies of notices.
During the search Track applications and networking, protect confidential information, and revisit the budget whenever income changes. Job-search log, interview notes, updated cash-flow estimate.

Decision checklists for the two biggest choices

Health coverage

  • What is the monthly premium after any employer contribution ends?
  • What are the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum?
  • Are your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions covered?
  • When can coverage start, and when must you elect it?
  • Does household income qualify you for Marketplace savings, Medicaid, or CHIP, and how must a later income change be reported?

Retirement money

  • What is vested, and what happens to unvested employer contributions?
  • Can the former plan retain the account, and what fees apply?
  • Does a new employer plan accept a rollover?
  • What investment choices, tax treatment, access restrictions, and creditor protections apply to each destination?
  • Will the transaction be direct, or will you receive funds subject to withholding?

Where to get case-specific help

Federal guidance supplies a framework, not a ruling on your situation. Confirm unemployment eligibility with your state agency; health deadlines and premiums with the plan administrator or official Marketplace; retirement rules with the plan administrator; and contract, release, equity, or tax questions with a qualified attorney or tax professional. Keep every notice and confirmation because the written dates—not a general article—control your next action.
