Boost Mobile advertised up to $1,000 off the iPhone 16 lineup without a trade-in, but required its $65-per-month Infinite Access for iPhone plan. These were historical launch promotions—not offers readers should assume are still available in 2026.
Apple began iPhone 16 preorders on September 13, 2024, with store availability starting September 20. Apple’s own launch announcement listed up to $1,000 in carrier credits, while Apple’s standard trade-in offer reached up to $650 for eligible iPhones. Apple’s launch announcement made clear that the larger amount came through participating carrier promotions.

Quick comparison of the September 2024 offers
| Provider | Maximum advertised value | iPhone 16 Pro Max? | Trade-in | Credit period or structure | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T | Up to $1,000 off | Yes, explicitly | Required for the top tier; minimum $180 trade-in value | Up to 36 monthly bill credits | Existing or new AT&T customers with a qualifying plan |
| T-Mobile | Up to $1,000 off | Yes, in the archived terms | Required | 24 monthly bill credits | Customers already on, or willing to move to, Go5G Next |
| Boost Mobile | Up to $1,000 off | Yes, as part of the iPhone 16 lineup | No trade-in required according to the launch release | Infinite Access for iPhone at $65 per month | Buyers without a qualifying trade-in |
| Apple | Up to $650 standard Apple trade-in credit; carrier promotions could reach $1,000 | Carrier-dependent | Optional Apple Trade In or carrier trade-in | Apple Card Monthly Installments at 0% APR; carrier terms vary | Buyers who prefer Apple’s retail and financing experience |
| Verizon | Up to $1,000 verified for a business offer | Consumer Pro Max terms not fully verified in the available source | Required for the cited business offer | Terms depend on the offer | Eligible business customers only, based on the cited source |
The headline amounts were not instant discounts in the ordinary sense. They generally represented a combination of trade-in value and future monthly bill credits, subject to financing, plan, line, and account requirements.
What “up to $1,000 off” actually meant
A $1,000 promotion did not normally reduce the checkout price by $1,000. Depending on the carrier, it could include:
#1 Best Overall
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
- An instant trade-in credit applied when the old phone was accepted.
- Promotional credits spread across 24 or 36 monthly bills.
- A maximum available only for particular trade-in models and conditions.
- A credit limited to the remaining financed balance of the new phone.
- A benefit available only on a premium unlimited plan.
Customers could still owe sales tax, activation or upgrade fees, the portion of the device price not covered by credits, and any required down payment. A carrier-financed phone also remained subject to that carrier’s device-lock and unlocking rules; ordering it through Apple did not automatically make it unlocked.
AT&T: the strongest explicitly documented Pro Max offer
AT&T advertised up to $1,000 off the iPhone 16 Pro Max with an eligible trade-in. Its launch announcement said the offer was available to both new and existing customers. The detailed AT&T offer page stated that reaching the maximum required a trade-in valued at least $180.
The maximum discount was delivered through 36 monthly bill credits, alongside an AT&T installment plan and qualifying postpaid service. That made the offer potentially attractive for someone already satisfied with AT&T, but less compelling for a switcher who would pay substantially more for the required plan.
AT&T also publicized a separate iPhone 16 Pro Max “on us” opportunity for certain new AT&T Fiber customers, with the launch announcement stating that the offer ended October 10, 2024. That deadline confirms why the promotion should be treated as a historical preorder-period deal rather than a current offer.
AT&T’s main trade-off: the headline discount was clear and explicitly covered the Pro Max, but the 36-month credit period created a long commitment. Leaving AT&T or changing to an ineligible plan could cause the remaining credits to stop.

T-Mobile: up to $1,000 with Go5G Next
T-Mobile’s archived 2024 terms listed an iPhone 16 promotion worth up to $1,000, explicitly including the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The qualifying route required an eligible trade-in and the Go5G Next plan. The discount combined an Apple instant trade-in credit with T-Mobile promotional credits over 24 months.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe shorter credit period was a meaningful advantage over AT&T’s documented 36 months. However, Go5G Next was a premium plan, so a customer switching solely for the phone discount needed to compare the plan’s extra cost over two years.
T-Mobile’s archived terms also stated that:
- The promotional credits could not exceed the device cost.
- Taxes were due on the phone’s pre-credit price.
- The qualifying line had to remain active and in good standing.
- Credits could stop if the device was paid off early or service was canceled.
- It could take up to two billing cycles after valid trade-in submission and validation for credits to appear.
That last point matters when reviewing the first bill. The absence of a credit on the first invoice did not necessarily mean the promotion had failed, but customers should monitor subsequent bills and contact T-Mobile if the credits do not appear as promised. The original terms are archived at T-Mobile’s 2024 promotional-offers page.
Boost Mobile: the no-trade-in alternative
Boost Mobile’s launch announcement stood out because it advertised up to $1,000 off the iPhone 16 lineup, including the Pro Max, without requiring a trade-in. The offer used Infinite Access for iPhone at $65 per month. Boost also said both new and current customers could sign up for Infinite Access.
This made Boost the clearest option for someone with no valuable phone to trade in. But “no trade-in” did not mean “no commitment.” The required monthly service arrangement was part of the offer, and the press release was not a substitute for the full financing, upgrade, device-lock, coverage, roaming, and data-priority terms.
Boost’s announcement also described one year of free service for certain customers who bought an iPhone 16 outright under the specified offer. That was a separate purchase route and should not be confused with the $65-per-month Infinite Access promotion. Review the original Boost announcement and current plan terms before relying on any similar promotion.

- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
- Titanium frame and reinforced edges provide a premium, durable build, reducing weight compared to stainless steel while enhancing grip and making the phone easier to handle during long sessions of video recording, gaming, or editing.
- Camera system designed for versatility and precision, including ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto lenses with improved low-light and macro capabilities, giving photographers and creators a broader range of expressive tools while maintaining sharp details across the frame.
- Advanced Action button offers customizable shortcuts, allowing quick access to features like capturing photos, launching apps, controlling accessibility tools, or activating automation tasks without interrupting your workflow.
- Audio and video performance optimized for creators, with spatial audio, improved microphones, and stabilized video recording, providing professional-quality sound and smooth footage whether recording content, streaming, or joining video calls.
Boost’s main trade-off: it avoided the trade-in hurdle, but the customer accepted a specific Boost service and upgrade structure. It was not automatically the cheapest option for someone who already had a low-cost wireless plan.
Buying through Apple: what changed and what did not
Apple accepted iPhone 16 preorders through Apple.com and the Apple Store app. Buyers could choose Apple Trade In, receive an Apple Gift Card where applicable, use Apple Card Monthly Installments advertised at 0% APR and 3% Daily Cash, or activate service with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or Boost Mobile.
Buying through Apple did not necessarily mean avoiding carrier conditions. If the buyer selected a carrier promotion at Apple checkout, the carrier’s trade-in, plan, financing, credit-period, cancellation, and device-lock rules still applied. Apple’s standard trade-in value was separate from the larger carrier promotion; a customer should not add both full values together unless the transaction explicitly permits it.

What could be verified about Verizon
The available primary Verizon source verifies an offer of up to $1,000 off a new iPhone 16 for business customers who traded in an old phone and signed up for Business Unlimited Pro. It does not fully establish the consumer iPhone 16 Pro Max preorder terms.

For that reason, Verizon should not be presented as having a confirmed consumer Pro Max offer based on that source alone. The cited business announcement is available in Verizon’s September 2024 material.

Which deal was best for each type of buyer?
For the largest documented Pro Max discount
AT&T and T-Mobile were the strongest documented choices. AT&T explicitly advertised up to $1,000 off the Pro Max and used 36 monthly credits. T-Mobile explicitly included the Pro Max in its $1,000 promotion and used 24 monthly credits. The better choice depended on the buyer’s existing plan, trade-in value, and willingness to remain with the carrier.
For an existing AT&T customer
AT&T was potentially the simplest route if the customer already had eligible postpaid service and a qualifying trade-in. The customer avoided switching costs, but should still confirm that the existing plan qualified and understand the 36-month credit schedule.
For an existing T-Mobile customer
T-Mobile could make sense if the customer already had Go5G Next or could move to it without materially increasing the household’s wireless bill. Its 24-month credit period was shorter, but paying off the phone or canceling service early could end the remaining credits.
For a switcher
Do not choose solely by the $1,000 number. Add the required premium-plan cost, activation fees, taxes, and switching costs over the full credit period. A smaller phone credit on a cheaper plan can produce a lower total cost.
For someone without a trade-in
Boost was the clearest historical no-trade-in option because its launch release tied the $1,000 offer to Infinite Access rather than an old phone. Compare the $65 monthly service commitment with the cost of buying the phone separately and keeping an existing plan.
Best Value
- The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
- Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
- Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
- Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
- Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
For someone wanting a shorter commitment
T-Mobile’s documented 24-month credit schedule was shorter than AT&T’s 36-month schedule. That did not eliminate the consequences of cancellation or early payoff, but it reduced the period over which the promotional credits were scheduled.
For someone wanting an unlocked phone
Examine Apple’s unlocked purchase path or an outright-purchase option carefully. Do not assume that a phone financed through a carrier becomes unlocked because the order was placed on Apple.com. Confirm the applicable carrier unlocking policy before purchasing.
How to calculate the real cost
Use this framework instead of comparing headline discounts:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Total cost = device payments after credits
+ required wireless-plan cost
+ taxes and activation or upgrade fees
+ trade-in opportunity cost
+ switching costs
+ remaining-balance risk
For example, a $1,000 credit can be outweighed by moving from a $50 monthly plan to a $90 qualifying plan. Over 24 months, the extra service cost alone would be $960, before taxes and fees. The exact result depends on the plans being compared, but the principle is consistent: the phone promotion and the wireless plan are one economic decision.
Trade-in and billing checklist
- Confirm whether the promotion covers the Pro Max, not just the standard iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro.
- Check the required trade-in model, condition, storage capacity, and minimum value.
- Determine whether the offer is for an upgrade, a new line, a new customer, or an eligible existing customer.
- Confirm the exact qualifying plan and whether changing plans can end the credits.
- Write down whether credits last 24 or 36 months.
- Ask what happens to the unpaid device balance if you cancel or switch carriers.
- Confirm whether taxes and fees are calculated on the pre-credit phone price.
- Photograph the phone, record its IMEI or serial number, and save the promised trade-in value before shipping.
- Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number.
- Check the first two or three bills for the expected credits and contact the carrier promptly if they are missing.
Why “free iPhone” headlines can mislead
A phone advertised as “free” usually means the carrier expects monthly promotional credits to offset the financed device payments. It does not necessarily mean zero dollars at checkout, zero service cost, or the ability to leave at any time without consequences.
Paying off the phone early can terminate the credits under the documented T-Mobile terms. Canceling service can also stop future credits while leaving the remaining device balance due. Comparable conditions may apply to other promotions, but the customer should rely on the specific carrier’s written terms rather than assume every offer works identically.
Final verdict
The best historical iPhone 16 Pro Max preorder deal depended on the buyer’s situation. AT&T and T-Mobile offered the clearest $1,000 Pro Max trade-in promotions; T-Mobile’s 24-month schedule was shorter, while AT&T’s offer explicitly covered new and existing customers and used 36 monthly credits. Boost was the standout for avoiding a trade-in, but its $65-per-month Infinite Access plan was part of the price. Apple was the cleanest retail and financing route, not automatically the cheapest.
