If an unexpected Amazon recall message asks you to click an unfamiliar link to arrange a refund, treat it as a phishing attempt until you verify it independently. A scam pattern documented by Malwarebytes on August 12, 2025, and described in a July 2025 Federal Trade Commission warning claims that an Amazon purchase was recalled, then directs the recipient to a fake refund or order page.
Real recalls do happen, and Amazon says it may notify affected customers. The safe distinction is not the logo, sender name, or alarming wording. Open Amazon yourself and confirm the product, order, and recall through official channels.

What the fake Amazon recall message says
These messages commonly use an “Amazon Safety Recall” or similar heading. They may claim that a product has a quality or safety problem, tell you to stop using it immediately, and promise a full refund—sometimes without requiring a return.
The message typically includes an order number and a link labeled something like “view order details,” “claim your refund,” or “confirm eligibility.” It may use Amazon-style branding and formal language.

In the sample analyzed by Malwarebytes, the product and hazard were not clearly identified. The link redirected away from Amazon to a phishing site designed to imitate Amazon and collect personal or financial information. Other campaigns may use different links or infrastructure.
Why the scam is convincing
- Fear: The word “safety” makes you worry that someone in your household could be injured.
- Urgency: Instructions to stop using a product immediately discourage calm verification.
- Authority: Amazon is a familiar company that appears to know about your purchases.
- Money: The promised refund gives you a reason to click.
- Plausible coincidence: Many people have recently bought something from Amazon, so a generic claim may seem personal.
The scammer does not necessarily need to know what you purchased. A vague message sent to thousands of people only needs to match a recent purchase for some recipients.
The strongest test: verify outside the message
Never use the message to verify itself. Do not click its link, reply, or call a number it provides. Instead:

- Open the Amazon Shopping app, or type Amazon’s address manually into your browser.
- Sign in through the normal Amazon login page.
- Open Your Orders. Check whether the order number and product actually exist.
- Check Message Center for a matching communication.
- Look for Your Recalls and Product Safety Alerts, or an equivalent recalls or product-safety section. Amazon’s labels and menu placement can vary by country, marketplace, app version, and account.
- Inspect the product name, hazard, affected model, and remedy. Follow instructions shown inside Amazon rather than those supplied by the suspicious message.
Amazon says legitimate recall communications may include personalized emails, a banner in Your Orders, push notifications, and information in its recalls and product-safety area. That does not mean every notice will appear in every location immediately, so an uncertain case should be checked through Amazon Customer Service opened independently.
Red flags that deserve caution
- The message does not name the product, model, or specific hazard.
- The order number is missing from your Amazon order history.
- The link uses a non-Amazon or shortened domain.
- The page asks you to log in or enter a password, one-time code, card number, bank details, or identity information.
- The message demands immediate action.
- The refund is offered through an unfamiliar website, phone number, or messaging channel.
- It asks for gift cards, cryptocurrency, a bank transfer, or any upfront payment.
- The sender address, phone number, display name, or Amazon logo looks convincing but cannot be confirmed in your account.
Spelling and grammar are not reliable tests. Modern phishing messages can be polished, and sender information can be spoofed or manipulated. A matching order number is not proof either: it may have been copied, guessed, or included to increase credibility.
Real Amazon recalls are possible
Do not conclude that every Amazon recall email or text is fake. Amazon says that when a government-announced recall affects a product purchased through its store, customers may receive personalized information about the hazard and remedies such as a refund, return, or repair.
A genuine recall should identify the affected product and provide details that can be independently checked. If the product appears to be genuinely recalled, stop using it when the official recall instructions say to do so—but obtain the remedy through Amazon, the manufacturer, or the appropriate regulator, not through an unsolicited external refund page.

For U.S. consumer products, search the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database using the brand, model, product name, or hazard. The CPSC does not cover every category: food, medicine, cosmetics, vehicles, and other products may involve different federal regulators or official manufacturer notices.
What to do with a suspicious text or email
- Do not click, reply, or call.
- Do not provide information. Never send passwords, verification codes, payment details, Social Security numbers, or identity documents in response.
- Check Amazon independently using the steps above.
- Save a screenshot and the message details if you need them for a report.
- Report the message. In the United States, use your phone’s Report Junk feature or forward an unwanted text to 7726 (SPAM), where supported.
- Report the fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Report the impersonation to Amazon through its official reporting or customer-service flow.
- Delete the message after preserving anything needed for reporting.
If you clicked the link
Clicking alone does not prove that your Amazon account or device was compromised, but take sensible precautions:
- Close the page and do not re-enter information.
- Do not download files or install an app it offered.
- Run your device’s current security scan.
- Install pending operating-system, browser, and security updates.
- Open Amazon independently and review orders, saved payment methods, addresses, account changes, and available login activity.
- Be alert for follow-up messages or calls claiming to help “secure” your account.
A security tool can add warnings for some malicious sites, but it cannot replace independent verification or guarantee detection of every new phishing page.

If you entered your Amazon password
Assume the password was exposed—even if the page displayed an error afterward.

- Change the same password anywhere else you reused it.
- Enable Amazon two-step verification.
- Review orders, payment instruments, shipping addresses, contact details, and account-security messages.
- Contact Amazon through its official account interface if you see unauthorized changes.
Watch for password-reset requests, verification codes you did not initiate, or callers who know that you recently received a “recall” message. A second scammer may try to exploit the first incident.

Contact the card issuer or bank immediately using the number on the card or an official statement—not a number in the message. Ask whether the account or card should be blocked or replaced, dispute unauthorized charges, and activate transaction alerts if available.

Monitor statements and account activity. If you submitted identity information, consider making a report through IdentityTheft.gov. Preserve the message, URL, screenshots, transaction records, and related correspondence.
If you sent money or bought gift cards
Contact the payment provider immediately and explain that you were defrauded. For a bank transfer, cryptocurrency payment, gift-card payment, or other difficult-to-reverse transaction, recovery is not guaranteed, but speed may improve your options. Report the incident to the FTC and retain all transaction details.

The rule to remember
A real safety issue should be taken seriously—but an urgent message is not the place to verify it. Open Amazon independently, confirm the product and recall in your account or through an official manufacturer or regulator, and only then follow the remedy instructions.
