Apple’s “95% clean-energy suppliers” figure explained: It refers to manufacturing spend, not 95% of suppliers

Apple did not say that 95% of all its suppliers were already using clean energy. In April 2024, Apple said more than 320 suppliers representing 95% of its direct manufacturing spend had committed to using 100% renewable electricity for Apple-related production by 2030. That is a spend-weighted commitment, not a count of supplier companies, factories, or the entire supply chain.

What Apple’s 95% figure actually measures

Apple’s April 2024 announcement used two different measures: supplier count and manufacturing-spend coverage. More than 320 suppliers had joined or committed to the Supplier Clean Energy Program, and those suppliers represented 95% of Apple’s direct manufacturing spend.

Statement What the evidence supports
“95% of suppliers use clean energy” Not supported by Apple’s wording.
Suppliers representing 95% of direct manufacturing spend Apple’s April 2024 claim.
More than 320 suppliers committed A supplier-count milestone, not 95% of all suppliers.
100% renewable electricity by 2030 The forward-looking target for Apple-related production.

Spend coverage can be dominated by a relatively small number of very large manufacturers. Smaller suppliers, subcontractors, upstream material producers and indirect vendors may represent little direct spend while still operating outside the reported percentage. Apple’s wording also concerns direct manufacturing spend, not its entire extended supply chain. A contemporaneous analysis noted that Apple had not specified what share of the full supply chain was covered: 9to5Mac’s April 2024 analysis.

What suppliers committed to by 2030

The commitment is to use 100% renewable electricity for Apple-related production by the end of 2030. Apple also added a renewable-energy requirement to its Supplier Code of Conduct for direct suppliers involved in manufacturing Apple products. Its supply-chain reporting describes a broader expectation that major manufacturing and logistics partners decarbonize the Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions associated with Apple production.

“Apple-related production” matters. A supplier can procure renewable electricity for factories or production lines serving Apple without using renewable electricity across its entire business or for other customers.

Timeline: what Apple has reported

Date Reported milestone
July 2020 Apple announced a plan to become carbon neutral across its business, manufacturing supply chain and product life cycle by 2030. Apple announcement.
September 12, 2023 More than 300 manufacturers had committed to 100% clean energy for Apple production by 2030, representing more than 90% of direct manufacturing spend. Apple update.
April 18, 2024 More than 320 suppliers represented 95% of direct manufacturing spend. Apple said 16.5 gigawatts of renewable energy were online in its supply chain. Projects generated more than 25.5 million megawatt-hours in the preceding year and, according to Apple, avoided more than 18.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Apple update.
April 16, 2025 Apple reported a more than 60% reduction in global greenhouse-gas emissions from its 2015 level, based on 2024 performance. It said suppliers had 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity online. Apple report.
April 16, 2026 Apple said direct suppliers procured more than 20 gigawatts of renewable energy in 2025, generating more than 38 million megawatt-hours—enough, by Apple’s comparison, to power more than 3.4 million U.S. households for a year. Apple separately procured 1.8 gigawatts for offices, retail stores and data centers. Apple update.

The 2026 update did not announce a new percentage of suppliers or direct manufacturing spend. Therefore, Apple’s last clearly stated 95% milestone remains the April 2024 figure, while the newer release reports increased procurement and generation for 2025.

What “clean energy” covers—and what it does not

In this program, Apple’s formal wording is mainly about renewable electricity. Suppliers can meet electricity needs through several arrangements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • On-site solar or other renewable generation;
  • Direct investment in renewable projects;
  • Power-purchase agreements;
  • Utility green-power programs;
  • Renewable-energy certificates or comparable instruments; and
  • Regional, grid-based procurement.

Apple’s program materials say projects must meet social and environmental standards: Supplier Clean Energy Program update. “Procured,” “generated” and “online” are not interchangeable. Procurement can involve contracts, certificates or regional accounting; it does not necessarily mean every factory has a dedicated renewable generator or receives renewable electricity every hour.

Renewable electricity primarily addresses electricity-related, or Scope 2, emissions. It does not automatically remove:

  • Fuel burned directly at factories (Scope 1);
  • Industrial-process emissions, including gases used in semiconductor and display manufacturing;
  • Emissions from mining and processing raw materials;
  • Freight, logistics and employee travel;
  • Product-use emissions after sale; or
  • End-of-life emissions.

Apple reported in 2025 that 26 direct semiconductor suppliers had committed to abating at least 90% of fluorinated greenhouse-gas emissions from facilities producing for Apple by 2030, and that 100% of its direct display suppliers had made the same pledge. Those commitments show why renewable electricity alone is not equivalent to carbon-neutral suppliers.

How the supplier program fits Apple 2030

Apple’s broader goal is carbon neutrality across its entire footprint by 2030. Its stated pathway is to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 75% from a 2015 baseline, then address the residual emissions with high-quality carbon-removal projects. The company reported a more than 60% reduction from the 2015 level in its 2025 environmental update, based on 2024 performance, and said its 2024 programs avoided an estimated 41 million metric tons of greenhouse-gas emissions. It attributed 21.8 million metric tons of avoided emissions in 2024 to supplier renewable-energy procurement. These avoided-emissions figures are Apple’s estimates, not a claim that every facility achieved an identical measured reduction.

How to evaluate the claim as an investor or consumer

Five separate questions prevent the 95% number from being overinterpreted:

  1. Supplier count: How many companies made a commitment?
  2. Spend coverage: What percentage of Apple’s direct manufacturing spend do those companies represent?
  3. Facility coverage: How many plants and production sites are included?
  4. Electricity coverage: What share of electricity used for Apple production is renewable?
  5. Emissions coverage: What share of total greenhouse-gas emissions is addressed, including fuels and industrial processes?

Apple’s 95% number answers primarily the second question. It does not establish that 95% of companies, factories, electricity consumption or total emissions are covered. A commitment also differs from a completed transition: Apple’s 2024 language described suppliers that had committed to the 2030 change.

What remains undisclosed in the latest update

Apple’s published figures do not, in the material cited here, provide a new 2026 percentage for total suppliers or direct manufacturing spend. They also do not give a complete facility-by-facility account of renewable-electricity matching, identify the share of energy matched hour by hour, or quantify coverage of every upstream and indirect supplier. Readers assessing the claim should look for future reporting on completed transitions rather than commitments, geographic and facility coverage, treatment of certificates, and independent assurance of the reported metrics.

The accurate takeaway

Apple’s progress is substantial: supplier renewable-energy capacity and procurement have increased, and the company has set a 100% renewable-electricity objective for Apple-related production by 2030. But “95% of suppliers using clean energy” overstates the source. The defensible formulation is that, in April 2024, more than 320 suppliers representing 95% of Apple’s direct manufacturing spend had committed to that 2030 renewable-electricity target.
