Overview

Keeper combines bookkeeping with federal and state tax filing. It scans linked financial account transactions for potential deductions, then lets users review them, add receipt photos and create rules. Keeper also prepares returns, with every filed return reviewed and signed by a tax professional.

The service connects to accounts through Plaid. Keeper says it cannot access users’ bank login information and uses banking-grade encryption to protect personal information. It also offers a 24/7 AI tax assistant and says its human tax support team can provide personalized help.

Keeper has a free plan and a 14-day trial, alongside paid plans for deduction tracking, tax filing and bookkeeping. The trial does not include exporting deductions or submitting a return for IRS filing.

Key features

Expense tracking and deduction discovery

The Only deductions plan includes expense discovery and tracking, a tax deduction summary export and access to the AI tax assistant. The Bookkeeping Only plan includes expense tracking and AI deduction discovery and categorization, but does not include tax filing.

Keeper supports federal and state returns. Standard includes federal filing and up to two state returns; Premium and Business cover three or more states. Every return filed through Keeper is reviewed and signed by a tax professional. Premium adds one-on-one tax pro consultations, quarterly tax support and one amendment. Business includes S-Corp and partnership filing, quarterly Form 941 support, and a year-end book review and close.

AI assistance

The 24/7 AI tax assistant is included in the Only deductions plan and higher tiers. Keeper also says its human tax support team is available for personalized help; Premium specifies one-on-one consultations with a tax professional.

Who it's for

Keeper describes its plans for individual contractors, sole proprietors, people with complex individual tax situations, S-Corps and partnerships. Standard covers federal returns and up to two states, while Premium and Business cover three or more states. The Bookkeeping Only plan may suit people who want expense tracking without tax filing; those who need a return prepared should look at a filing plan instead.

Pros and cons

Pros: Combines bookkeeping and tax filing; identifies potential deductions from linked transactions; filed returns receive professional review and signature; offers AI and human tax support.
Cons: Bookkeeping Only excludes tax filing; the 14-day trial excludes deduction exports and IRS return submission; Standard is limited to two state returns, while three or more states require Premium or Business.

Verdict

Keeper brings deduction discovery, bookkeeping and tax filing together, with professional review and signature for every filed return. Its plans separate tax filing from bookkeeping-only tools, and the state-return limit matters: Standard covers up to two states, while Premium and Business cover three or more. Compare those limits and the included support against your filing needs, and note that the trial does not allow a return to be submitted for IRS filing.
