Its effective duration was 14.63 years on October 5, 2026, so a parallel 0.50-percentage-point rise in yields implies roughly a 7.3% price decline before convexity and other effects; a 1.00-point rise implies roughly a 14.6% decline. Those are duration-based scenarios, not forecasts or guaranteed total returns.
Before buying, record the fund’s current duration, convexity and maturity, run several yield-change scenarios, then decide whether the potential drawdown fits your holding period and risk tolerance.

What TLT owns and why rates matter
TLT is the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF. It seeks to track an index of U.S. Treasury bonds with more than 20 years remaining until maturity, giving investors targeted exposure to long-duration government debt.

A Treasury security can have very low credit-default risk while still losing substantial market value when prevailing yields rise. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin summarizes the relationship plainly: “market interest rates and bond prices move in opposite directions—for example, when market interest rates go up, prices of fixed-rate bonds fall.” Longer-maturity bonds generally experience larger price effects from a given rate move.

Because TLT concentrates on the long end of the Treasury curve, long-term yields—not just the federal funds rate or short-term bills—are the key market variable. A rate move can also affect TLT even when investors continue to regard U.S. government credit as strong.
TLT’s relevant statistics as of October 5, 2026
The figures below are a dated issuer snapshot from BlackRock/iShares. Portfolio statistics can change, so use the latest fund page and prospectus when making an actual purchase decision.
| Measure | Reported value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Effective duration | 14.63 years | Primary first-order measure of price sensitivity to a parallel change in yields. |
| Convexity | 3.06 | Describes the curvature of the price-yield relationship and refines a duration-only estimate for larger moves. |
| Weighted average maturity | 26.08 years | Average remaining term of the bonds; it is not the same as duration. |
| 30-day SEC yield | 5.59% | A standardized recent-income measure; it does not guarantee future distributions or total return. |
| 12-month trailing yield | 5.05% | Income paid over the prior 12 months relative to the share price; historical, not a promise. |
| Average yield to maturity | 5.72% | An estimate based on the portfolio’s bonds if held to maturity under stated assumptions; an ETF investor can sell before then. |
| Expense ratio | 0.15% | The stated prospectus fee that reduces fund assets over time. |
Duration is the headline risk statistic. Maturity tells you how long the underlying bonds have remaining, while duration estimates how the portfolio’s price responds to a yield change after considering cash-flow timing. The 26.08-year weighted average maturity therefore should not be substituted for the 14.63-year duration in a price-sensitivity calculation.
Step 1: Confirm the date and the definitions
Do not copy a duration number without its “as of” date. TLT’s holdings, cash flows and market yields change, and the resulting duration and convexity are portfolio characteristics rather than permanent specifications. On the issuer page, verify:
- Effective duration, including the date and the provider’s definition.
- Convexity and any units or methodology notes supplied with it.
- Weighted average maturity and the maturity range targeted by the index.
- The exact yield measure you are reading—30-day SEC yield, trailing yield or yield to maturity.
- The current expense ratio and the prospectus in force for the fund.
The figures in this article are the October 5, 2026 snapshot. They are useful for illustrating the method, but they should be refreshed immediately before a trade.
Step 2: Convert duration into a rate-rise scenario
FINRA defines duration risk as “the risk associated with the sensitivity of a bond’s price to a one percent change in interest rates.” A practical first-order calculation is:
Approximate percentage price change = −effective duration × change in yield
Express the yield change as a decimal. A 0.50-percentage-point move is 0.005, and a 1.00-percentage-point move is 0.010. With an effective duration of 14.63 years:

| Parallel change in yields | Duration-only estimate | Illustration for a $10,000 position |
|---|---|---|
| +0.25 percentage point | Approximately −3.66% | About −$366 |
| +0.50 percentage point | Approximately −7.32% | About −$732 |
| +1.00 percentage point | Approximately −14.63% | About −$1,463 |
| +2.00 percentage points | Approximately −29.26% | About −$2,926 |
The dollar figures simply apply the percentages to a hypothetical $10,000 exposure; they are not predictions of TLT’s future share price. The estimates assume the entire relevant yield curve shifts by the same amount, and they exclude convexity, distributions, trading costs, taxes and other market effects.
The same first-order calculation gives gains when yields fall. For example, a parallel 0.50-point decline would imply approximately a 7.32% price increase before the same adjustments. Actual gains and losses will not be perfectly symmetrical because bond prices have convex, rather than straight-line, relationships with yields.
Step 3: Account for convexity instead of treating duration as exact
Duration is a first-order approximation. Convexity captures the curvature that becomes more important as the rate move gets larger. In simplified form, a price-change estimate can be written as:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Percentage price change ≈ −D × Δy + 0.5 × C × (Δy)2
Here, D is effective duration, C is the fund’s convexity measure and Δy is the yield change expressed as a decimal. TLT’s reported convexity was 3.06 on October 5, 2026. Use the provider’s convention and units when applying it; do not assume that a convexity figure can be combined with numbers from another source without checking definitions.
Convexity does not tell you whether rates will rise or fall. It only improves the description of how price sensitivity changes as yields move. For a small shift, the duration term usually dominates. For a larger shift, omitting convexity can make the estimate less useful, which is why a duration-only result should be presented as a rough scenario rather than an exact loss limit.
Step 4: Ask whether the shift would be parallel
The calculation assumes every relevant Treasury yield changes by the same number of percentage points. Markets rarely move in such a uniform way. The two-year, ten-year and thirty-year portions of the curve can move by different amounts, and the curve can steepen or flatten. Since TLT targets bonds with more than 20 years remaining maturity, a move concentrated in long-term yields can matter more to it than a similar move confined to short-term rates.

- Uniform shift: every relevant yield rises by the same amount, using the duration calculation above.
- Long-end move: long-term yields rise while short-term yields move less or not at all; this can be particularly relevant to TLT.
- Favorable-rate case: long-term yields fall, recognizing that the gain estimate also needs a convexity adjustment.
These cases are sensitivity tests. They do not forecast the Federal Reserve, inflation, economic growth or the next bond-market move.
Separate income yield from share-price risk
TLT’s displayed yields answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable:
| Yield measure | What it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 30-day SEC yield: 5.59% | A standardized measure based on recent portfolio income and expenses. | It does not lock in a future distribution or protect the share price. |
| 12-month trailing yield: 5.05% | Income actually distributed over the preceding 12 months relative to price. | It does not predict the next 12 months’ income or price return. |
| Average yield to maturity: 5.72% | An estimate of the portfolio’s yields to maturity under its calculation assumptions. | ETF shares can be sold before the bonds mature, and the estimate is not a guaranteed investor return. |
A yield is an income-rate statistic, not a floor under net asset value. If long-term yields rise, the market value of TLT’s existing fixed-rate bonds can fall even while the fund continues to receive coupon payments. Your total return combines price change, distributions, expenses and the timing of your purchase and sale.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe 0.15% expense ratio is deducted from fund assets. It is small relative to a double-digit duration scenario, but it still reduces returns over time and belongs in a realistic holding-period calculation.
Decide whether TLT fits your risk budget
Match the holding period to the risk
A long-duration ETF can experience a large interim loss even if the bonds ultimately pay principal at maturity. If you may need the money on a fixed date, ask whether you could sell after a rate rise and accept the duration-based loss. A short or uncertain holding period leaves less time for income and changing yields to offset an unfavorable entry price.
Set a tolerable drawdown in dollars
Start with the maximum decline you could accept without selling under pressure. Divide that dollar amount by the proposed position size, then compare the result with the scenario table. For example, an investor who cannot tolerate a loss of roughly $1,500 on a $10,000 allocation should recognize that the duration-only estimate for a 1-point parallel rise is in that range before convexity and other effects. If the result exceeds the investor’s limit, reducing the allocation or selecting a shorter-duration exposure is a risk decision—not a prediction about rates.
Identify the job the position must perform
- Income: compare the chosen yield measure with the possibility of price volatility and changing distributions.
- Rate exposure: understand that TLT is a concentrated long-duration position, not a general substitute for every Treasury maturity.
- Portfolio diversification: test how a rate shock would affect the rest of your holdings at the same time.
- Speculation on falling yields: accept that the trade depends on market rates and timing; the yield statistics do not make the outcome certain.
How to compare TLT with another Treasury fund
A fair comparison uses the same measures, dates and yield definitions. Do not compare TLT’s 30-day SEC yield with another fund’s trailing yield and call the higher number a better return. Build a side-by-side sheet with:
| Comparison axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Effective duration | How much first-order price sensitivity does each fund have for the same yield move? |
| Maturity range and weighted average maturity | Does the fund concentrate in short, intermediate or long maturities? |
| Convexity | How does each fund’s price-yield curvature affect larger scenarios? |
| Yield measure and date | Are the displayed yields calculated the same way and measured on the same date? |
| Expense ratio | How much of the gross portfolio return is consumed by fees? |
| Intended holding period | Can you tolerate the likely interim volatility for as long as you plan to hold? |
In general, a shorter-duration Treasury fund has less sensitivity to a given rate move because its duration is lower. That does not automatically make it superior: lower rate exposure can also mean a smaller gain if yields fall. The correct comparison depends on the exposure your portfolio needs and the loss you can withstand.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using maturity as duration
Mistake: treating TLT’s 26.08-year weighted average maturity as a 26.08% loss for a 1-point rate rise.
Correction: use the current effective duration—14.63 years in the October 5, 2026 snapshot—for the first-order estimate. Maturity and duration measure different characteristics.
Calling a duration estimate a forecast
Mistake: presenting “TLT will fall 14.6%” as a promised result.
Correction: say that a parallel 1-point increase implies approximately that price sensitivity before convexity and other effects. Market rates, curve shape, distributions and trading conditions determine the realized result.
Assuming a Treasury ETF cannot lose money
Mistake: equating low issuer credit risk with a stable share price.
Correction: separate credit exposure from interest-rate exposure. Long-maturity fixed-rate bonds can decline in market value when yields rise.
Reading one yield as a guaranteed return
Mistake: treating the 5.59% SEC yield, 5.05% trailing yield or 5.72% average yield to maturity as a locked-in total return.

Ignoring the “as of” date
Mistake: using an old duration or yield after the portfolio and market have changed.
Correction: record the date beside every statistic and refresh the figures before placing an order.
Stress-testing only a tiny rate move
Mistake: relying on a single 10-basis-point scenario when your plan could face a much larger move.
Correction: run several changes, then consider convexity for the larger cases. Keep the assumptions visible so the result is not mistaken for a forecast.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Open the current TLT issuer page and prospectus.
- Write down effective duration, convexity, weighted average maturity, the yield measure you intend to use, the “as of” date and the expense ratio.
- Calculate
−duration × yield changefor at least 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 percentage-point parallel increases. - Translate the percentages into dollars for the position size you are considering.
- Run a long-end-specific scenario in which long-term yields rise more than short-term yields.
- For larger moves, review the convexity measure and the provider’s methodology rather than treating duration as exact.
- Check whether the worst scenario would force you to sell before your intended holding period.
- Compare any alternative Treasury exposure using matching duration, maturity, yield definition, date and fees.
- Decide the maximum allocation before buying, and document the rate scenario that would make you reduce or exit it.
What to monitor after buying
Interest-rate risk is not fixed at the moment of purchase. Recheck the issuer’s duration, convexity, maturity and yield data periodically, especially after a large market move or a material change in the fund’s portfolio. Keep the original purchase date and the current statistics together so you can distinguish a change in market rates from a change in the fund’s exposure.
Monitor the long-term Treasury yields most relevant to the fund rather than relying solely on short-term policy headlines. Also track the yield definition you use for income planning; switching between SEC, trailing and yield-to-maturity figures can create an apparent change that is mainly a measurement difference.
Decision rule
TLT is appropriate only if you knowingly want long-duration Treasury exposure and can withstand a substantial mark-to-market decline. The October 5, 2026 effective duration of 14.63 years provides a clear starting point: a 0.50-point parallel rise suggests about a 7.3% price decline before convexity, while a 1-point rise suggests about a 14.6% decline. Use current figures, test nonparallel curve moves, distinguish income from price return and size the position around the loss you can actually tolerate.
