Comcast Is Still Losing Internet Customers. Why Its Five-Year Price Guarantee Hasn’t Fixed the Problem

Comcast is still losing domestic broadband customers despite introducing five-year price guarantees, unlimited data and included gateway equipment. It lost 181,000 broadband customers in the fourth quarter of 2025 and another 65,000 in the first quarter of 2026. The improvement matters—but it is not a turnaround.

The evidence points to a partial success: Comcast’s new offers appear to be slowing losses, while fiber, fixed wireless, service concerns, local pricing and broader distrust of promotional billing continue to make it difficult to retain every internet customer.

The customer-loss numbers tell two stories

Comcast’s latest reported figures show both continued pressure and meaningful improvement. The company reported:

Period Domestic broadband result What it shows
Q4 2025 Lost 181,000 customers Competitive pressure outweighed the early benefit of the new offers.
Q1 2026 Lost 65,000 customers Losses narrowed substantially from the same quarter a year earlier.
Q1 2026 28.654 million broadband customers Comcast’s reported domestic residential broadband base.
Q1 2026 Added 435,000 wireless lines Strong mobile growth, helped by free-line promotions.

In its first-quarter filing, Comcast said the 65,000 broadband losses compared with 183,000 losses in the first quarter of 2025. It also reported 9.739 million domestic wireless lines. Comcast’s Q1 2026 operating statistics distinguish these metrics clearly.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

That distinction is important. Broadband subscribers, wireless lines, video customers and total residential customer relationships are not interchangeable. Comcast’s broader Connectivity & Platforms residential-relationship count increased by 10,000 in Q1 2026 even while domestic broadband customers declined by 65,000. Wireless and international relationships affect the broader figure.

Comcast also lost 322,000 domestic video customers in the quarter. That does not mean it lost 322,000 internet customers, just as wireless additions do not prove that broadband retention improved by the same amount.

The latest figures cited in this article are from Q1 2026, reported April 23, 2026. They should not be read as full-year 2026 results.

What Comcast changed in 2025

Comcast’s traditional cable-internet model often combined promotional pricing with separate charges, data-policy choices and equipment costs. In 2025, the company began moving toward simpler, more predictable offers.

Five-year price guarantee

On April 15, 2025, Comcast announced a five-year Xfinity Internet price guarantee. The launch announcement said eligible new customers could receive plans starting at $55 per month, with unlimited data and an Xfinity gateway included. It also said the plans did not require an annual contract. Those launch details were specific to the April 2025 announcement; the $55 figure should not be treated as a universal August 2026 price.

Everyday pricing

On June 26, 2025, Comcast announced four national internet tiers under an everyday-pricing structure. The company said the packages included unlimited data and an Xfinity WiFi Gateway. Availability and offer terms still depend on the customer’s market and eligibility.

Included mobile service

Qualifying home-internet offers also included a year of Xfinity Mobile service. That gives Comcast a second way to compete for a household’s communications spending: even if broadband pricing alone is not enough, a combined internet-and-mobile offer may appear more valuable.

Are the new plans failing?

No—but they have not solved the broadband problem.

Comcast said lower voluntary churn and strong adoption of the five-year guarantee were helping. In Q1 2026, the company estimated that its advertised offers accounted for more than half of the year-over-year improvement in subscriber losses. Broadband losses were therefore materially better than a year earlier.

At the same time, Comcast still lost 65,000 domestic broadband customers in Q1 and 181,000 in Q4 2025. In its Q4 earnings discussion, the company said competitive intensity more than offset the early traction from its new initiatives. Its executives also described a costly transition involving lower everyday prices, free wireless lines, increased marketing and customer-service spending, and migration to new packages. The Q4 2025 earnings transcript provides Comcast’s explanation.

The fairest description is partial success, not a completed turnaround. Comcast appears to be reducing the pace of losses, but the offers have not yet made the company immune to local competition or customer dissatisfaction.

Why unlimited data and price certainty are not enough

Customers do not buy a data cap in isolation. They buy a bundle of network performance, reliability, support, price, flexibility and trust.

Fiber may offer a better performance profile

Where fiber is available, customers may receive faster upload speeds, lower latency and more symmetrical service than a cable connection. Those advantages matter to remote workers, cloud-backup users, creators, gamers and households making frequent video calls.

A guaranteed cable price can still be attractive when it is the only practical wired option. But a five-year guarantee is less persuasive if a local fiber provider offers similar total pricing with better upload performance.

Fixed wireless creates a simpler alternative

5G home-internet services from providers such as T-Mobile and Verizon can offer easier installation, flexible terms and competitive pricing. Performance varies with signal strength, tower capacity, congestion and address eligibility, so fixed wireless is not automatically better. It is nevertheless another substitute that did not have the same reach or relevance when cable faced fewer alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comcast has specifically identified fixed wireless and other providers as sources of competitive pressure. Its public results do not establish what percentage of Comcast’s losses went to fiber versus fixed wireless.

Local pricing matters more than a national headline

A five-year guarantee is valuable only if the guaranteed base price is competitive at the customer’s address. A household should compare the complete monthly bill—not just the advertised internet rate—including taxes, fees, equipment, installation, activation and optional services.

Customers may still question the service experience

Unlimited data does not fix an outage, a delayed repair, an installation problem, a billing dispute or a frustrating support interaction. Comcast is spending more on customer-experience initiatives, according to its executives, but national subscriber figures do not prove which of these issues is decisive for a particular customer.

It is reasonable to view service quality, billing trust and support as possible contributors. It is not accurate to claim that the cited loss figures alone prove Comcast is losing customers because of poor service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download speed is only part of the product

Consumers often compare the largest download number on each provider’s website. Upload speed, latency, congestion and outage history can be more important for some households. A plan with unlimited data but weak upload performance may not be the best choice for a remote worker or frequent large-file uploader.

What the five-year guarantee does—and does not—guarantee

The word “guarantee” should not automatically be read as “the entire bill can never change.” Before accepting an offer, confirm the terms that apply to the specific account and address.

  • Does the guarantee cover only the base internet service price, or the complete bill?
  • Can taxes and government fees change?
  • Are gateway equipment, premium support and add-ons included?
  • Must the customer keep a particular speed tier?
  • Does moving to a new address preserve eligibility?
  • Does changing the account holder, speed or equipment end the guarantee?
  • Is the offer available to existing customers, or only to new customers and selected markets?
  • Does the included Xfinity Mobile line automatically become paid after one year?
  • What happens after the five-year period?

Comcast’s launch announcement supports the claims that eligible plans included unlimited data and that customers could cancel without an annual-contract penalty. It does not, by itself, establish every exception that could appear in an individual offer. Customers should read the applicable offer terms rather than relying on the headline.

The free-mobile strategy is a retention bet

Xfinity Mobile helps Comcast compete for more of a household’s total communications budget. The company reported 435,000 wireless-line additions in Q1 2026 and said nearly half of residential postpaid phone connections involved a free line. Comcast expected most of those free lines to convert into paid relationships after the initial promotional period. That expectation is a company projection, not a completed result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strategy has two potential benefits. First, the mobile offer can make Comcast broadband harder to replace because a customer is considering the combined household bill. Second, customers who keep the service after the free period could create additional recurring revenue.

But wireless growth is not the same as broadband retention. A customer may claim a free mobile line while keeping broadband for reasons unrelated to the promotion. The offer may also attract people who would have purchased Comcast internet anyway. And the eventual mobile bill can create dissatisfaction if customers do not understand the post-promotion price, device conditions, taxes or coverage limitations.

Why national losses do not describe every neighborhood

Comcast’s national results cannot show whether losses are concentrated in areas newly reached by fiber, markets with strong fixed-wireless coverage, households whose promotional rates expired or customers experiencing local service problems. Availability is highly address-specific.

Before switching—or deciding to stay—compare these items at the exact service address:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Total monthly cost: Include taxes, fees, equipment and installation.
  2. Post-promotion price: Identify what the bill becomes after every free or discounted period.
  3. Upload speed: Especially important for remote work, video calls and cloud services.
  4. Latency and congestion: Important for gaming, calls and interactive applications.
  5. Data policy: Confirm whether unlimited data is included or costs extra.
  6. Equipment: Check gateway charges, required devices and return obligations.
  7. Contract terms: Verify cancellation fees and whether the price guarantee survives a move.
  8. Mobile conditions: Review coverage, device requirements and the bill after the free period.
  9. Local reliability: Ask neighbors or consult credible local outage information.

Who may benefit from Comcast’s new structure?

The new plans may be especially useful for heavy-data households, large families, cord-cutters and customers who value a predictable base internet price. They may also appeal to people for whom Comcast is the only wired provider or who already want to combine home internet with Xfinity Mobile.

Best Value
TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Unlimited data matters less to a light user who rarely streams, backs up files or connects multiple devices. That customer may save more with a lower-cost plan, if one is available, than with a package whose main advantage is unlimited usage.

Who should compare alternatives first?

Customers should give local fiber a close look if it is available, particularly when upload speed and latency matter. People with repeated outages, unresolved support issues or billing disputes should compare providers rather than assuming a price guarantee solves the underlying problem.

Renters and customers planning to move soon should also check whether the guarantee transfers cleanly to a new address. Anyone who does not want mobile service should compare the broadband-only total price instead of assigning value to a free line they may never use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Potential alternatives include Verizon home internet, which may mean fiber or 5G Home depending on the address; T-Mobile Home Internet; and Google Fiber where available. Their availability and current prices must be checked directly rather than assumed from a national advertisement.

Bottom line

Comcast has responded to two major broadband complaints—unexpected price changes and data limits—but customers are evaluating more than those two features. The company’s losses narrowed from 183,000 in Q1 2025 to 65,000 in Q1 2026, and Comcast says its new offers drove more than half of that improvement. That is evidence the strategy is having an effect.

It is not evidence that the problem is over. Comcast still faces fiber and fixed-wireless competition, local differences in price and performance, service concerns and skepticism about promotional terms. The five-year guarantee may be a strong choice in one ZIP code and poor value in another. The correct comparison is the complete address-specific bill and service experience—not the guarantee, unlimited data or a free mobile line viewed in isolation.
