Headlines sometimes assign an asteroid a value of trillions—or even quintillions—of dollars by multiplying estimated metal content by prices on Earth. That is not a forecast of wealth: it says nothing about whether the material can be mined, refined, transported or sold without changing the market. The more plausible strategic prize may be water. Used where it is found, water could support crews and spacecraft without first hauling every supply up from Earth. That is a future possibility, not a proven business: as of August 18, 2026, asteroid mining is not an operating commercial industry.
What counts as treasure in space?
“Valuable” depends on where the customer is. A resource’s Earth-market price is only one measure; in space, usefulness at the destination may matter more than resale value back home.

NASA has described water as a potentially important resource for future activity beyond Earth, alongside metals and other materials (NASA’s asteroid-resource overview). For a finance-minded reader, the key distinction is between a material’s notional value and a resource that can actually be delivered to a paying customer at a competitive cost.
Why water could matter more than gold in space
Water can serve several functions that a precious metal cannot. It can be consumed by crews, used in life-support systems, help shield people from radiation, and provide thermal-management capacity. With suitable equipment and energy, it can also be split into hydrogen and oxygen, which are useful propellant components. A supply of water in orbit could, in principle, support fuel depots and reduce the amount of water or propellant that spacecraft must launch from Earth.
The economics are location-dependent. Water is abundant and comparatively inexpensive on Earth, but getting it into orbit requires launching it out of Earth’s gravity well. Water already near a future spacecraft or orbital depot could therefore have greater practical value to that customer. The financial case depends on a complete chain—finding a deposit, extracting and conditioning the water, storing it, and delivering it where it is needed. No commercial asteroid operation has yet proven that chain.
This makes water the stronger strategic-resource case, not a guaranteed investment or a universally more valuable commodity. In-space use may become plausible before returning asteroid metals to Earth, but neither path has established commercial profitability.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft collected material from near-Earth asteroid Bennu in October 2020 and returned it to Earth in September 2023. The returned sample weighed approximately 121.6 grams. Laboratory analyses found carbon-rich material, hydrated minerals, organic molecules, salts and phosphate minerals (NASA’s OSIRIS-REx sample resources; NASA on the phosphate finding and sample).

- 6-STAGE ADVANCED FILTRATION WITH UV LIGHT: The Bluevua RO100ROPOT-UV boasts a superior 6-stage filtration system, featuring a 0.0001μm RO membrane, including UV light and an added remineralization filter. Certified by WQA against NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for lead-free and tested by SGS, this combination effectively reduces TDS, PFOA, PFOS, Chlorine, Fluoride, Arsenic, Lead, and more, while also enriching water with essential minerals, balancing taste and health benefits.
- COUNTERTOP FILTRATION + PREMIUM-QUALITY CARAFE: No plumbing or installation is required for this RO system. Simply plug this portable piece of tech into any power source and you're ready to fill it up and go! Better yet, the water container is constructed of a high borosilicate glass carafe instead of the traditional plastic, reducing the risk of secondary pollution and making this one of the best countertop water filter systems.
- POWER SAVING + WATER SAVING: The water system automatically enters power-saving standby mode when not in use to reduce power consumption. Filters are also designed to help save water with an impressive 2:1 Pure to Drain ratio. Leftover water from a cycle isn't deemed wastewater so more water is saved to use for various household purposes.
- FILTER LIFE MONITOR: The countertop water filters last for a long time between 12-24 months to provide 1-2 years of clean drinking water before needing replacement. Monitor display shows the service life of filters and water quality so you can easily keep track of filter replacement and periodically switch out filter tubes.
- SUSTAINABLE HYDRATION: 1-year limited manufacturer warranty included upon registration. Designed with premium quality components for years of reliable use, our RO system delivers bottled-quality water at home, reducing plastic waste and supporting sustainability efforts with ClimatePartner Certification.
That evidence should not be mistaken for an underground reservoir of liquid water. In Bennu’s material, water is primarily associated with minerals and a history of water-rock alteration; initial spacecraft observations also detected water-bearing minerals (NASA’s account of the early detection). NASA has also reported evaporite minerals formed from salty water and ingredients relevant to the chemistry of life (NASA’s Bennu sample findings).
The sample is scientifically significant, but its small mass cannot establish the exact composition of every part of Bennu, much less other asteroids. Finding water-bearing minerals proves neither that water can be extracted cheaply nor that a deposit is concentrated enough to support a business. Sample return is evidence about composition; it is not a demonstration of mining.
Where metals fit—and why a high price is not a business case
Asteroids may contain iron, nickel, cobalt and platinum-group metals, as well as other materials. NASA’s overview describes S-type asteroids as relatively metal-rich and C-type asteroids as particularly interesting for water and volatile resources. Those broad categories do not by themselves identify an economically recoverable deposit.

The familiar “asteroid treasure” scenario assumes that valuable metals can be brought home and sold. A credible estimate would need to account for prospecting, mission and launch costs, autonomous extraction, ore grade, separation and refining, transport, financing, reentry and recovery. It would also need to model the market: a large new supply could lower the price of the very metal being sold. An element’s presence is not proof of a commercially mineable concentration.
Using metals in space
Iron and nickel could eventually be more useful as local construction material for spacecraft, tanks, shielding or infrastructure than as cargo sent to Earth. Using material at its destination could avoid an expensive return leg and competition with terrestrial producers. But turning asteroid material into reliable structural parts requires mining and manufacturing capabilities that have not been demonstrated as an industrial supply chain.
What Psyche is—and what its headline valuation means
16 Psyche is a large asteroid in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. NASA’s Psyche spacecraft launched on October 13, 2023; the mission overview schedules arrival in July 2029 and the start of its prime science mission in August 2029. Remote observations suggest metal may make up approximately 30% to 60% of Psyche’s volume, but its composition is not confirmed by close-up observations. Scientists have considered whether it could be an exposed planetesimal core, while other explanations remain possible (NASA’s Psyche mission overview).

- [Trusted certifications]: Waterdrop G3P600 reverse osmosis system is certified against NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS reduction and NSF/ANSI 372 certified for lead-free material. Also it has been tested and certified against NSF 42 to reduce chlorine, bad taste and odor. The tankless reverse osmosis system is also certified by the Federal Communications Commission. Besides, it meets the EU Standards and UKCA Standards for safety
- [8-stage filtration]: Tested by official third-party laboratory (SGS), the reverse osmosis system can effectively reduce TDS, chromium, PFAS, radium, fluoride, arsenic salt, iron, calcium, particles, chloride, chlorine and radioactive substances in your tap water. And our RO water filter system can reduce chemicals such as vinyl chloride, ethylhexyl acrylate, isobutylene, ethylene glycol, according to the reverse osmosis membrane technical manual
- [Smart display faucet]: The tankless reverse osmosis system is built with a smart display faucet. For instance, the TDS monitor tells you the quality of your filtered water, while the filter life tracker shows how soon you need to replace your filter
- [High capacity, 2:1 low drain ratio]: As an upgraded reverse osmosis system, this reverse osmosis water system produces 600 gallons of filtered water per day. By its low drain ratio, this system can produce only one cup of waste water for every two cups of pure water produced. Furthermore, with a fast and stable water flow rate, this RO system fills a 8 oz cup of water in 8 seconds, which is ideal for drinking and washing vegetables
- [Tankless design]: Waterdrop G3P600 reverse osmosis system has a stylish look. This tankless design saves 70% under sink space. You can change a filter in 3 seconds without moving the system or using any tools. Note: This reverse osmosis system requires under-sink electricity
Psyche does not have a verified market value of $10 quintillion. Such dramatic figures are hypothetical gross valuations: they apply current Earth commodity prices to estimated quantities of material. They are not measured reserves, recoverable deposits, business valuations, profit forecasts or realistic sale plans. The Congressional Research Service notes that asteroid-resource estimates are highly tentative and do not meet the standards used to establish proven mineral reserves on Earth (CRS, Space Resource Extraction: Overview and Issues for Congress).
NASA’s Psyche mission is a scientific orbiter, not a mining operation. Its purpose is to study the asteroid’s composition, geology and magnetic properties, not to extract metals (NASA’s mission overview; NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Psyche page). Its importance is scientific: close-up data can improve understanding of a poorly characterized world, not confirm a commodity inventory for investors.
What humans have demonstrated—and what remains undone
Robotic missions have shown that spacecraft can observe asteroids, rendezvous with them, map them, interact with weak-gravity surfaces, collect samples and return material to Earth. OSIRIS-REx’s Bennu sample is a landmark example (NASA’s OSIRIS-REx FAQ). These are major engineering achievements, but they are distinct from operating a mine.
Industrial asteroid mining would require a connected system for prospecting, landing or anchoring, excavation, dust and debris control, processing, refining, power supply, storage and transport. It would need to work autonomously or with communication delays, cope with uncertain surface conditions and deliver material reliably to a customer. The financial hurdles include paying for development and operations before revenue, as well as insuring and financing missions under substantial technical and market uncertainty.
- Demonstrated: robotic reconnaissance, sample collection and return, and laboratory analysis of asteroid material.
- Not demonstrated commercially: industrial excavation, profitable water extraction, operational in-space ore refining, or commercial-scale delivery of asteroid metals.
NASA says it is not mining asteroids and that the technologies needed for asteroid mining are not yet sufficiently developed (NASA’s explanation of its asteroid work). Scientific missions should not be presented as evidence that a commercial mining industry already exists.
Which asteroids would make sense to target?
Near-Earth asteroids can be more attractive for early missions than objects in the main belt because travel time and propulsion requirements may be lower. That does not make every near-Earth object a suitable target, or Psyche a likely first commercial mine. A target’s value depends on more than distance.

For water, the decisive question is not simply whether a carbon-rich asteroid contains hydrated minerals; it is whether a useful quantity can be recovered and delivered with less cost and risk than the alternatives. For metals, the equivalent questions concern ore grade, processing, delivery costs and the price effect of new supply.
Is asteroid mining legal?
In the United States, the Space Resource Exploration and Utilization Act of 2015 recognizes that U.S. citizens engaged in commercial recovery of space resources may obtain rights to the resources they recover, subject to applicable law and U.S. international obligations (U.S. Space Resource Exploration and Utilization Act of 2015).
That domestic framework does not settle every international question. The Outer Space Treaty bars national appropriation of celestial bodies, while governments and legal scholars disagree over how that principle applies to private extraction and ownership of recovered resources. The Artemis Accords support resource extraction within the treaty framework, but they are nonbinding bilateral agreements, not a universal mining code. The careful conclusion is that U.S. law provides a framework for recognizing extracted resources, while international interpretation and future regulation remain unsettled (CRS overview of legal and policy issues).

Asteroid resources are a subject for science, policy and long-term technology analysis—not a readily accessible consumer investment category. As of August 2026, there is no straightforward consumer product or service that lets an ordinary reader buy asteroid-mined material or participate directly in a commercial mining operation. NASA’s Psyche mission is scientific, and a private company’s plans should not be confused with an operating mine, a publicly priced service or a guaranteed return.
For a personal-finance decision, a headline valuation is not an investable asset. Any investment claim would need to be assessed on its own terms, including what the company actually does, its funding and risks, and whether it has demonstrated technology or secured customers. The existence of a potentially valuable resource does not establish that a company can extract it profitably.
