The program began in Seattle in 2016 as a fleet of branded trucks offering limited-time products for local pickup. During the pandemic, Amazon shifted the deals to online ordering and direct shipping. Once Treasure Truck no longer required a truck visit, Amazon said the service overlapped with deals already available through Amazon.com.
The shutdown applied to the branded deals operation. It did not necessarily mean every vehicle was scrapped: Amazon indicated that trucks could still be used for community-support initiatives.

What Amazon shut down
Amazon discontinued Treasure Truck as a consumer deals brand. The company said customers would continue to find new deals every day through Amazon.com, but it did not announce a separate, one-for-one successor to the truck program.

GeekWire reported that the last daily deal under the Treasure Truck banner was a Funko Schitt’s Creek Party Game priced at $19.99. That should be understood as the last reported branded daily deal—not necessarily the last item ever sold from one of the vehicles.
How Treasure Truck originally worked
The original program made an online discount into a local shopping event:
- Customers received an alert about the day’s featured product, including through text messages.
- They reserved the deal in Amazon’s mobile app.
- They traveled to a designated location where a Treasure Truck was scheduled to stop.
- They collected the item while local inventory lasted.
The limited stock and fixed pickup window created scarcity. Traveling to the truck was inconvenient compared with ordinary Amazon delivery, but that friction was also part of the appeal: the purchase felt more like an event than a routine online order.
From a Seattle experiment to a national fleet
Amazon launched Treasure Truck in Seattle in 2016. Its first reported deal was an inflatable paddleboard priced at $99, described as a 79% discount from a listed regular price of $476.99.
The trucks also served as marketing platforms. Examples included a midnight Harry Potter book release, a 2016 promotion involving Marshawn Lynch and a Beast Mode-branded Amazon Echo, and a 17-hour, 1,116-mile trip from Seattle to Las Vegas for CES in January 2017. Amazon received a design patent for the vehicles in 2017.
By 2019, Amazon had expanded the fleet to more than 100 vehicles operating in 29 U.S. cities, according to GeekWire’s reporting. Seattle, Los Angeles, and Phoenix were identified as the top-selling cities that year, while Chicago, San Antonio, and Sacramento had frequent customers. Fast-selling promotions included Valentine’s Day flowers and chocolate, Sony televisions, and smart notebooks.

Those figures describe the program’s reported 2019 footprint; they should not be treated as a current fleet count.

The pandemic removed Treasure Truck’s defining feature
In August 2020, COVID-19 conditions forced Amazon to stop relying on in-person pickups. Treasure Truck purchases were instead ordered online and shipped directly to customers.
The change solved an immediate practical problem: customers no longer had to gather at a truck location. It also made the deals available without depending on a particular city, route, or day.
But the pivot changed the product itself. The original model combined:
- a single featured deal;
- a physical truck;
- local pickup;
- limited inventory; and
- a neighborhood event.
The online version retained the deal branding but removed the physical experience. In practical terms, it became much closer to an ordinary Amazon promotion delivered through Amazon’s existing fulfillment network.

Why Amazon ended the program
Amazon said customer feedback on the online version was positive, but concluded that online Treasure Truck deals were largely redundant with the deals already available on Amazon.com.
COVID-19 therefore appears to have been an accelerant rather than the complete explanation. The pandemic prompted the August 2020 move to shipping; the stated reason for ending the branded program was that its online format overlapped with Amazon’s broader deals infrastructure.
There was also a clear business trade-off. A truck-based retail service requires local inventory planning, drivers and support staff, city-by-city scheduling, route coordination, and enough demand in each market to justify the activation. Online fulfillment can reach customers across a much wider area without tying a promotion to a specific truck stop.
Treasure Truck’s physical layer created memorable marketing and customer engagement, but once that layer disappeared, the additional value of maintaining a separate deals brand became harder to distinguish from Amazon’s standard online promotions.

Amazon said employees supporting Treasure Truck would move into other company roles. The available reporting does not support describing the change as a Treasure Truck-specific layoff.

Amazon also indicated, in an FAQ reported by GeekWire, that it did not intend simply to get rid of the trucks. The vehicles could be used for community-support efforts such as distributing lunch kits, laptops, books, or masks.
That does not confirm that the entire fleet remained in service or that every vehicle was repurposed. The supported conclusion is narrower: Amazon ended the consumer deals operation while leaving open the possibility of using some trucks for community work.

There was no named replacement program announced in the available reporting. Amazon’s stated alternative was its existing online deals ecosystem.

Customers looking for comparable discounts would generally need to use Amazon’s regular deals pages, product coupons, limited-time promotions, Prime Day offers, and Amazon app notifications. Those options provide online savings, but they do not recreate the original Treasure Truck experience of reserving a scarce item and collecting it from a branded vehicle.
In other words, Amazon replaced the function—finding discounted products online—rather than the format. The company continued offering deals, but not through the same truck-based consumer program.

The legacy of Treasure Truck
Treasure Truck was an experiment in making digital commerce physical. Amazon used trucks, local schedules, scarcity, product launches, and occasional celebrity promotions to give online shopping a neighborhood presence.
Its story is more nuanced than “the pandemic killed the program.” The pandemic made the original model impractical and led to an online pivot. That pivot improved convenience but removed the feature that made Treasure Truck distinctive. Once the service looked like another online deal channel, Amazon had less reason to operate it as a separate branded experience.
For shoppers, the practical result was simple: the Treasure Truck deals program ended in 2022, while Amazon’s ordinary online discounts continued. For Amazon, the experiment showed both the marketing power and the operational cost of connecting an internet marketplace to physical, city-based retail events.
GeekWire’s report on the shutdown was published November 1, 2022. The available evidence does not establish a later revival of the branded consumer deals program.
