Yes—but “AI-cloned pages” is an incomplete description. xAI launched Grokipedia on October 27, 2025, as an AI-powered alternative to Wikipedia. Early reporting and academic comparisons found that many launch-era entries closely reproduced or adapted Wikipedia content, while other pages were rewritten, shortened, expanded, or given different framing on controversial subjects.
That makes Grokipedia neither a wholly independent encyclopedia nor a proven word-for-word copy of Wikipedia. It is better understood as a corporate, AI-generated reference project that used Wikipedia extensively as source material while changing the editorial process—and, in some cases, the conclusions and emphasis.

What Grokipedia is
Grokipedia is an online encyclopedia operated by xAI, the artificial-intelligence company founded by Elon Musk. Its entries are generated or revised through Grok rather than primarily written and maintained by a large volunteer editor community.

The launch version was described as an early “0.1” release, not a finished replacement for Wikipedia. Coverage from The Associated Press, The Washington Post and The Guardian described it as a direct Wikipedia rival.

Musk presented the project as a “truth-seeking” and less-biased alternative. He has repeatedly criticized Wikipedia as reflecting progressive or “woke” assumptions. The product’s stated premise was that AI could generate, check and revise encyclopedia entries more effectively than conventional community editing.
Those are claims about Grokipedia’s goals and process, not independent findings that it is less biased or more accurate. They should be kept separate from what comparisons of the pages actually found.
Why people called the launch pages “AI-cloned”
Early examinations found several kinds of overlap with Wikipedia:

- Other entries were labelled or described as adapted from Wikipedia.
- Pages often retained Wikipedia-like headings, chronology, organization, references and unusual turns of phrase.
- Some entries added new material or changed only a relatively small portion of the original article.
One reported example involved a Grokipedia page about Canadian singer Feist. The page reportedly reproduced Wikipedia’s content while adding a factual claim about her father’s death. That illustrates the practical risk: an AI system can preserve much of a source’s wording and structure while also inserting a new error, unsupported detail or different interpretation. Al Jazeera and PolitiFact documented examples and questions about the site’s citations.
Musk later described a process in which Grok went through the top one million Wikipedia articles to “add, modify and delete.” That account supports the conclusion that Wikipedia was a major starting point for at least part of the initial corpus. It does not establish that every Grokipedia page was copied identically, or that every sentence was generated independently by AI.

What independent comparisons found
A study published on arXiv compared Grokipedia and Wikipedia using more than exact word matching. It examined similarities in text, structure, citations, organization and semantic content, raising questions about whether an AI encyclopedia can escape the limitations and biases of the material on which it depends.
A second study, “What did Elon change? A comprehensive analysis of Grokipedia,” compared matched articles across subject categories. Similarity varied: ordinary topics could remain highly dependent on Wikipedia, while pages about controversial subjects and elected officials diverged more substantially.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat finding is important. A site may rely heavily on Wikipedia for its basic encyclopedia infrastructure and still materially alter politically sensitive entries. The most revealing question is therefore not simply “Was this copied?” but also:
- What wording was retained?
- What facts or caveats were removed?
- Which sources were added or omitted?
- Did the framing change?
- Were new claims independently supported?
A 2026 study examining ideological neutrality in matched political articles used multiple language models as evaluators. Because its conclusions depend partly on automated judges and represent emerging research, it should be treated as evidence for continued scrutiny—not as a final, universally accepted verdict. See the study on arXiv.
Where Grokipedia changed the framing
Launch coverage identified notable differences in entries involving Musk, transgender issues and gender, race-related claims, Donald Trump, Christopher Columbus, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, apartheid and other contested political or historical subjects. Reports from The Atlantic, TIME and ABC News described differences in wording and emphasis.

It would be too broad to conclude that every Grokipedia article reflects a single political ideology. The more defensible conclusion is that the platform showed politically meaningful departures from Wikipedia on some controversial topics, while also retaining extensive Wikipedia-derived material.
This shifts rather than eliminates the bias question. Wikipedia’s disputes are handled through a distributed system of volunteer editors, article discussions, policies and revision histories. Grokipedia places more editorial power in xAI, Grok’s training and instructions, and the people who operate the service. Bias can therefore enter through source selection, prompts, model behavior, moderation, revision decisions or the priorities of the company controlling the system.
Wikipedia and Grokipedia are governed differently
| Issue | Wikipedia | Grokipedia |
|---|---|---|
| Authorship | Volunteer human editors collaborate on articles. | Content is generated or revised through an AI system operated by xAI. |
| Editing | Readers can generally edit pages directly, subject to policies and protections. | Readers may suggest corrections or new pages, which are reviewed by Grok rather than directly incorporated by a comparable open editing process. |
| Neutrality | Uses a documented neutral-point-of-view policy and emphasizes reliable sourcing. | Uses xAI’s AI-generated and “fact-checked” approach, whose effectiveness remains an empirical question. |
| Correction trail | Revision histories and talk pages provide a visible record of changes and disputes. | The transparency and granularity of its revision process are different and more concentrated in the platform operator. |
| Accountability | Governance is distributed among the editing community, administrators and Wikimedia Foundation infrastructure. | Responsibility is concentrated in xAI, its model, policies and operators. |
| Source relationship | Articles may incorporate freely licensed material with attribution and must follow applicable reuse terms. | Some material may be identified as subject to CC BY-SA, while other material is governed by xAI’s license terms. |
| Funding and incentives | Wikimedia says Wikipedia does not run advertising and is primarily donation-supported. | Grokipedia sits within xAI’s commercial AI ecosystem. |
Wikimedia Foundation’s overview of Wikipedia explains its volunteer-editing, neutrality and sourcing model. The contrast is not that one system is automatically correct and the other automatically wrong. It is that readers have different ways to see, challenge and correct errors.
Did Grokipedia’s use of Wikipedia violate copyright?
Similarity alone does not settle that question. Wikipedia’s article text is generally available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license, subject to attribution and share-alike requirements. That license can permit copying and adaptation when its conditions are followed.
Potential legal and licensing questions include:
- Whether Wikipedia and contributing authors were properly attributed.
- Whether required license information was provided.
- Whether adapted material was distributed under compatible share-alike terms.
- Whether images, videos, quotations, databases or other third-party material had separate rights conditions.
- Whether particular passages copied protected expression rather than merely repeating uncopyrightable facts.
xAI’s current terms of service say Grokipedia material is generally subject to the xAI Community License Agreement, while some content may also be subject to CC BY-SA 4.0. That means readers, researchers and publishers should check the licensing information for the exact page they intend to reuse. It is not safe to assume that every Grokipedia entry has Wikipedia’s licensing terms.

Whether the service complied with all applicable obligations is a factual and legal issue. It should not be described as established copyright infringement without a relevant legal ruling, filing or authoritative legal analysis.
Can “fact-checked by Grok” be trusted?
Not as a substitute for independent verification. If Grok generates an entry and then checks it, the same model ecosystem is involved in both stages. That is not equivalent to an independent human fact-checker with separate sources, incentives and editorial responsibility.
The main reliability risks are:
- Unsupported details: AI prose can sound authoritative while adding hallucinated names, dates or events.
- Weak citation matching: A page may include references that do not support every claim made in the text.
- Selective sourcing: The system may favor official, partisan, low-quality or context-poor sources.
- Silent revision: If readers cannot easily identify what changed and when, errors are harder to audit.
- Bias relocation: Model training data, prompts, policies and corporate control can influence framing even when a system is designed to reduce bias.
- Controversial-topic instability: Politics, war, identity, medicine, law and disputed history require more scrutiny than routine background information.
- Error propagation: Incorrect AI-generated material can be copied into search results, chatbots or later reference works.
xAI’s own terms warn that service output may be inaccurate, incomplete or offensive and place responsibility on users to evaluate it, including through human review. That warning applies directly to using Grokipedia as a reference source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test whether a page was copied
A single example cannot establish how an entire encyclopedia was produced. For a meaningful check, compare several pages from different categories:
- Select a noncontroversial biography, a scientific topic, a political figure, a disputed historical event, and a page about Musk or xAI.
- Compare the opening paragraphs, section headings, chronology, unusual wording and overall article structure.
- Look for a disclosure that the page was sourced from or adapted from Wikipedia.
- Follow individual citations to the underlying sources. Check whether they actually support the claims.
- Compare contested statements with primary documents, official records or reputable scholarship.
- Note omissions, newly added claims, changes in emphasis and politically loaded wording.
- Record the access date. AI-edited pages may change, so another reader may not see the same version.
This method distinguishes exact copying from structural borrowing, ordinary summarization, factual updating and ideological rewriting. It also tests whether a page is useful on its own rather than merely familiar because it resembles Wikipedia.
Best Value
Should you use Grokipedia instead of Wikipedia?
Grokipedia is best treated as a lead generator, not a sole authority. It may help identify names, topics or possible sources, but readers should verify important claims elsewhere.
Before relying on an entry, ask:
- Are the citations current, reputable and correctly matched to the claims?
- Can you see what changed and who or what made the change?
- Can qualified people directly correct errors?
- Is the topic high stakes, politically contested or connected to Musk, xAI or X?
- Is the article genuinely independent, or mainly a transformed version of Wikipedia?
- What license applies to the page if you plan to reuse its text?
- Do primary sources and specialist references support the article’s account?
For medical, legal, financial, scientific or political decisions, use official records, primary documentation, specialist references and expert-reviewed publications. Wikipedia also requires checking; its human editing model is not a guarantee of accuracy. But its visible policies, discussion pages and revision histories give readers a more transparent correction trail than an AI system whose output may change without equivalent context.
The bottom line on the “AI-cloned” claim
Grokipedia did launch as an AI-generated Wikipedia rival, and evidence from reporting and research supports the claim that many early pages closely copied or adapted Wikipedia. The stronger claim—that every page was a literal clone—is not established.
