The idea was to combine information about soil’s physical, chemical and biological properties; the announcement did not establish that the merger closed or that the combined offering improved farm results.
What the companies announced
The August 28, 2024 announcement described a planned merger—not simply a product partnership or data-sharing arrangement. The proposed combined company would operate as EarthOptics, with EarthOptics CEO Lars Dyrud leading it. Pattern Ag CEO Rob Hranac was quoted in the announcement. Agriculture.com’s report of the announcement does not state a transaction value, ownership split, financing terms, formal closing conditions or legal completion date.

Those distinctions matter: announcing an intention to merge, completing a transaction, integrating operations and combining products are separate steps. The available material does not establish when—or whether—all of those steps occurred, whether Pattern Ag continued as a separate brand, or which products and services were integrated. EarthOptics’ login and contact page shows an operating web presence, but is not evidence of the merger’s legal status.
What each company was expected to bring
EarthOptics: field-based sensing
EarthOptics was described as bringing proprietary field-based soil sensing intended to measure conditions across fields at finer spatial resolution than conventional sampling alone. The announcement does not specify the sensor models, sampling density, required hardware, coverage area or measurement protocols.

Pattern Ag: laboratory analysis and predictive agronomy
Pattern Ag was described as contributing lab-based soil analysis and predictive agronomy, including information about soil biology and agronomic risk such as pests and pathogens, as well as biofertility and other soil attributes. The intended combination was to join spatially distributed field measurements with laboratory characterization and analytics that could help interpret the results.
What a soil “digital twin” means here
The companies used “digital twin” to describe a high-resolution data representation of soil conditions. In practical terms, such a representation could bring together geospatial maps, sensor measurements, laboratory results, biological indicators and model estimates to show how soil may vary across a field and, potentially, over time. The phrase is the companies’ description of the intended offering; it does not prove that the platform creates a complete physical replica or continuously updates every field’s condition.

Users would need to know which values are measured directly, which come from laboratory tests and which are modeled. They should also ask how the service reports uncertainty: a detailed map is not necessarily a precise or accurate one. Sampling design, calibration, soil type, weather, crop system and model validation all affect what a map can reliably say.
What decisions the information might support
The announcement presented the combined data as potentially useful for crop choice and in-season management, and for understanding compaction, nutrients, carbon, moisture, biofertility, pests and pathogens. These are intended uses, not independently demonstrated outcomes. The practical value depends on whether the information is locally reliable and leads to a management action the farm can take.

- Comprehensive Soil Analysis: Liquid soil test kits offer a comprehensive analysis of essential soil parameters, including pH, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Having all these measurements in one kit provides a holistic understanding of the soil's fertility and health.
- Customized Fertilizer Recommendations: With data on pH and nutrient levels, liquid soil test kits help users apply the right type and amount of fertilizers, optimizing plant growth, and preventing over-fertilization, which could harm both plants and the environment. Whether its for lawns, garden, grass, plants, vegetables, turf, flowers, compost trees vines ornamental landscape house plants or hydroponics you will be able to get the results you want.
- Time and Cost-Effective: Liquid soil test kits are relatively quick and easy to use, saving time for gardeners and agricultural professionals. Compared to sending samples to a laboratory, these kits provide rapid results, allowing for prompt action. Additionally, they are cost-effective for routine testing, making it feasible to monitor soil health regularly.
- Optimal Plant Health and Yield: By knowing the soil's pH and nutrient levels, gardeners and farmers can fine-tune their agricultural practices to create an environment conducive to optimal plant growth. Adequate levels of ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for healthy plant development and higher crop yields.
- Accurate and Precise Results: Liquid test kits are designed to provide accurate and precise measurements when used correctly. They are calibrated to detect specific nutrient levels, ensuring reliable data for informed decision-making in plant nutrition and soil management. You get a total of about 140 test. which is 40 test for each parameter and about 20 or so for nitrogen
| Information area | Potential management question |
|---|---|
| Compaction | Where might traffic, tillage, drainage or restricted rooting be limiting crop growth? |
| Nutrients | Where could variable-rate fertility or additional soil sampling be justified? |
| Moisture | Which zones may differ in drainage, drought exposure or water-holding conditions? |
| Pests and pathogens | Where should scouting, rotation planning or targeted intervention receive priority? |
| Biofertility | Where might biological activity or nutrient cycling differ? |
| Carbon | How could soil-carbon information support monitoring or participation in a relevant program? |
Maps and predictive risk scores can help direct attention, but they do not replace field scouting, agronomic judgment, confirmatory soil tests or any legally required product-label decisions. Nor does a map alone supply a prescription: implementation may require compatible equipment, a farm-management system, labor and the ability to change operations by zone.
How to interpret the “100 times or more” claim
Pattern Ag CEO Rob Hranac said the combination could amplify the resolution of most analytics by 100 times or more. That is an attributed company claim, not an independently established performance result. The announcement does not define the baseline or say whether “resolution” means sampling density, map-cell size, number of data points or another measure. It provides no standardized independent benchmark. Greater map resolution should not be read as 100-times-better accuracy, yield or profitability.

What farmers should weigh before buying
The potential upside is a more integrated view of within-field soil variation: physical, chemical and biological information in one analytics workflow may help target sampling, scouting or input decisions. But more data does not guarantee a better decision or a positive return. The service may be a better fit for farms with meaningful variability, a clear decision to make, the equipment or systems to act on zone-level information, and access to local agronomic interpretation. Small or relatively uniform fields, or operations unable to alter inputs or field work by zone, may have less to gain.

Before committing, compare the service with the farm’s current testing and precision-ag workflow. Conventional grid or zone sampling, independent laboratory testing, precision-ag systems and agronomy advice can serve different purposes; integrated analytics need not replace them. EarthOptics’ access page provides a login and contact route rather than public pricing or a self-serve plan comparison. It also says the company does not sell seed, fertilizer or crop-protection products. Check the company’s page for its current contact route and ask for field-specific deliverables and terms.
Questions to ask a provider
- Is the service a one-time mapping project, recurring subscription, per-acre service or bundled agronomy program, and what is included in the fee?
- Which outputs are directly sensed, laboratory-tested or modeled? What is the sampling density and resulting map resolution?
- How are uncertainty and confidence communicated, and what local validation exists for the farm’s soil types and crops?
- Can the farm export raw data, test results, maps and recommendations in standard formats, and who owns each of them?
- Does the service work with existing machinery and farm-management software? Is new hardware, connectivity or agronomic support required?
- What happens to the data and access if the field is resampled or the farm changes providers?
- What management action is expected to change, and can its potential value be weighed against service and implementation costs?
Where the evidence stops
The announcement supplies a strategic rationale, not proof of commercial or agronomic performance. The cited material does not establish the transaction’s financial terms or completion, the combined products and their availability, geographic coverage, customer pricing, data rights, integrations, or independent validation of the resolution claim. The EarthOptics login/contact page confirms an access route, not those details. A farm evaluating a purchase would need current, written answers from the provider and evidence relevant to its own region, crops and intended decisions.
