Amazon confirmed on January 28, 2026, that organizational changes would affect approximately 16,000 roles across the company. The announcement came one day after an AWS meeting invitation and draft message appeared to reveal the plan early.
These were described as primarily corporate reductions—not a cut to Amazon’s entire workforce of warehouse, delivery and other frontline employees. Amazon has not published a complete breakdown by division, country, job level or function.

The most precise description is therefore “cuts affecting approximately 16,000 roles.” That wording does not establish that 16,000 people were immediately dismissed, because some affected employees could have opportunities to move into other Amazon positions.
How the layoff news leaked
The formal announcement followed an apparent internal-email error on January 27. A meeting invitation associated with Colleen Aubrey, AWS’s senior vice president for applied AI solutions, was sent to many cloud-computing employees before the planned company communication.
According to Reuters’ report, the invitation included a draft or commiseration message referring to the cuts as “Project Dawn.” It incorrectly said affected employees in the United States, Canada and Costa Rica had already been informed. The meeting was quickly canceled.

The Guardian reported that the invitation contained a draft email and that Amazon’s formal announcement followed hours later. The sequence indicates that the message prematurely exposed an already-planned restructuring; there is no evidence that the email caused Amazon to decide on the cuts.
Who was affected?
Major coverage characterized the affected positions as corporate roles. AWS was connected to the leak, but Amazon confirmed an Amazon-wide total rather than 16,000 AWS layoffs.
The Associated Press noted that Amazon did not disclose which business units or locations would be affected. The following details remain established or unresolved:

| Question | What is known |
|---|---|
| Total scope | Approximately 16,000 Amazon roles. |
| Type of work | Broadly described as corporate positions. |
| AWS total | Not stated; AWS was associated with the leaked communication, not the confirmed total. |
| Country-by-country numbers | Not publicly provided by Amazon. |
| Timing of every elimination | Not established; changes may occur through restructuring and internal-placement processes. |
Reports described the cuts as global or company-wide, but that should not be confused with a complete public geographic count. The leaked statement about U.S., Canadian and Costa Rican workers being notified was itself inaccurate.
What support did affected U.S. employees receive?
For most U.S.-based affected employees, Amazon said there would be a 90-day period to search for another Amazon role internally. Workers who do not find, or do not want, another internal position may receive transition support including:
- Severance pay.
- Outplacement services.
- Applicable health-insurance benefits.
The 90-day arrangement is not a universal global policy. Notice timing, redeployment options, severance and benefits can differ under local law and company practice outside the United States.

How this compares with Amazon’s October cuts
Amazon announced approximately 14,000 corporate layoffs in October 2025. The January announcement was the second major corporate-reduction wave in roughly three months, bringing the two announced figures to about 30,000 corporate roles over that period.
ABC News and AP coverage described the January action in that context. Amazon said teams did not all complete restructuring on the same timetable, so the two rounds should not automatically be treated as perfectly separate accounting exercises.
Was artificial intelligence the reason?
The cuts arrived as Amazon invests heavily in generative AI and seeks to streamline operations. CEO Andy Jassy has separately discussed the possibility that generative AI could reduce some corporate work over the following years, as reported by AP.

However, Amazon’s formal explanation for this announcement focused on organizational layers, ownership and bureaucracy. The company did not say that AI directly caused every one of the approximately 16,000 role eliminations. The defensible conclusion is that AI is strategic context, not a confirmed sole explanation for this round.
Does this start a recurring cycle of mass layoffs?
Amazon said it was not planning a pattern of announcing broad reductions every few months. It also said individual teams would continue evaluating ownership, speed and capacity and could make adjustments as appropriate.
That leaves two facts that can coexist: Amazon says there is no planned regular cycle of company-wide announcements, while smaller or function-specific reorganizations remain possible. The company has also said it will keep hiring and investing in selected strategic functions.

Quick Recap
What employees, applicants and investors should take from the announcement
- The confirmed figure is approximately 16,000 roles, not a verified count of 16,000 immediate external terminations.
- The positions were primarily corporate; the announcement was not a statement that Amazon’s warehouse, delivery and entire frontline workforce was being cut by that amount.
- The AWS email was an early leak of the plan, not necessarily the formal termination notice for every affected worker.
- No complete breakdown by business, country or job level has been published.
- U.S. employees generally had a stated 90-day internal-job-search window, while international arrangements vary.
- AI investment forms part of Amazon’s broader strategy, but Amazon attributed this announcement to restructuring rather than assigning every cut directly to AI.
