The March 2026 Qatar helium shutdown did not leave SK hynix or Samsung with only 14 days of gas. The widely reported “two-week clock” described the time needed to reroute cryogenic equipment, qualify alternative suppliers and stabilize deliveries if the outage continued. South Korean chipmakers were highly exposed—South Korea imported 64.7% of its helium from Qatar in 2025—but reports said they held roughly four to six months of inventory. The risk became more serious in July, when China temporarily banned helium exports.
What happened at Ras Laffan
Attacks connected to the Iran conflict disrupted QatarEnergy’s Ras Laffan complex on March 2, 2026. QatarEnergy declared force majeure on March 4. Helium is recovered as a by-product of natural-gas processing, so an LNG-related outage can also remove helium from the export market.

Industry and news estimates put Qatar’s unavailable share at about 30% of global helium supply; one 2024 estimate cited by PIMCO was 36%. These figures describe production or export availability removed from the market—not necessarily helium that physically vanished, and not proof that every Qatar-linked plant stopped producing completely. A production outage, a shipping interruption and a contractual force-majeure declaration are related but different events.

Why semiconductor fabs need helium
Helium is used in several parts of advanced manufacturing, but not as a universal coolant for every silicon wafer. Depending on the tool and process, semiconductor-grade helium supports:
- Wafer and equipment cooling;
- Plasma etching and chemical-vapor or atomic-layer deposition;
- Lithography-related systems;
- Purging and contamination control;
- Vacuum leak detection; and
- Some cryogenic equipment.
The required purity, pressure, flow and gas mixture vary by tool. A medical or general-industrial cylinder is not automatically acceptable for a fab. Helium is recovered from helium-bearing geological formations and cannot be manufactured quickly when a shipment is delayed.
Another gas can sometimes replace helium in a particular application. That normally requires equipment review, process testing, purity checks and formal requalification. There is no quick, drop-in substitute for every semiconductor-grade use. Reuters’ account reproduced by Fidelity describes the range of chipmaking applications and helium’s limited short-term substitutability.

South Korea’s exposure was high, but not equal to SK hynix’s sourcing
The Korea International Trade Association figure cited in reporting says Qatar supplied 64.7% of South Korea’s helium imports in 2025. That is a national import statistic. It does not reveal what percentage of SK hynix’s or Samsung’s own consumption came from Qatar, because companies can hold different contracts, inventories, suppliers and delivery routes.
South Korea’s exposure matters because Samsung and SK hynix operate some of the world’s largest memory-chip manufacturing networks. Alternative volumes also compete with medical imaging, fiber-optic production, hard-drive manufacturing, aerospace, defense, scientific research and other industrial users.

What SK hynix actually did
Available reporting says SK hynix had diversified helium supplies and secured sufficient inventory. It does not establish the exact number of qualified suppliers, the share previously sourced from Qatar, the duration of inventory at each fab, emergency spot purchases, or any product-by-product rationing.
Accordingly, “reported to have diversified” is more accurate than saying the company was proven to have been forced into a specific supplier change by the outage. The public evidence also does not show that SK hynix halted production because of the March disruption.
What the “two-week clock” meant
The two-week warning came from helium consultant Phil Kornbluth and referred primarily to logistics and qualification. If an interruption lasted beyond roughly two weeks, distributors could need to:
- Reposition liquid-helium containers, cylinders and other cryogenic equipment;
- Find and contract alternative sources;
- Establish new shipping routes and port capacity;
- Verify semiconductor-grade purity and delivery consistency; and
- Revalidate supplier relationships and affected fab processes.
Those steps can take months. The warning was therefore a deadline for reorganizing supply before a temporary outage became a prolonged industrial disruption. It was not evidence that every fab had only 14 days of physical inventory.

Why South Korean production did not immediately stop
Reuters reporting in late March said South Korean chipmakers had enough helium stocks to last at least through June, with sources describing approximately four to six months of inventory. South Korea’s industry minister also said a first-half supply disruption was not expected. TSMC said it did not anticipate a notable impact at that time while continuing to monitor the market.

Inventory figures are not guarantees: they may be supplier or industry estimates, and “months of supply” depends on production rates, recovery efficiency, product mix and allocation decisions. TSMC’s position also should not be read as proof that Taiwan was fully insulated; its contracts, equipment mix and logistics differ from South Korea’s.

What China’s export ban changes
China relies heavily on imports—Reuters cited estimates that imports cover roughly 85% or more of domestic requirements—and Chinese companies have also acted as intermediaries by importing and re-exporting helium. A temporary export ban can therefore reduce flexibility for Asian and European buyers even if China is not the dominant source of mined helium.
The restriction is not automatically a new global crisis. An analyst cited by Reuters said no country was particularly dependent on Chinese imports and described the ban as more likely to tighten supply than to create a major price shock by itself. Existing inventories and long-term contracts can cushion chipmakers, while the effect depends on how long the ban lasts and whether exemptions emerge.

- Superconducting equipment and scientific research;

- Specialized cryogenic and industrial processes.
A fab can sometimes pay more, but bidding up supply can shift costs and availability onto hospitals, laboratories and other users whose applications are also difficult to replace. AP News and Tom’s Hardware describe this broader competition.
How procurement teams should measure risk
The most useful indicators are not headline percentages alone:
- Qualified inventory days: usable stock for each fab and process, not total corporate inventory.
- Approved-source count: how many suppliers are already validated.
- Specification: purity, pressure, flow and contaminant limits.
- Logistics capacity: cylinders, trailers, liquid containers, ports and route reliability.
- Contract terms: take-or-pay, long-term, flexible or spot exposure.
- Recovery rate: how much helium is captured and reused.
- Substitution options: whether a process can change without unacceptable yield risk.
- Allocation rules: which products and fabs receive scarce supply first.
Common mistakes include treating all helium grades as interchangeable, equating national imports with company sourcing, assuming a restart immediately restores exports, and confusing higher procurement costs with an immediate consumer chip shortage.

What to watch next
- Official QatarEnergy announcements on production and export restoration;
- Force-majeure settlements and revised delivery schedules;
- Helium spot and contract prices;
- Inventory guidance from SK hynix and Samsung;
- The duration, exemptions and enforcement of China’s export restriction;
- New capacity or routing from the United States, Russia, Algeria, Canada and other suppliers; and
- Investment in on-site recovery, purification and reliquefaction.
On-site recovery can reduce consumption but requires capital, maintenance, suitable equipment and process validation. Long-term contracts improve security but may reduce flexibility; spot buying is faster but expensive and unreliable; multiple suppliers reduce concentration while increasing qualification work.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Qatar removed roughly one-third of expected global helium availability, but the evidence does not show SK hynix or South Korean fabs facing a literal 14-day countdown. Reported inventories bought months of time, while the real emergency was the logistics and qualification work needed to replace Qatar-linked volumes. China’s July export ban added a second constraint, making helium procurement a continuing geopolitical and operational risk rather than a one-off March scare.
