The easiest way to put a current stock price in Excel is to use the built-in Stocks linked data type: enter a ticker, select it, choose Data > Stocks, then add the Price field. Refresh it with Data > Refresh All or Data Type > Refresh.
“Live” needs a qualification. Depending on the exchange and data source, Excel may show a real-time quote, a delayed quote, or the latest value available when you refresh. For historical prices, use STOCKHISTORY. For larger portfolios, custom fields, or lower-delay data, use Power Query with an API or a dedicated add-in.

What “live” means in Excel
These terms are not interchangeable:
- Real-time: The quote reflects current trades without an intentional delay.
- Delayed: The quote is commonly 15 minutes or more behind the market.
- Current-on-refresh: Excel retrieves the latest available value when the workbook or connection refreshes. It is not a continuous streaming feed.
- End-of-day: The value becomes available after the trading session.
- Historical: Excel retrieves past observations for analysis.
Microsoft says Excel’s built-in stock data comes from LSEG Data & Analytics. Its exchange table identifies some U.S. feeds, including Nasdaq Last Sale and Cboe BZX, as real-time, while data from Nasdaq Stock Market, NYSE, NYSE Arca, and OTC Markets is generally delayed by 15 minutes. Coverage and delay can vary by instrument and exchange, so check the Microsoft data-source details. Microsoft also says the data is supplied for informational purposes and is not intended for trading.
Method 1: Use Excel’s Stocks linked data type
This is the best starting point for a personal watchlist or portfolio. It can return price, change, previous close, exchange, last trade time, and other company fields without an API key.

Prerequisites
Microsoft documents the feature for Microsoft 365 users and users with a free Microsoft account, subject to supported editing languages and feature availability. Do not assume every perpetual Excel edition, desktop build, Mac version, or organization account has identical functionality. Check whether your Data tab contains the Stocks command.
Steps
- Enter ticker symbols or company names in a column, for example:
MSFT AAPL NVDA - Select the cells. For a growing watchlist, choose Insert > Table first.
- Choose Data > Stocks.
- Confirm that Excel converts the text into a linked stock data type. A stock icon should appear in the cell.
- Select a converted cell and click Add Column.
- Choose Price. Repeat for Change, Previous Close, Last Trade Time, Exchange, or another available field.
A table is useful because Excel can automatically extend extracted fields when you add more tickers. You can also retrieve a field with a formula. If A2 contains the linked data type, try:
=A2.PriceSome Excel builds or locales display the reference as:
=A2.[Price]For a table named Stocks, Excel may offer syntax such as:
=Stocks[@Ticker].PriceUse Excel’s autocomplete to confirm the exact syntax supported by your build.
Refresh a stock price
To refresh one instrument, right-click its linked cell and choose Data Type > Refresh. To refresh linked data and connections across the workbook, choose Data > Refresh All. Microsoft also documents Ctrl+Alt+F5 for refreshing all workbook connections and linked data types.

Fix an unmatched ticker
If a question-mark icon appears:
- Check the ticker spelling.
- Try an exchange-qualified symbol, such as
XNAS:MSFTorXNYS:IBM. - Click the question mark and choose the correct company, fund, or exchange in the selector pane.
This is especially important for dual-listed companies, foreign securities, ETFs, indexes, currencies, commodities, and companies with similar names. Excel does not support every security or exchange equally.

STOCKHISTORY is excellent for daily closing prices, charts, returns, volatility, highs, lows, and volume. It is not a live intraday quote function. Microsoft says it generally updates after a trading day is complete and cannot provide the details of the current trading day until the relevant market day has completed.
Microsoft documents the function for Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Business Standard, and Business Premium subscriptions. Its syntax is:
=STOCKHISTORY(stock, start_date, [end_date], [interval], [headers], [property1], [property2], ...)A simple example is:
=STOCKHISTORY("MSFT","1/1/2026","8/1/2026")For an exchange-qualified symbol and selected fields:
=STOCKHISTORY("XNAS:MSFT","1/1/2026","8/1/2026",0,1,0,1,2,3,4,5)The property arguments represent fields such as Date, Close, Open, High, Low, and Volume. The result spills into neighboring cells as a dynamic array, so leave enough empty space below and to the right of the formula.

=STOCKHISTORY("MSFT",TODAY()-30,TODAY())With automatic calculation enabled, Microsoft says a formula using an updating function such as TODAY() can refresh when the workbook opens. That still produces historical or completed-session data, not a streaming intraday quote.
Common STOCKHISTORY problems
#N/A: Excel may not recognize the instrument. Try an exchange-qualified symbol.- Function not found: The Excel edition or subscription may not support it.
- No current-day row: The session may not be complete.
- Unexpected dates: Excel interprets date text according to regional settings. Use cell references containing valid dates if necessary.
- Missing weekends or holidays: Non-trading days normally have no regular market observation.
Method 3: Import prices with Power Query and an API
Power Query is the better choice when you have many symbols, need custom columns, or want to merge quotes with a portfolio table. Power Query is not itself a market-data provider: it retrieves and transforms data supplied by an API, CSV download, JSON feed, or commercial service.
General workflow
- Choose a provider and verify exchange coverage, delay, request limits, authentication, and personal or commercial-use terms.
- Obtain an API key if required.
- In Excel, choose Data > Get Data > From Other Sources > From Web.
- Paste the provider’s documented API or CSV URL and complete authentication.
- In Power Query, turn JSON records into a table, expand nested fields, set data types, rename columns, and remove unnecessary fields.
- Choose Close & Load.
- Configure refresh under Data > Queries & Connections > Properties, then use Refresh or Refresh All.
An endpoint may conceptually look like this, but do not use it as a working URL:

Example provider: Alpha Vantage
Alpha Vantage’s documentation covers stock time series, quotes, fundamentals, technical indicators, foreign exchange, and cryptocurrency. It offers a free API key, but its documentation says real-time or 15-minute-delayed U.S. quotes require a premium plan for personal use; commercial users should contact sales. That makes it useful for testing and light personal workbooks, but not automatically suitable for a high-volume or public dashboard.
Power Query failure recovery
- Open Data > Queries & Connections.
- Right-click the query and choose Edit.
- Find the first step showing an error.
- Check the API key, endpoint, request limit, ticker, JSON field names, and privacy or authentication settings.
- Test one symbol before refreshing the entire portfolio.
Reduce rate-limit failures by batching symbols where the provider supports it, caching results, refreshing only when needed, and avoiding one request per worksheet cell.

Method 4: Use an Excel add-in or paid market-data service
Choose this route when you need worksheet functions, broader international coverage, fundamentals, technical indicators, options data, or real-time and intraday access that Excel’s native source cannot provide. “Real-time” still depends on the provider’s plan, exchange rights, and endpoint.
Alpha Vantage Excel add-in
The Alpha Vantage Excel add-in offers access to stock, foreign-exchange, cryptocurrency, fundamental, and technical-indicator data. The marketplace listing describes a free basic service with an API key. Premium access may be required for higher limits and certain real-time functions, and commercial use may require separate approval.
Twelve Data
Twelve Data provides API and spreadsheet-oriented access, including a latest-price endpoint and WebSocket capability. Its pricing page, observed August 18, 2026, listed Basic as free, Grow at $79 per month or $66 per month with annual billing, and Pro at $229 per month or $191 per month with annual billing, with higher tiers available. Prices, credits, and coverage are volatile; verify them before subscribing. Consult the documentation to confirm whether the exchange and endpoint you need are included.
Financial Modeling Prep
Financial Modeling Prep combines prices with fundamentals, ratios, news, crypto, forex, and historical data. Its pricing page, observed August 18, 2026, listed Basic as free with 250 calls per day and end-of-day historical data; Starter at $22 per month billed annually; Premium at $59; and Ultimate at $149. The provider states that displaying or redistributing its data requires a specific agreement.
These services can be more capable than native Excel, but they introduce subscription costs, vendor-specific formulas, API limits, maintenance, and licensing obligations. A personal workbook and a public website are different use cases.

The Data tab has no Stocks button
Check that you are signed in, your Excel build is updated, the editing language is supported, and connected online experiences are allowed by your organization. Feature availability can differ between desktop, Mac, and web versions. If the command remains absent, use STOCKHISTORY if supported or an API-based method.

The price is not changing
The market may be closed, the exchange may provide delayed or end-of-day data, the cell may need a refresh, the security may trade infrequently, or the data source may be temporarily unavailable. Turning on automatic calculation does not guarantee external-data refresh: calculation, linked-data refresh, Power Query refresh, and streaming data are separate mechanisms.
The API refresh is rejected
Confirm that the key has not expired, the plan allows the requested endpoint, the symbol is valid, and you have not exceeded the provider’s quota. Reduce request volume or move to a plan that matches the number of symbols and refresh frequency.
Which method should you choose?
- Simple current quote: Start with Data > Stocks.
- Free personal watchlist: Use the Stocks data type, or test a provider’s free tier.
- Historical daily prices: Use
STOCKHISTORY. - Many symbols or custom transformations: Use Power Query.
- Fundamentals and technical indicators: Compare an add-in or API.
- International markets: Compare provider coverage and use exchange-qualified symbols.
- Real-time or low-delay data: Check a paid provider’s exchange licensing and plan details.
- Trading-grade data: Use a dedicated, properly licensed market-data service rather than relying on ordinary Excel linked data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Excel provide truly live stock prices?
Sometimes, depending on the exchange and feed. Excel’s Stocks data type may provide real-time or delayed information and normally requires a refresh; it is not necessarily a continuous streaming quote.
Why does Excel show yesterday’s stock price?
The market may be closed, the source may be delayed or end-of-day, or the workbook may not have refreshed. Use Data > Refresh All and check the exchange and last-trade fields.
Can STOCKHISTORY show an intraday price?
No. Microsoft documents STOCKHISTORY primarily for historical data and says current-session details generally become available only after the trading day is complete.
Can I publish API stock prices on a public website?
Not automatically. Providers may permit personal or internal use while requiring separate licensing for public display, redistribution, or commercial dashboards. Check the provider’s terms first.
The Bottom Line
Start with Data > Stocks for the simplest refreshable quote. Use STOCKHISTORY for historical analysis, Power Query for larger or customized imports, and a licensed add-in or market-data service when you need specialized or lower-delay coverage. Treat every quote as subject to its provider’s exchange coverage, delay, refresh behavior, and usage terms.
