Preliminary IDC data counted 322.7 million worldwide smartphone shipments in July–September 2025, up 2.6% from a year earlier. IDC attributed the increase to replacement upgrades, new form factors and more affordable AI-enabled phones.
That distinction matters for buyers, investors and manufacturers. Shipments measure devices moving into the channel, not necessarily phones activated by consumers. And the available data shows AI strengthening the upgrade proposition alongside foldables, premium launches, promotions and regional affordability—not proving that generative-AI features alone persuaded people to replace working phones.

What IDC actually measured
IDC’s preliminary result covers worldwide smartphone shipments in Q3 2025. The firm reported 322.7 million units, a 2.6% year-over-year increase in its October 13, 2025 release (IDC). Computerworld reported the unit total and vendor context on October 15, 2025 (Computerworld).
A shipment is a device supplied by a manufacturer into a distribution channel. It is not the same as a retail sell-through, an activation, consumer usage or vendor revenue. Shipments can be affected by inventory building, product launches, channel timing and promotions. They are therefore an important market indicator, but not a direct survey of why people bought phones.

| Measure | What the Q3 2025 figure says |
|---|---|
| Geography | Worldwide |
| Period | July–September 2025 |
| Units | 322.7 million smartphones shipped |
| Change | 2.6% higher than Q3 2024 |
| Status | Preliminary IDC data, released October 13, 2025 |
For a mature, highly penetrated category, positive unit growth is meaningful. It is still modest, however: one quarter at 2.6% does not establish a durable expansion in units, revenue or profits.
Why upgrades lifted shipments
IDC’s explanation combines several upgrade mechanisms rather than identifying one universal trigger.
Aging phones finally being replaced
Longer ownership periods can defer replacement until a device’s battery, storage, performance or software-support position becomes less satisfactory. The Q3 result is consistent with some deferred demand returning, but the cited release does not quantify how many buyers replaced phones for any particular reason.

Flagship launches, trade-in credits, instalment plans and temporary discounts can lower the effective cost of replacing a working phone. These incentives may stimulate a purchase even when the underlying handset market remains mature. They also make a shipment increase difficult to interpret as pure organic demand.

New form factors
Foldables give consumers a visible hardware change that conventional slab phones often lack. They can support premium pricing and differentiate a vendor’s range, although their smaller absolute volumes mean strong foldable sales do not automatically transform the global market.
AI’s real role in the recovery
IDC identified more affordable AI-enabled smartphones as one contributor to Q3 growth (IDC). That is evidence of AI being part of the product and demand mix, not proof that AI was the dominant reason consumers upgraded.
“AI-enabled” can mean several things
- AI-capable hardware: a processor or neural-processing unit designed to run machine-learning workloads.
- On-device AI: functions processed locally, potentially improving latency, privacy and offline operation but constrained by battery, heat and computing capacity.
- Cloud-connected AI: more capable remote models that depend on connectivity, service availability and a vendor’s privacy and operating policies.
- AI marketing: labels applied to camera processing, photo editing, translation, assistants or summarisation, some of which may be incremental improvements rather than exclusive capabilities.
The practical test is whether a feature creates a benefit that a buyer cannot obtain on an older phone through an operating-system update or an app. The available IDC summary does not provide consumer survey evidence isolating that causal effect. AI may be the purchase trigger for some users, an additional benefit for others, or mainly a marketing description for broader camera and processor upgrades.

- Is the feature available in the buyer’s country and language?
- Does it run on the device, require a cloud connection or require a subscription?
- Is it exclusive to the new model, or will older hardware receive it in software?
- Does repeated use justify the trade-in cost after novelty fades?
- What privacy, data-retention and accuracy limitations apply?
Foldables supplied a stronger hardware reason to upgrade
Computerworld linked Samsung’s strong performance to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 (Computerworld). Foldables matter strategically because they change the physical product, create differentiation in a visually similar slab-phone market and can support higher average selling prices.

The trade-off is that buyers must consider thickness, weight, durability, repair cost and hinge or screen concerns. The evidence available here does not show that foldables accounted for most of the 322.7 million global shipments; it shows that they helped particular vendors compete for upgrades.
Which vendors benefited, and where
The growth stories were not equivalent. The source coverage describes different combinations of premium demand, form-factor launches, affordability and regional distribution.
| Vendor | Reported Q3 context | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | Strong July quarter, with contribution from the iPhone 17 series | Premium replacement demand and a major product launch |
| Samsung | Strong performance associated with Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 | Premium and foldable differentiation |
| Xiaomi | Gains in Europe and Latin America, particularly through Redmi Note and Poco | Value and midrange opportunities across regions |
| Transsion | Expansion in Africa supported by low prices and distribution | Affordability and channel reach, rather than premium AI demand |
| Vivo | Growth in emerging markets, with AI-enhanced camera positioning and online promotions | Camera-led differentiation, promotions and emerging-market demand |
These examples make a global rebound look less uniform than a headline about Apple or Samsung might suggest. Premium launches can raise industry revenue, while lower-priced models may contribute more to unit growth. Regional differences in income, distribution, network quality and feature availability also shape what “AI demand” means in practice.

- The result covers one quarter. Q3 2025 growth was preliminary and cannot by itself establish a multi-year trend.
- Shipments are not sell-through. Channel inventory and launch timing can temporarily lift reported units.
- Growth drivers are mixed. IDC cited upgrades, new form factors and affordable AI-enabled phones; the data does not isolate AI’s causal contribution.
- Promotions can subsidise demand. Discounts and financing may bring purchases forward while pressuring vendor margins or teaching buyers to wait for sales.
- Premium excitement is not mass-market volume. Foldables and flagship launches can attract attention without representing most shipments.
IDC expected demand for newer AI-based products, aggressive price promotions and robust product portfolios to support a strong finish to 2025, according to the October 2025 coverage (Computerworld). That was an expectation at the time, not a verified account of what happened after Q3 2025.

What the trend means for manufacturers and investors
- Premium AI hardware: potentially higher margins, but a narrower addressable market.
- Affordable AI phones: greater unit potential in emerging markets, with tighter margins and possible compromises in feature quality.
- Foldables: differentiation and premium pricing, balanced against manufacturing, durability and repair challenges.
- Long software support: improves ownership value and sustainability but can lengthen replacement cycles.
- On-device processing: privacy and latency advantages constrained by battery and thermal limits.
- Cloud AI: broader model capability, but dependent on connectivity, service costs and privacy policies.
The key business question is not how many phones carry an AI label. It is whether vendors can turn useful, reliable features into willingness to pay without relying indefinitely on discounts.
How buyers should evaluate an AI phone
- Identify the actual feature. Ask what the phone does that your current device cannot do, rather than treating “AI” as a specification.
- Check availability. Confirm country, language, operating-system, processor and memory requirements.
- Read the service terms. Determine whether processing is local, cloud-based or subscription-gated, and how data is handled.
- Calculate the upgrade cost. Compare the trade-in value, financing interest, promotional expiry and total ownership cost.
- Compare alternatives. A discounted previous-generation flagship may deliver better camera, battery and software value than a new midrange AI phone.
- Assess longevity. Check promised software and security support, battery replacement options, repairability and warranty coverage.
For foldables, add durability, hinge and screen repair costs, weight and thickness to the comparison. For imported or region-specific brands, verify carrier compatibility, official warranty service and whether the advertised AI functions work locally.
The Bottom Line
IDC’s Q3 2025 data supports a measured recovery: 322.7 million smartphone shipments, up 2.6% year over year. AI helped refresh the value proposition, particularly as it reached more affordable devices, but upgrades, foldables, launches, promotions and regional affordability worked together. The evidence does not show that AI alone created a broad smartphone supercycle.
