GitHub introduced the Student Developer Pack with 12 outside companies, combining hosting, domains, testing, databases, email, payments, collaboration and game-development tools. Those 12 partners describe the original bundle, not the current program: GitHub now presents the Pack as a changing catalog of more than 80 professional-grade tools.

What GitHub announced on October 7, 2014
The announcement launched the GitHub Student Developer Pack. Its aim was practical: let eligible students learn with tools normally sold to commercial developers instead of relying only on simplified classroom software.
The launch bundle had 14 components in the VentureBeat account: GitHub and Atom from GitHub itself, plus offers from 12 outside companies. GitHub supplied code hosting, collaboration and code review; Atom was described as a hackable text editor. The partner offers covered much of a small software project’s workflow, from writing and testing code to deploying it and connecting a domain.

The original eligibility rules reported in 2014 required applicants to be at least 13, enrolled in a degree- or diploma-granting course, and able to provide a school email, valid student ID and additional enrollment evidence such as a letter or transcript.

A credit was not cash, and a free period was not unlimited service. The 2014 article’s dollar figures were comparisons with the plans then advertised, not evidence of what any company charges today.
How the launch bundle fit together
Build and store code
Students could edit code in Atom, keep projects on GitHub, review changes and collaborate with classmates. The 2014 package also included private-repository access under GitHub’s then-current plan structure.

Deploy a working application
DigitalOcean supplied hosting credit, while Bitnami helped package applications for deployment. Orchestrate offered a managed database account, and DNSimple handled DNS records. Namecheap added a domain and SSL certificate for a student project that needed a public address.
Automate and operate
Travis CI’s private builds were intended for automated testing. SendGrid covered application email, HackHands offered paid access to live programming help, and Screenhero supported remote collaboration.
Handle specialized projects
Stripe’s fee waiver applied to the first $1,000 in processed revenue under the launch terms. Unreal Engine addressed game and interactive 3D work, while CrowdFlower’s platform supported data-collection and enrichment tasks.
Why “12 companies” is no longer a current description
GitHub’s live Student Developer Pack page is substantially broader than the 2014 bundle. GitHub’s partner information describes more than 80 professional-grade tools and says participation changes regularly. Companies can leave the Pack or provide a benefit independently, so there is no permanent modern list that can be inferred from the 2014 article.

Current categories include cloud infrastructure, domains and SSL, development environments, monitoring and security, databases and APIs, learning platforms, productivity tools, GitHub Copilot and Codespaces-related benefits. Older entries such as Atom, Screenhero, Orchestrate and HackHands should therefore be treated as launch-era history unless the current Pack page specifically lists them.
Do not mix a 2014 offer with a current one. For example, a historical DigitalOcean credit and the current catalog are separate facts; the live redemption page controls what an approved student can actually claim.
Who can apply now
GitHub’s current student guidance says applicants are generally at least 13 and enrolled in a degree- or diploma-granting program. Verification can use a school-issued email address and/or official dated proof of enrollment. Start at GitHub Education for students and consult the student documentation for the current process.
- Use an existing GitHub account or create one.
- Open GitHub’s student application flow and request verification.
- Submit a recognized school email and, if requested, dated enrollment evidence.
- After approval, open the Student Developer Pack and redeem offers individually.
- Read each partner’s eligibility, expiration, billing and usage terms before activating it.
Verification is not a universal pass to every product. A partner may require a separate account, a payment card, additional checks or redemption through its own website.

What “free” can mean in the Pack
- Time-limited access: a subscription may be free for a stated number of months or years.
- Credits: cloud, support or worker credits run down as they are used and can expire.
- Restricted tiers: private builds, storage, seats, bandwidth, API calls or compute may be capped.
- Discounts: a reduced price is different from a zero-cost plan.
- Separate redemption: approval by GitHub may still require activation with the partner.
GitHub’s Student Developer Pack terms state that third-party products are governed by agreements between the student and the partner. GitHub does not guarantee unlimited availability or replace those partner terms.

- Record the expiry date and remaining credit for every service.
- Check whether a card is required and whether usage beyond the allowance can create charges.
- Review limits on traffic, storage, build minutes, API calls, seats and private repositories.
- Do not upload sensitive coursework or personal data without understanding the provider’s data practices.
- Confirm whether the benefit is tied to one GitHub or partner account and whether it can be transferred.
- Keep a portable copy of code, databases and deployment instructions so leaving a vendor is feasible.
Cloud credits are not unlimited hosting. A student can exhaust an allowance through a forgotten server, large data transfer or automated workload. Email, payment and domain services may also impose anti-abuse, identity or commercial-use restrictions.
Choosing offers for common student projects
Portfolio or static site
A domain and SSL benefit can be useful when a custom address matters. If a GitHub Pages subdomain is sufficient, paying for DNS or hosting may add complexity without solving a real problem.
Full-stack web application
Prioritize a small hosting allowance, a database, DNS and automated tests. Set spending alerts before deploying and learn the underlying concepts rather than memorizing one provider’s dashboard.

Data or machine-learning project
Worker or cloud credits can help with experiments, but quotas and data-handling rules matter more than the headline dollar value. Avoid sending private records to a third-party service merely because a student tier is available.
Open-source contribution
Git hosting, continuous integration and collaboration tools teach workflows that transfer across employers and platforms. Check whether private-build or team-seat limits fit the project.
Game or 3D project
Unreal Engine was the launch-era choice for game development. Its large downloads, hardware requirements and learning curve make it a poor match for a simple web or scripting assignment.
Payments or email
Stripe and SendGrid address real deployed applications, not every classroom demo. Live payments add compliance and account requirements; a prototype can often use test mode or a mock email service instead.
