The most reliable way to find a Super PAC’s donations and spending is to use the Federal Election Commission’s (FEC) campaign-finance database, then verify the headline number against the committee’s filings. Search for the committee, confirm its FEC ID and election cycle, check the reporting dates and filing version, and inspect the underlying receipt, disbursement, and independent-expenditure records.
That process matters because a Super PAC’s receipts are money it received, while independent expenditures are spending reported to support or oppose candidates. They are different measures, may cover different periods, and can change as amended filings and newly processed reports appear.

What a Super PAC is—and what its numbers mean
The FEC classification is “Super PAC (independent expenditure only).” The committee may solicit and accept unlimited contributions from individuals, corporations, labor organizations, and other sources. It makes only independent expenditures and generally does not contribute to candidates, party committees, or other political committees unless the recipient is itself an independent-expenditure committee. - Receipts: money reported as received by the committee. A contribution from a donor appears here.
- Disbursements: money the committee reports paying out. This category can include operating costs and payments that are not independent expenditures.
- Independent expenditures: spending that expressly advocates the election or defeat of a clearly identified federal candidate and is not made in concert or cooperation with, or at the request or suggestion of, that candidate, campaign, or party. The FEC’s file description is at Independent expenditures file description.
A large receipt total does not tell you how much a committee spent, and an independent-expenditure total does not tell you who funded the committee. Treat the two sides of the ledger separately before drawing conclusions.

Start with the committee’s identity and scope
Search by name, then switch to the FEC ID
Open the FEC’s Campaign finance data page and search for the committee name. Names, abbreviations, and “standing together” or “victory” phrases can be similar, so confirm the committee profile before using any number. Record the unique FEC ID shown on that profile. The ID is the safest key for later searches and prevents you from mixing records from similarly named committees.
The FEC’s public-records checklist, How to research PACs, parties and other committees, recommends working from the committee record and then reviewing its filings, financial summaries, contributions, independent expenditures, and any relevant enforcement or audit material.
Write down the election cycle and coverage dates
On the committee profile and report pages, note the election cycle and the start and end dates covered by the summary or report. A cycle total and a single monthly report are not comparable figures. A report’s coverage end date defines the period represented by its receipts and disbursements; the date the FEC received the report is a separate field.

For every figure you plan to quote, capture:
- committee name and FEC ID;
- election cycle;
- report name and report type;
- coverage start and end dates;
- FEC receipt date;
- filing version and document status; and
- the database-check date.
Find donations and identify the donors
Use the committee’s receipts and contribution records
From the committee profile, open the financial summary and the receipts or contributions view. The FEC’s individual-contribution search is available at Browse Individual contributions. That URL contains an example committee ID and 2024 cycle; replace the committee and cycle filters with the ones for the committee you are checking.
Review individual-contribution records transaction by transaction when you need to answer “who gave how much?” Check the donor name, date, amount, receipt type, reporting period, and any memo or amendment information displayed with the transaction. A financial-summary total is useful for orientation, but the underlying receipt entries show what is included in that total.

Separate individual contributions from other receipt categories
Do not describe all receipts as individual donations. A Super PAC may receive money from corporations, labor organizations, partnerships, and other entities as well as individuals. If your question concerns a particular donor type, use the relevant receipt category and state that category in your description. If you are reporting “total receipts,” label it as total receipts rather than “donations from individuals.”
Check the reporting period and processing status
The FEC explains that receipts are reported periodically and that data is updated as filings are processed. A number visible in the database is therefore a reported figure at a particular point in time, not a promise that no later filing will alter it. Electronic filings can require days for multi-step categorization and coding; paper filings can take weeks. Newly filed summary data may also take up to 48 hours to appear on a committee profile. When a donor total seems lower than a press release or news story, first check whether the story used a different cutoff date, whether a recent filing is still processing, or whether an amended report changed the entries. Do not silently combine the two periods.
Verify how much the Super PAC spent
Start with disbursements, then isolate independent expenditures
Open the committee’s disbursement records for the same cycle and coverage period used for receipts. Disbursements are the committee’s reported payments, but they are not automatically election spending. To measure spending supporting or opposing candidates, open the independent-expenditure records and Schedule E filings.

- payee;
- amount;
- date the communication was disseminated;
- purpose;
- candidate supported or opposed;
- office sought;
- election; and
- aggregate spending for that race and election.
Use those fields to determine whether a number refers to one advertisement, one payment, a candidate-specific aggregate, or the committee’s broader total. Compare the transaction-level entry with the financial summary rather than relying solely on a chart or headline.

Schedule E includes an independence certification. That certification documents what the committee reported and certified to the FEC. It is not, by itself, an independent factual finding that no coordination occurred. If coordination is the issue, distinguish the committee’s filing position from an FEC enforcement determination, court finding, or other independently established fact.
Do not miss expedited notices
Some independent expenditures are reported on expedited 24- or 48-hour notices instead of, or in addition to, regular reports. The applicable rule depends on the amount accumulated and the date the communication was publicly distributed relative to the election.

These are conditional reporting thresholds, not universal limits on Super PAC spending. Check the live, election-specific calendar and current rules before saying that a report was late or missing. The FEC’s 2026 page, 24- and 48-Hour Reports of independent expenditures for 2026, lists the relevant periods and forms and warns that its informational page does not replace the law or change its meaning.
Check amendments, versions, and report status
Use the latest valid version for a current figure
In the FEC report browser, filter by committee and cycle, then inspect the report’s receipt date, coverage end date, report type, version, and document status. An amended report can replace or correct an original filing. If an amended version exists, use it when describing the committee’s latest reported figures and identify the amendment date or version in your notes.

Do not add an original and its amendment together. They are versions of the same reporting period, not separate pools of money.
Distinguish report totals from transaction totals
A report-level total summarizes the committee’s filing for a period. A transaction search may show individual entries that are still being categorized, corrected, or associated with a different filing. If the two views differ, check the coverage dates, report version, and processing status before deciding that one is wrong.
Account for 24- and 48-hour notices
Some committee financial summaries explicitly exclude 24- and 48-hour independent-expenditure notices. A recent-spending question therefore requires a separate search of those notices even when the profile summary looks complete. The report browser’s report-type and version filters help you locate them.
Compare two committees or two headlines without mixing unlike totals
Before comparing numbers, align every axis below. If one axis differs, describe the comparison as limited rather than presenting the figures as equivalent.

A reproducible verification workflow
- Locate the committee. Search the FEC database by name, open the profile, confirm the committee classification, and copy the FEC ID.
- Set the scope. Select the election cycle and write down the exact coverage dates shown for the summary or report.
- Open the report browser. Filter by committee and cycle. Record the report type, FEC receipt date, coverage end date, version, and document status.
- Choose the current version. If an amendment is listed, use the applicable amended filing and note which version you used.
- Trace receipts. Open receipts and individual-contribution records. Check donor, amount, date, receipt type, reporting period, and any memo or amendment notation.
- Trace spending. Review disbursements, then open independent-expenditure records and Schedule E. Capture payee, amount, purpose, dissemination date, candidate, office, election, and race aggregate.
- Search expedited filings. Review 24- and 48-hour notices, especially for spending close to an election or totals that do not appear in the profile summary.
- Check freshness. Allow for processing delays and look for later filings or amendments before treating the figure as final for the period.
- Preserve the trail. Save the committee ID, report name, dates, version, relevant transaction or Schedule E entry, and the date you checked the database.
How to handle common mismatches
A news story’s total is higher than the FEC profile
Compare the story’s date and cutoff with the profile’s coverage end date. Then check whether the story included expedited notices, used a different committee, or counted a later filing that the profile has not processed. Ask whether the story is reporting receipts, all disbursements, or independent expenditures; the labels are not interchangeable.

The committee name returns several results
Open each profile and verify the committee type, sponsoring organization if shown, cycle activity, and FEC ID. Use the ID for every subsequent search. Never infer identity from an acronym alone.
An amended report changes a donor or payment
Use the current amended version for a statement about the latest reported record. Keep the original version in your notes if you are explaining why an earlier article displayed a different number, and identify both filing dates so readers can reproduce the change.
Recent spending is absent
Check the report’s coverage end date, the FEC receipt date, and the processing note. Search independent-expenditure notices separately because 24- and 48-hour filings may not be included in the committee’s summary. A missing display is not proof that the expenditure did not occur.

Read the Schedule E independence certification and describe it accurately as the committee’s certification. Do not present that filing alone as a factual adjudication. Look for a separate official enforcement or court record before making a definitive coordination claim.
How to document a number for publication or personal checking
For each figure, create a short record with the following fields:
- the committee’s exact name and FEC ID;
- the cycle and report coverage dates;
- the report title and type;
- FEC receipt date;
- original or amended version and document status;
- the activity label: receipts, disbursements, or independent expenditures;
- for a receipt, donor, amount, date, and category;
- for an independent expenditure, payee, amount, purpose, dissemination date, candidate, office, election, and aggregate; and
- the date you accessed the record.
This record makes the comparison reproducible. It also lets you update a statement when a committee files an amendment or when the FEC finishes processing a recent report.
What the FEC database can—and cannot—tell you
The database is the authoritative public record for what committees report to the FEC, but it is not a static ledger. Filings arrive on different schedules, amendments can revise earlier entries, and coding and categorization take time. A profile number should therefore be phrased with its cycle, cutoff, and filing status rather than as an undated lifetime total.
The FEC’s 2026 reporting-calendar guidance is election-specific and informational. Before making a legal or timeliness claim, confirm the election, reporting period, applicable regulation, and any later amendment. A database entry can establish what was filed and certified; it does not by itself resolve every factual or legal question about a committee’s conduct.
