The call-to-action appeared on nonprofit Pages and linked advertisements, but the original version generally sent donors to the nonprofit’s own website after a Facebook non-endorsement notice. It was primarily a visibility and traffic feature—not the same as Facebook’s later in-platform donation forms and Fundraisers.
What Facebook introduced in August 2015
The August 2015 product gave nonprofit organizations a dedicated Donate Now call to action on their Facebook presence and associated linked ads. Instead of relying only on a website link buried in a post or Page description, a nonprofit could present a more prominent route from Facebook content to its donation page.
Facebook’s announcement covered nonprofit Pages and linked advertisements. The feature was intended to shorten the path between seeing an organization’s message and deciding to give, especially when a nonprofit used a paid campaign to reach supporters. TechCrunch reported the August 24, 2015 rollout.
How the donor experience worked
- A person visited a participating nonprofit’s Facebook Page or saw a linked advertisement.
- They selected Donate Now.
- Facebook displayed a notice explaining that the nonprofit was not endorsed by or affiliated with Facebook.
- After continuing, the person was sent to the nonprofit’s external website.
- The nonprofit’s own donation form and payment process completed the transaction.
That last step is the key limitation. The August version generally did not mean that every donation was processed through a native Facebook checkout. The organization’s website controlled the form, payment options, confirmation, receipt process and follow-up. A broken link, slow page or confusing mobile form could therefore undermine the benefit of the Facebook button.

Why the feature mattered to nonprofits
- Better visibility: A dedicated call to action made giving easier to find than an ordinary text link.
- A direct response option for ads: A nonprofit could connect an awareness or fundraising advertisement to a donation action.
- A clearer handoff: Supporters moved from Facebook to the organization’s own donation environment rather than having to search for it.
The button was an entry point, not a complete fundraising system. The nonprofit still needed an accessible donation page, consistent branding and a process for receipts, donor acknowledgment and measurement. Those are operational best practices, not documented Facebook requirements for the 2015 launch.
How it differed from Facebook’s other Donate products
| Product stage | Where the donation happened | Availability described at the time |
|---|---|---|
| December 2013 Donate test | Inside Facebook, with an amount selector and payment-information form | Selected nonprofit partners |
| August 2015 Donate Now | Generally on the nonprofit’s external website after a Facebook notice | Broader availability for nonprofit Pages and linked advertisements |
| November 2015 Donate and Fundraisers | A one-page, Facebook-based form was described for the test experience | Initially tested with 37 partner organizations |
Facebook’s December 15, 2013 announcement describes the earlier partner test. Its November 18, 2015 announcement describes the later Donate redesign and dedicated Fundraisers. These were successive product stages, not interchangeable names for one feature.

What “available to all nonprofits” did—and did not—mean
Contemporary coverage described Facebook as opening the button to all nonprofits’ Pages and linked advertisements. In practice, an organization still needed an eligible Facebook Page and had to comply with Facebook’s systems and policies. The phrase did not guarantee that every organization in every country saw an identical interface or approval outcome.
Do not apply today’s eligibility rules retroactively to 2015. Current Meta fundraising tools are a separate system with their own enrollment and payout conditions.

What applies to Meta fundraising tools today
Meta’s current Help Center says eligibility depends on the organization’s country or region and other account conditions. The current checklist includes:
- The applicant is a Page administrator.
- The Page has a public address in its About section.
- “Nonprofit Organization” or “Charity Organization” is the first Page category.
- The Page is published, at least two days old and has at least one post.
- The Page has a cover photo and profile picture and follows Meta’s Community Standards.
- The organization is registered with an accepted national registry.
- The organization is located in a supported payout region.
- The nonprofit enrolls with PayPal Giving Fund and matches its profile to its EIN or tax ID.
Meta’s listed payout-available countries include the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, but availability can change by region and product. Check the current eligibility requirements before applying. These present-day rules are not evidence of what Facebook required in August 2015.

Practical checks for a nonprofit using a Facebook donation call to action
- Test the destination: Confirm that the button opens the intended donation URL on desktop and mobile.
- Check the giving form: Make the amount choices, payment instructions and confirmation page understandable.
- Match the identity: Use the same organization name, logo and campaign language on Facebook and the donation site so the disclaimer does not create avoidable confusion.
- Plan the recordkeeping: Decide how receipts, donor acknowledgments, refunds and follow-up will be handled by the organization’s own systems.
- Verify the current platform path: If the button or a modern fundraising tool is missing, review Page category, publication status, administrator access, registry details, country eligibility and PayPal Giving Fund enrollment.
A button can be present while the external donation page is broken or poorly optimized. Conversely, a missing button may reflect eligibility or enrollment rather than a problem with the donation website.
The bottom line for donors and nonprofit teams
The August 2015 Donate Now launch made charitable giving more visible on Facebook, but it usually functioned as a handoff to the nonprofit’s own website. The in-Facebook payment experience belonged to an earlier limited test and to later redesigned tools. Treat the August button, native Donate forms and Fundraisers as different points in Facebook’s evolving fundraising timeline.
