T-Mobile’s five-year price guarantee does not freeze your total wireless bill. It covers the price of “talk, text, and 5G smartphone data” on eligible Experience plans, while taxes, surcharges, carrier-imposed fees, device payments, add-ons, and other charges remain outside the promise.
That makes the guarantee a narrow base-price protection—not a five-year cap on what you will actually pay each month.

What T-Mobile actually guarantees
T-Mobile announced its Experience More and Experience Beyond plans on April 22, 2025; the plans became available April 23. The company says eligible customers receive a price guarantee lasting at least five years from signup or activation.
The protected service is specifically the price of:

T-Mobile’s announcement does not promise that every line on your bill will remain unchanged. The relevant distinction is simple: the base service price may be locked, but the final bill is not necessarily locked. T-Mobile’s announcement and its guarantee disclosure identify taxes and fees as exclusions.
What is outside the price lock?
Depending on the plan and applicable terms, the exclusions include:
- Government taxes and surcharges
- T-Mobile fees and recovery charges
- Add-on features
- Extra devices and device-related charges
- Per-use charges
- Third-party services
- Promotional credits that expire or have conditions
- Changes caused by adding lines or switching plans
- Some network-management practices
Ars Technica reported that T-Mobile’s price-lock terms exclude “add-on features, taxes, surcharges, fees, or charges for extra Features or Devices.” More detailed Metro wording cited in that report also excludes per-use charges, third-party services, and network-management practices. The precise language can vary by brand and plan, so customers should check the terms attached to their account.

The fee that weakens the guarantee
T-Mobile’s current plan-page disclosure lists a Regulatory Programs Fee and Telco Recovery Fee totaling $4.49 per month per voice line and $2.10 per month per mobile-internet line, plus applicable tax. T-Mobile says these charges are not government-required taxes or charges and are subject to change without notice. See the current T-Mobile plan disclosure.
That wording matters. A government tax may change because of legislation or local policy. The RPF/TRF is a carrier-disclosed charge that T-Mobile describes as changeable. In practical terms, T-Mobile could leave the protected plan price untouched while increasing an excluded fee that still appears on your bill.

| Charge | Disclosed amount | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Voice-line RPF/TRF | $4.49 per month | Per line, plus tax; subject to change without notice |
| Mobile-internet-line RPF/TRF | $2.10 per month | Per line, plus tax; subject to change without notice |
These are illustrations based on the current disclosure, not a prediction that T-Mobile will raise the fees. Four voice lines would produce $17.96 per month in that fee category at the disclosed rate. A $10 increase in a per-line fee across four lines would add $40 per month even if the protected base plan rate stayed the same.
T-Mobile’s service-agreement materials show different fee amounts in another context—$3.18 for voice lines and $1.16 for mobile-internet lines on non-tax-inclusive rate plans. That difference may reflect a separate plan category, agreement, enrollment path, or update cycle. Do not assume one figure applies universally; check the exact documents for your plan.
Why “price lock” can be misleading
Most customers care about the amount withdrawn from their bank account, not whether one particular line item technically changed. A useful invoice-level question is:
Which exact line items cannot increase?
Under T-Mobile’s wording, the answer is the eligible base price for included talk, text, and smartphone data. It is not necessarily the total recurring amount after taxes, fees, financing, insurance, add-ons, and credits.
The difference becomes more important for families. Excluded charges can apply per line, while taxes vary by location. A multi-line customer may therefore have considerably more bill exposure than a single-line customer.

Launch pricing versus today’s bill
Ars Technica reported launch-era pricing of $85 per month for one line of Experience More and $100 for Experience Beyond after the AutoPay discount. Those were April 2025 figures and should not be treated as current prices without checking T-Mobile’s current checkout or plan page.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe advertised amount may also depend on maintaining an eligible debit card or bank account for AutoPay. A lost AutoPay discount, an expired promotional credit, a device installment, or a new add-on can increase the amount paid without changing the underlying guaranteed service rate.
Does the guarantee apply to existing customers?
Not automatically. The guarantee applies to customers on eligible Experience plans and generally begins when the customer signs up for or activates the eligible plan. Existing customers should confirm:
- Whether their current plan is eligible.
- The date the guarantee began.
- Whether adding a line creates a new price-lock period or simply adds a separately priced line.
- Whether changing plans ends the existing guarantee.
- Whether promotional credits are conditional or protected.
- Whether device payments, insurance, and bundled services are separate.
Metro-specific wording reported by Ars says the guarantee starts upon activation or switching to an eligible plan and does not restart when a customer adds a line or changes plans. That language should not automatically be applied to every T-Mobile account. Obtain the terms displayed in your account, order confirmation, or plan agreement.
What happened with T-Mobile’s earlier price locks?
T-Mobile previously marketed broad price-protection promises, including its 2015 “Un-contract” and a 2017 lifetime price promise for T-Mobile One customers. Customers later disputed price increases affecting plans they believed were protected.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Ars Technica reported complaints to the FCC and FTC and a class-action lawsuit related to those disputes. The safe conclusion is that T-Mobile’s earlier promises became the subject of customer and consumer-advocate allegations—not that a court has necessarily made a definitive finding that every earlier promise was violated.
That history does not prove the current five-year guarantee is invalid. It does mean customers should rely on the detailed written terms, not only the headline phrase “price guarantee.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the guarantee meaningless?
Not literally. It could provide useful protection if T-Mobile attempted to raise the stated base price of included talk, text, and data during the guaranteed period.
But it is materially weaker than an all-in bill guarantee. The protection is less valuable when a large share of the bill consists of taxes, per-line fees, device payments, add-ons, or promotional credits. The RPF/TRF disclosure is especially important because T-Mobile identifies those charges as non-government charges that may change without notice.
So “nearly meaningless” is best understood as an opinion about the guarantee’s practical value, not a legal conclusion. The promise protects something, but it leaves enough of the invoice exposed that customers should not treat it as a complete shield against bill increases.

How to compare the real cost
Use the final monthly bill—not the advertised service rate—as your comparison point:
Base plan price
+ carrier fees
+ government taxes and surcharges
+ device payments
+ insurance
+ add-ons and third-party services
- permanent discounts
- promotional credits
= actual monthly bill
Compare that amount over 12, 36, and 60 months. Clearly label any five-year projection as an estimate because taxes, fees, device payments, promotions, and plan terms can change.
Before leaving a legacy T-Mobile plan, compare its all-in bill with the new plan. A tax-inclusive grandfathered plan may have a higher advertised service price but a more predictable final charge than a newer plan advertised before taxes and fees.
Checklist before switching
- Screenshot the offer and save the full price-lock terms.
- Ask whether the quoted price includes taxes and fees.
- Identify every per-line carrier fee and whether it can change.
- Confirm the AutoPay payment-method requirement.
- Ask what happens if you add a line, upgrade a device, or change plans.
- Separate service pricing from device financing and insurance.
- Check when promotional credits expire and what can disqualify them.
- Compare the new all-in bill with your existing tax-inclusive bill.
If your bill increases
- Compare the old and new bills line by line.
- Determine whether the base plan price changed or an excluded item changed.
- Read the price-lock footnote and account-specific terms.
- Ask T-Mobile for the effective date, calculation, and contractual basis of the changed charge.
- Keep screenshots, order confirmations, and prior bills.
- If the protected base price changed during the guarantee period, escalate with T-Mobile and consider an FCC complaint or consumer-law advice.
A complaint may not produce a refund or enforcement action, but preserving the documents will make the dispute clearer.
Bottom line
T-Mobile’s latest price lock is best understood as a five-year base-rate promise, not a five-year bill guarantee. It may prevent a direct increase to the eligible plan’s price for talk, text, and 5G smartphone data. It does not necessarily prevent higher taxes, surcharges, carrier fees, device charges, add-ons, or the loss of discounts.
Before switching, compare the all-in amount on your actual bill. If predictable monthly costs matter more than the features included with Experience plans, a tax-inclusive legacy plan or a lower-cost prepaid or MVNO alternative may be worth considering—but only after checking current, like-for-like terms.
