AWS and Google Cloud Unveil a Managed Multicloud Connectivity Service

AWS and Google Cloud now offer a managed way to connect their cloud networks privately. AWS Interconnect – multicloud, which reached general availability on April 14, 2026, works with Google Cloud Cross-Cloud Interconnect to provide dedicated, provider-managed Layer 3 connectivity between Amazon VPC and Google Cloud VPC environments.

Despite the broad “multicloud” label, this is not a unified cloud-management console, a migration service, or a way to make applications portable between providers. Its main benefit is reducing the physical networking and routing work traditionally required to connect AWS and Google Cloud.

What AWS and Google Cloud announced

The offering combines two provider services:

  • AWS Interconnect – multicloud: AWS’s managed side of the connection.
  • Google Cloud Cross-Cloud Interconnect: Google Cloud’s corresponding interconnect and routing integration.

AWS announced the service in preview at re:Invent in December 2025 and announced general availability on April 14, 2026. Google Cloud was the first launch partner. AWS said Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure were expected to follow later in 2026, but a published API specification should not be confused with universal industry adoption.

The service is intended to connect an Amazon VPC with a supported Google Cloud VPC using private, provisioned connectivity. AWS said the GA service was available in five AWS Regions, although region pairings and availability can change and should be checked in the current AWS Interconnect documentation before deployment.

What the service actually does

The simplest way to think about it is as managed private plumbing between two clouds:

AWS VPC → Direct Connect Gateway → AWS Interconnect – multicloud → Google Cloud Cross-Cloud Interconnect / Cloud Router → Google Cloud VPC

The providers manage much of the underlying physical infrastructure and backbone transport. AWS says traffic travels across the AWS global backbone until handoff to the other provider’s private network, rather than requiring customers to operate their own routers or virtual routing appliances.

On the AWS side, documented connectivity options include an Amazon VPC, Virtual Private Gateway, Transit Gateway, and AWS Cloud WAN. The Google Cloud side uses its VPC and Cloud Router according to Google’s current implementation requirements. Routing still relies on BGP and must be designed, filtered, and tested by the customer.

Provisioning is available through the AWS Management Console, CLI, and API. “Minutes rather than weeks” describes creating a supported interconnect after accounts, permissions, regions, VPCs, and routing prerequisites are ready. It does not mean that security review, DNS, application testing, monitoring, or disaster-recovery validation can be completed in minutes.

Why enterprises may care

Before a managed AWS–Google option, a private connection commonly required a colocation facility or network provider, physical cross-connects, AWS Direct Connect, Google Cloud Dedicated or Partner Interconnect, routers, BGP configuration, redundant facilities, and multiple support relationships.

Likely use cases include:

  • Analytics split between AWS and Google Cloud.
  • AI environments that use data, training, or inference services in different clouds.
  • Cross-cloud disaster-recovery replication.
  • Applications that depend on specialized services from both providers.
  • Private service-to-service communication for predictable, high-volume traffic.
  • Consolidating cloud environments after acquisitions.
  • Regional or data-residency architectures that require workloads in both ecosystems.

However, network connectivity does not create application portability. A system can communicate across clouds while remaining dependent on provider-specific databases, queues, identity systems, storage APIs, DNS behavior, load balancers, or AI services.

How it differs from a VPN

A site-to-site VPN normally creates encrypted tunnels over an underlying network. It is often appropriate for smaller deployments, administration, backup connectivity, temporary environments, or moderate traffic.

A managed interconnect is designed for private, dedicated or provisioned bandwidth and more predictable performance. It can be a better fit when traffic is continuous, latency-sensitive, or too voluminous for a VPN.

Private transport does not remove ordinary security responsibilities. Customers still need AWS security groups and network policies, Google Cloud VPC firewall policies, route filtering, IAM controls, segmentation, logging, and application-layer encryption where appropriate.

How it differs from a do-it-yourself multicloud network

A DIY design using AWS Direct Connect, Google Cloud Interconnect, colocation, managed routers, BGP, SD-WAN, or a network-as-a-service provider offers more control over facilities, carriers, routing, and redundancy.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

The trade-off is operational complexity. Teams must coordinate physical provisioning, router configuration, route policies, monitoring, troubleshooting, and support boundaries. AWS and Google Cloud’s managed service reduces that plumbing burden, but it also makes the customer more dependent on supported regions, provider limits, pricing tiers, and the providers’ routing model.

Availability and resilience

AWS describes up to four-way resiliency across separate interconnect facilities and routing equipment. That is useful network redundancy, but it is not a guarantee that an application will survive every outage.

Before relying on the connection, test:

  • Failure of an interconnect facility or path.
  • BGP route withdrawal and reconvergence.
  • Firewall and route-policy changes.
  • Regional failover.
  • DNS, load-balancing, and certificate behavior.
  • Database replication and recovery.
  • Monitoring and alert delivery during a path failure.

Four redundant network paths cannot by themselves protect against database corruption, an identity outage, an incorrectly propagated route, a bad firewall rule, or a failed application control plane.

Region availability matters

The December 2025 preview documentation listed these AWS–Google Cloud pairings:

AWS Region Google Cloud Region
US East, N. Virginia (us-east-1) N. Virginia (us-east4)
US West, N. California (us-west-1) Los Angeles (us-west2)
US West, Oregon (us-west-2) Oregon (us-west1)
Europe, London (eu-west-2) London (europe-west2)
Europe, Frankfurt (eu-central-1) Frankfurt (europe-west3)

These were preview-era pairings, while the GA announcement said the service was available in five AWS Regions without listing every pairing in its summary. Treat the table as an orientation point, not a substitute for the current provider region matrix.

An unsupported region does not make private connectivity impossible, but it may require conventional Direct Connect and Google Cloud Interconnect, a third-party network fabric, or a VPN. A distant supported pair can also introduce latency and cross-region data-transfer costs.

Pricing: the hourly fee is only part of the bill

AWS prices Interconnect – multicloud according to selected bandwidth, geographic scope, and an automatically assigned pricing tier. Billing is hourly and rounded up to the nearest hour. AWS says there is no separate AWS per-gigabyte data-transfer charge for the interconnect itself, but that does not mean the complete cross-cloud path is free of usage charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other costs can include:

  • Google Cloud’s charges for its side of the connection.
  • AWS cross-region data transfer.
  • Transit Gateway data processing.
  • AWS Cloud WAN charges.
  • VPC, logging, monitoring, backup, and replication costs.
  • Third-party networking or support fees.

AWS gives these illustrative examples for a 10 Gbps connection between AWS US East, N. Virginia, and Google Cloud N. Virginia:

Example AWS price Approximate 730-hour month
Tier 1 $12.33 per hour $9,000.90
Tier 4 with a Cloud WAN topology including a Singapore Core Network Edge $51.78 per hour $37,799.40

These are AWS examples, not universal prices. Actual charges vary by region, bandwidth, topology, contract, taxes, and future pricing changes. The large difference illustrates an important risk: AWS says the interconnect receives a single tier based on the highest-tier path it must support. A Cloud WAN design spanning distant regions can therefore make a connection much more expensive than a local-region example suggests. See the AWS pricing page and pricing documentation for current terms.

AWS also advertises one 500 Mbps free-tier interconnect per cloud service provider, per Region, subject to its service terms. That allowance is not unlimited production capacity and should be confirmed before it is included in a budget.

Security: private does not mean automatically secure

The service is designed to avoid public-internet transport. AWS describes provider-managed private connectivity, and the provider interconnect links use MACsec protection according to AWS’s product information.

That protects an important part of the transport path, but customers remain responsible for the security architecture. A production design should address:

  • Application-level encryption and key management.
  • Audit logging and incident response.
  • Data residency and cross-border requirements.

Security and compliance teams should also establish where logs, support access, keys, and sensitive traffic are handled.

Who should consider it?

The strongest candidate is an enterprise with predictable, sustained AWS–Google Cloud traffic that values private transport and wants to avoid building and operating the physical network itself.

It is less compelling when traffic is occasional or low-volume, when ordinary HTTPS APIs are sufficient, when a VPN meets performance requirements, or when the workloads sit outside supported region pairs. It may also be a poor fit for teams that cannot operate BGP, route propagation, capacity planning, and failure testing.

A practical evaluation checklist

  1. Map the traffic. Measure volume, direction, burst behavior, latency sensitivity, and replication frequency.
  2. Check region pairs. Confirm current AWS and Google Cloud availability, latency, residency rules, and cross-region billing.
  3. Review the topology. Include every VPC, Transit Gateway attachment, Cloud WAN edge, and route path in the cost and capacity model.
  4. Resolve addressing. Identify overlapping CIDRs, BGP route limits, route filters, and failover advertisements before provisioning.
  5. Model the full bill. Include both providers, processing, transfer, monitoring, backup, and support charges.
  6. Design security separately. Treat MACsec and private transport as infrastructure protections, not a replacement for firewalls, IAM, and application controls.
  7. Test failure. Validate throughput, latency, route withdrawal, reconvergence, application behavior, and regional recovery.

Alternatives

Public internet and encrypted application protocols

This is often the simplest choice for loosely coupled services and small traffic volumes. It avoids dedicated capacity but provides less predictable performance and requires careful application security and observability.

Site-to-site VPN

A VPN is widely supported, relatively quick to deploy, and useful as a backup path. Throughput, latency, tunnel management, and internet-path variability can make it unsuitable for sustained high-volume workloads.

DIY Direct Connect and Google Cloud Interconnect

This provides maximum control and may reuse existing colocation or carrier contracts. It also requires more physical provisioning, routing, hardware, troubleshooting, and coordination.

Third-party network fabrics

Cloud exchanges and network-as-a-service providers can be better for organizations connecting many clouds, regions, branches, or data centers. They add another vendor, billing model, support boundary, and possible latency or capacity charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Application-level decoupling

Sometimes the best multicloud design avoids a permanent, synchronous network dependency. Asynchronous replication, narrowly scoped APIs, event-driven integration, or keeping stateful systems within one provider can reduce failure-domain complexity, though these approaches may require more application engineering or tolerate replication lag.

The bottom line

AWS Interconnect – multicloud and Google Cloud Cross-Cloud Interconnect make private AWS–Google networking easier to provision and operate. They do not provide a shared control plane, eliminate vendor lock-in, or automatically make workloads portable. The service is most valuable for enterprises with sustained, high-throughput, latency-sensitive, or compliance-sensitive traffic—and only after region, routing, resilience, and total-cost assumptions have been tested.
