Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →GnuCash’s ordinary account register does not document a command to select several transactions and delete them in one operation. Delete each selected transaction separately with Transaction → Delete Transaction (or the toolbar’s Delete button). For a long cleanup, a version-sensitive keyboard shortcut can speed up the same one-at-a-time process; it is not true batch deletion. Make a backup first, especially when removing historical or imported data.
Delete transactions individually in the account register
- Save and copy the file. Keep an untouched backup and work on a separately named copy for a large cleanup.
- Open the relevant account register and select the unwanted recorded transaction.
- Choose Transaction → Delete Transaction, or click the toolbar’s Delete button. Older releases may show Actions → Delete; see the current manual and older help for the differing labels.
- Confirm the warning if it appears.
- Repeat for every unwanted transaction, save, and check balances and reconciliation status.
The current documentation describes deletion of the selected/current transaction. User-support discussions likewise report deleting entries individually; the official register documentation does not establish a multi-row “delete all” operation (manual; user mailing list).
Why Ctrl-click or Shift-click does not provide bulk deletion
Do not assume that selecting several rows with Ctrl-click or Shift-click makes the register’s Delete command apply to every row. GnuCash supports forms of multi-selection in windows such as the import matcher and reconciliation window, but that is not a documented bulk-delete feature for the normal account register. In the reconciliation window, deletion is documented for the currently selected transaction even though multiple entries can be selected for reconciliation-status changes (reconciliation manual; reconcile window guide).
Speed up repeated deletions with an unofficial shortcut
A community workaround assigns a keyboard accelerator to the delete-transaction action. It still deletes one selected transaction at a time, but avoids repeatedly opening the menu. One reported entry is:

"<Primary><Shift>Delete")
<Primary> generally means Ctrl on Windows and Command on macOS. The action name and accelerator behavior are version-sensitive: GnuCash’s shortcut documentation notes internal-name changes between versions 4.9 and 5.1, and the recipe comes from user reports rather than a universal supported feature (keyboard-shortcut documentation; community example; recent discussion).
- Close GnuCash completely.
- Back up both the data file and your user configuration directory.
- Locate the user-level
accelerator-mapfile and add or edit the delete-transaction line, removing a leading semicolon if it is commented out. - Reopen GnuCash and test the shortcut on a disposable copy.
- Keep deletion confirmations enabled until the shortcut and selection behavior are proven safe.
GnuCash can remember a warning choice for the session or permanently. If warnings were disabled, use Actions → Reset Warnings to restore them (manual).

Use a safer workflow for hundreds or thousands of records
For a large historical range, permanent deletion may be the wrong solution. Keep one untouched historical file and create a trimmed working copy. Record balances immediately before cleanup, delete entries sequentially in the copy, verify that remaining accounts balance, and add appropriate opening-balance transactions if the retained file starts at a new date. Reconcile the retained period again where needed. This archive-and-opening-balance method is a practical workaround, not a native GnuCash purge feature (user discussion).
Deleting old rows can change running and opening balances, reconciliation continuity, multi-year reports, investment lots, invoice and bill relationships, and transfers whose counterpart entries are outside the retained period. Decide whether you need a shorter working file or truly want to destroy the history.

Choose a different fix for imported or special transactions
Bad bank or CSV import
- Preserve the original file.
- If the import is still in the matcher, cancel it rather than deleting posted entries.
- If it was committed, restore a pre-import backup or work on a copy and remove the bad transactions individually.
- Correct the source file or import settings, then re-import and verify matching.
Multi-selection in the import matcher for assigning destination accounts should not be confused with register bulk deletion (keyboard-shortcut documentation).
Split transactions
A transaction can contain several splits. To change one component, select the transaction, choose Split or Actions → Split Transaction, and edit or remove the relevant split. Deleting a split is not necessarily deleting the complete transaction (manual).

Invoices, bills, and read-only postings
Business-generated accounts-receivable or accounts-payable postings may be read-only. Correct them through the associated invoice or bill—typically by unposting, editing, and reposting—rather than treating them like ordinary bank-register entries (business-features notes).
Reconciled or audit-sensitive entries
If preserving an audit trail matters, consider voiding or correcting a transaction instead of deleting it. Voiding preserves a record while changing its financial effect; the appropriate treatment depends on the transaction and your accounting requirements.

Moving an entire account
Deleting an account can offer to move its transactions elsewhere, which is useful for reorganizing an account hierarchy. It is not a way to delete selected transactions and operates at a much broader scope (Using GnuCash).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting deletion problems
Delete is disabled or nothing happens
Check that you selected a recorded transaction, not the register’s blank entry row reserved for entering a new transaction. Sorting and future-dated entries can make that row appear away from the bottom (user support discussion).
The wrong data disappears from another account
GnuCash transactions involve at least two accounts and contain corresponding splits. Deleting a transaction from one register removes the transaction itself and its splits from the other affected registers; it does not merely erase the visible row (common transaction operations).
You need to undo a deletion
Do not rely on a universal transaction-level undo. If the program still permits it, close without saving; otherwise restore the verified backup. Test recovery procedures on a copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou are considering direct file editing
Editing the underlying XML or database directly can break balancing, split links, commodities, reconciliation state, invoices, and file integrity. Treat it as an expert-only last resort, not a normal bulk-delete method.
Quick Recap
Best approach by situation
| Situation | Best approach |
|---|---|
| One mistaken entry | Delete it from the register. |
| A few dozen ordinary entries | Delete individually; a tested shortcut may help. |
| Hundreds of entries | Work on a copy and use a version-tested shortcut with confirmations on. |
| Thousands of historical entries | Archive the original and create a trimmed working file with opening balances. |
| Bad recent import | Restore the pre-import backup and re-import with corrected settings. |
| Invoice- or bill-generated posting | Correct the source invoice or bill workflow. |
| Need an audit trail | Void or correct rather than delete. |
| Move all transactions from an account | Use account deletion/reassignment cautiously. |
