Short answer: Justin Long did not publicly announce a permanent move from Apple to Qualcomm. In a Qualcomm commercial unveiled on June 3, 2024, he reprises the familiar Mac persona, grows exasperated by Mac-related alerts, and looks for a Windows PC powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform. The closing line—“Things change”—is the joke, not proof of Long’s personal computer choice.
When this happened: Qualcomm introduced the spot during its Computex 2024 keynote. It is a historical advertisement, not a new 2026 endorsement. (MacRumors; 9to5Mac)
What Qualcomm’s commercial shows
The skit places Long in the visual and cultural territory associated with Apple’s Mac character. Notifications or messages complain about app compatibility, limited storage, battery concerns and other frustrations Qualcomm presents as Mac problems. Long then searches for a Windows on Arm computer using a Snapdragon processor. The ad ends with “Things change.” (MacRumors; Windows Central)
Those complaints are advertising devices, not a controlled comparison. Storage pressure, notifications and application problems can occur on Windows as well, and the commercial does not establish that Snapdragon machines avoid them.

Who is the “I’m a Mac” guy?
Long played the personified Mac opposite John Hodgman’s PC in Apple’s “Get a Mac” campaign. Apple launched the series in 2006 and ran it for roughly three years. Contemporary coverage commonly counts 66 released commercials, while Long later said about 300 were filmed; those figures can describe different parts of the production. (MacRumors; 9to5Mac)
That history gives Qualcomm an instantly recognizable shortcut: viewers do not need an explanation of why Long’s appearance matters. The humor comes from reversing a role that once personified Apple’s side of the PC-versus-Mac argument.
What Qualcomm was selling
The target was Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X platform for Windows PCs, especially the Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus. Around Computex 2024, Qualcomm and PC makers presented those chips as the foundation for a new generation of Windows on Arm and Copilot+ PCs. Initial products from Microsoft, Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung were announced for June 18, 2024; that was launch timing, not a statement of every model’s current availability. (MacRumors; Windows Central)
“Copilot+ PC” is a product category and branding designation, not a synonym for every Windows laptop or every Snapdragon computer. A buyer still needs to check the exact processor, software support, ports, display and manufacturer implementation.

Did Justin Long really switch from Mac to Qualcomm?
No verified coverage establishes that Long permanently changed his daily computer or now uses Qualcomm exclusively. The accurate description is that the commercial portrays Long’s former Mac persona choosing a Snapdragon-powered Windows PC.

- It does not prove that Long has left Apple personally.
- It does not show that he believes Macs are technically inferior.
- It does not prove that Snapdragon universally outperforms Apple silicon.
Calling this “fealty” is headline language. Long is an actor hired to perform a premise built around his Apple-associated role.
Why the callback was strategically useful
Qualcomm was trying to make Windows on Arm legible to laptop shoppers who already viewed Apple’s M-series Macs as an important reference point for battery life and performance. “The former Mac guy now sees a reason to choose a Snapdragon PC” communicates that positioning emotionally in a few seconds. (MacRumors; 9to5Mac)
Long had already appeared in rival-brand advertising. Intel used him in 2021 ads criticizing aspects of M1-era MacBooks and promoting PCs, and Huawei used him in a 2017 Mate 9 campaign. Qualcomm’s spot therefore continues a pattern of brands recasting an actor whose Apple association carries built-in meaning. (TheWrap; TechSpot; MacRumors)

Compatibility is model- and app-specific
Windows on Arm can run native Arm applications and, where supported, x86 software through emulation. That does not guarantee that every legacy program, driver, plug-in, VPN tool, enterprise utility, game or anti-cheat system works correctly. Check Microsoft’s current guidance for the exact applications you need: Windows on Arm overview and Apps on Arm.
Performance and battery claims need conditions
A Snapdragon X result depends on the processor, laptop chassis, memory, storage, screen, power profile, Windows version and whether the workload is native or emulated. Comparisons with Apple silicon are meaningful only when those conditions and the tested applications are disclosed. The commercial supplies none of that evidence.

Mac frustrations are not uniquely Mac problems
Notifications, low storage and battery complaints can reflect settings, workload or hardware rather than an operating system’s defining weakness. The ad’s framing should not be treated as a general finding about macOS.

- List required software. Confirm native Arm support or acceptable emulation for every essential application.
- Check peripherals and drivers. Verify printers, scanners, audio devices, security keys, docks and specialist hardware.
- Check games and plug-ins. Look specifically for anti-cheat, older plug-in and graphics-driver limitations.
- Compare the complete configuration. Processor tier, RAM, storage, display resolution and refresh rate affect both speed and battery life.
- Use the return policy as a safeguard. Compatibility can depend on a particular workflow, so read the manufacturer’s current return and warranty terms before purchase.

How it compares with choosing a Mac
| Priority | More relevant option | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| macOS workflow, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and Apple-device integration | Apple-silicon Mac | Application and accessory requirements on the current macOS version |
| Windows-only software or corporate Windows environment | Windows laptop | Native Arm support, emulation behavior and enterprise tools |
| Thin design, quiet operation and long unplugged use | A Snapdragon X model may be worth evaluating | Independent testing of the exact chassis and your workload |
| Legacy drivers, niche utilities or broad PC gaming support | Often an x86 Windows model, depending on requirements | Driver and anti-cheat compatibility before purchase |
Qualcomm’s competition with Apple’s Mac platform is separate from its modem-supply relationship with Apple; one contemporaneous report said the companies’ modem agreement extended through 2027. The advertisement does not signal a breakdown in that relationship or mean Apple laptops use Snapdragon processors. (9to5Mac)
The Bottom Line
Qualcomm’s “I’m a Mac” commercial is a clever cultural inversion: Justin Long performs the former Mac persona considering a Snapdragon-powered Windows PC. It is useful evidence of Qualcomm’s marketing strategy, not evidence of Long’s private allegiance or a universal technical verdict. Evaluate a Snapdragon laptop by your applications, drivers, games, configuration and return options—not by the celebrity in the ad.
