How to Compare Fuel Prices and Find the Cheapest Gas Near You

The cheapest fuel near you is not always the station with the lowest number on a map. A reliable comparison means checking the same fuel grade at nearby or along-route stations, confirming when each price was updated, calculating whether a detour costs more than it saves, and checking the pump before you pay. In the UK, the government’s Fuel Finder data gives drivers price, station and timestamp information through participating apps and websites. Elsewhere, use the official or regulator-backed service that covers your area and verify its update schedule.

What “cheapest fuel” should mean

Start with a like-for-like comparison. Regular unleaded, premium unleaded, diesel and other grades are separate products, so a lower price for a different grade is not a genuine saving if your vehicle requires another fuel. Comparison services organise their listings by fuel type for this reason.

Your real cost is the price you pay for the fuel plus the cost of reaching the station. A station that is 6 pence per litre cheaper may still be a poor choice if reaching it requires a long detour, extra traffic or a return journey. Conversely, a station only a short distance off your route can be worthwhile even when the price difference looks modest.

Prices are also time-sensitive. A listing can be accurate when published and wrong later if the forecourt has changed its price. Treat every result as a time-stamped indication, not a guaranteed quote.

Choose a comparison service that covers your location

There is no single worldwide fuel-price database. Coverage, fuel grades, update frequency and route tools differ by country and sometimes by region. Before relying on an app or website, check the following:

  • Geographic coverage: Does it include your town, state, territory or the roads on your trip?
  • Fuel grades: Can you select the exact grade your vehicle uses?
  • Freshness: Is the update date or time shown for each station?
  • Search mode: Can you search near your current location, near a destination or along a planned route?
  • Station information: Are address, operator, opening hours and amenities shown?
  • Error reporting: Is there a clear way to report a price that does not match the sign or pump?

For UK drivers, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says Fuel Finder data is available through third-party apps and websites. Its March 2026 driver factsheet lists Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy, Google Maps, MoneyHelper, MoneySuperMarket, MotorMouth, PetrolPrices.com, Petrol Savings, RAC Fuel Watch and Waze as examples. The government does not say that these services have identical coverage or features; its advice is that drivers should search online for the app or site that works best for them.

Official references also exist for other markets. France has a government fuel-price search, Germany has the Market Transparency Unit, and Australian regulator material describes state and territory services. Those references do not establish that one service covers every location or has the same data fields as UK Fuel Finder, so confirm local coverage before comparing prices.

Comparison criteria at a glance

Criterion Why it matters What to check before relying on a result
Area covered A low price is useless if the station is outside your practical route. Search your postcode, town, state or destination and inspect the map.
Fuel grade Different grades are different products and cannot be compared fairly. Select the exact grade specified for your vehicle.
Timestamp Prices can change after a listing is published. Look for the station’s update date and time.
Search type A nearby station may not be convenient on a long trip. Use nearby and along-route views where available.
Station details Opening hours and access affect whether the saving is usable. Check address, operator, amenities and hours.
Mismatch process Listings can be wrong or stale. Use the service’s reporting route, and in the UK use the official discrepancy process.

How to compare prices step by step

  1. Identify the fuel you need. Check the fuel-door label, owner’s manual or vehicle documentation. Record the grade before opening a comparison app.
  2. Open a service that covers your area. Allow location access only if you want a nearby search; otherwise enter a postcode, town or destination manually.
  3. Select the same fuel grade everywhere. Do not compare regular unleaded at one station with premium unleaded at another. If the service uses abbreviations, verify what each label means.
  4. Set a practical search area. Start with stations close to your current location. For a journey, enter the destination and use an along-route option if available.
  5. Read the full listing. Note the displayed price, station address, operator, opening hours and the timestamp. A pin that appears close on a map may be on a different side of a divided road or require an inconvenient turn.
  6. Shortlist realistic candidates. Keep two or three stations whose locations fit your route. A single lowest-price result is vulnerable to a stale listing or an access problem.
  7. Calculate the net saving. Multiply the price difference by the litres you expect to buy, then compare that amount with the extra fuel, time, tolls or parking caused by the detour.
  8. Recheck immediately before leaving. Refresh the listing or note its timestamp. If the price is old, treat the result as uncertain and keep a backup station.
  9. Verify at the forecourt. Read the roadside sign and pump display before authorising the transaction. If the price differs, decide whether the station still works for you before fuelling.
  10. Record and report a mismatch. If the advertised or listed price is wrong, save the station name or address, date, time, displayed price, charged price and where each figure appeared.

Work out whether a detour really saves money

The basic calculation is:

Fuel saving = (your usual price − alternative price) × litres purchased

Then subtract the cost of the extra distance:

Net saving = fuel saving − extra travel cost − tolls or other additional costs

For an illustration, suppose you plan to buy 40 litres and find a station 5 pence per litre cheaper. The gross saving is £2. If the detour uses £1.20 of fuel and creates no other cost, the theoretical net saving is 80 pence. If it uses £2.50 of fuel or requires a toll, the detour loses money. Those figures are examples of the method, not a universal threshold.

There is no official mileage or price difference that works for every driver. Your break-even point changes with tank size, vehicle efficiency, traffic, fuel prices, passenger time and whether the stop lies on a trip you were already making. A driver who is nearly empty may value a convenient station more than a driver passing several alternatives on a regular commute.

Use your own numbers

  • Estimate litres purchased, not the vehicle’s full tank capacity, if you are only topping up.
  • Estimate the additional kilometres or miles from your actual route, including the return to the route.
  • Use your vehicle’s typical fuel economy rather than a laboratory figure.
  • Include tolls, parking charges and the value of significant extra travel time.
  • Recalculate when traffic or route conditions change.

What UK Fuel Finder data tells you

UK Fuel Finder records more than a headline price. The government says the data includes price by fuel type, forecourt details, address, operator, brand, amenities, opening hours and update timestamps. These fields let you screen out a station that is cheap but closed, difficult to reach or selling the wrong grade.

Fuel Finder guidance published on 2 February 2026 states: “Prices are published within 30 minutes of any change.” That is a reporting requirement for UK stations, not a promise that every app displays a change instantly. An app may have its own refresh cycle, and a station’s sign or pump can still differ from a listing.

The downloadable Fuel Finder CSV is updated twice a day. A live app or API feed and a downloaded file can therefore have different freshness even when both use Fuel Finder data. If you are deciding between two close prices, prefer the result with the clearer and more recent timestamp.

How to read a UK listing

  • Fuel type: Confirm the grade, especially where regular and premium products are listed together.
  • Price: Check the unit and decimal placement before comparing.
  • Address: Verify the road entrance, not just the map pin.
  • Opening hours: A low price is irrelevant if the forecourt is closed when you arrive.
  • Amenities: These can matter when you need toilets, a shop, charging or another service during a longer trip.
  • Timestamp: Treat older updates as less certain and refresh before setting out.

Verify the price at the station

Use the listing to choose where to stop, then use the forecourt to decide whether the price is still valid. Read the large roadside sign first, because it often shows the current advertised price for each grade. At the pump, select the correct grade and check the price displayed before lifting the nozzle. Keep the receipt if the amount charged does not match what was advertised.

In the UK, stations are required to update prices within 30 minutes of a price change, and the government provides a service for reporting discrepancies. A report can be appropriate when a listing, sign or pump is materially inconsistent. Capture:

  • the forecourt name and address;
  • the date and exact time;
  • the fuel grade;
  • the price shown in the app or website;
  • the price on the sign or pump;
  • the amount charged, if you bought fuel; and
  • whether the information came from a sign, pump, receipt or digital listing.

The UK discrepancy service may share reports with the operator or Trading Standards. Describe the mismatch factually and keep photographs or a receipt where lawful and practical. Outside the UK, use the consumer-protection or regulator channel for your jurisdiction; the reporting route and enforcement powers vary.

Strategies that improve the chance of a genuine saving

Search before the tank is nearly empty

Waiting until the warning light appears removes your choice. Check prices while you still have enough fuel to reach more than one station safely. This also gives you time to compare a nearby option with an along-route option.

Compare the route, not just the radius

A station that is geographically close may sit behind a barrier, on the opposite carriageway or beyond a difficult junction. Route-based search is more useful for road trips, while a radius search works better for local errands.

Use timestamps to break close calls

When two stations differ by only a small amount, a newer update may be more valuable than the nominally lower price. A slightly higher, recently updated listing can be a safer choice than an old low price.

Keep a backup

Save a second station in case the first is closed, congested or has changed its price. This is particularly useful when travelling outside normal opening hours or through areas with sparse coverage.

Consider the whole purchase

If you need a shop, accessible facilities or a particular payment method, include those requirements before choosing. A small fuel saving that forces a second stop can increase your total cost.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

Mistake Why it produces a bad decision Fix
Comparing different grades The apparent saving is caused by a different product. Select the same grade at every station.
Ignoring the timestamp The displayed price may predate a change. Choose a service that shows update time and refresh before leaving.
Picking the map’s lowest number automatically The detour can cost more than the fuel saving. Calculate gross and net savings for your planned litres and route.
Assuming every app has the same stations Coverage and features vary between services. Test local coverage and compare the fields each service provides.
Failing to check access or hours A cheap station may be closed or impractical to enter. Review address, opening hours and route position.
Trusting a listing over the pump Digital data can lag or contain an error. Check the sign and pump, then report a mismatch.
Driving farther for a tiny saving Extra fuel, time or tolls can erase the difference. Use the net-saving calculation, not price per litre alone.

How much could you save?

The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates an average saving of £40 per year for car-owning households using Fuel Finder. This is a government estimate for an average household, not a guaranteed individual result. Your outcome depends on how often you drive, how many litres you buy, the local price spread, how much of your route is flexible and whether you avoid unnecessary detours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Track your own results for a month or several refuelling stops. Record the station, grade, litres, price, timestamp and any extra distance. This personal record is more useful for future decisions than an average estimate because it reflects your routes and vehicle.

A practical routine for regular drivers

  1. Once a week, check the comparison service you trust for your normal routes.
  2. Note two convenient stations and their latest timestamps.
  3. Before each fill-up, select the correct grade and refresh the search.
  4. Calculate the expected gross saving using your planned litres.
  5. Reject any option whose detour is likely to cost more than that saving.
  6. Confirm the sign and pump price on arrival.
  7. Log the final price and report material discrepancies through the appropriate official channel.

This routine takes less time than repeatedly searching from scratch and helps you recognise whether a small price difference is typical or unusual in your area.

Finding the right service outside the UK

For readers in France, Germany, Australia or another country, begin with the transport ministry, energy regulator or consumer-protection authority. Look for a searchable station-price service that identifies the fuel grade and publication time. In Australia, regulator material points drivers toward state and territory services; coverage and update rules can differ between them. In France and Germany, government-backed systems are available, but the existence of a national service does not guarantee identical station coverage or real-time updates in every region.

Before using any local service, answer four questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does it cover the roads and stations you use?
  • Does it list the exact fuel grade and unit of measurement?
  • When was each price last updated, and how often does the service refresh?
  • How can you report a listing that conflicts with the sign, pump or receipt?

If no official comparison tool exists, use a reputable local app or website, cross-check a sample of listings against station signs and avoid treating un-timestamped prices as current.

Printable decision checklist

  • ☐ The service covers my location and route.
  • ☐ I can see when each candidate price was updated.
  • ☐ I checked the station address, access and opening hours.
