Akamai announced on October 27, 2020, that it had acquired Dublin-based Asavie, adding technology for managing security, performance and access policies on mobile and internet-connected devices. Akamai planned to fold the services into its Security and Personalization Services (SPS) line and sell them through carrier partners. Its later filings put final purchase consideration at $154.952 million.

What Akamai acquired

Asavie provided a platform to manage security, performance and access policies for mobile and internet-connected devices. Akamai described its services as enabling secure access from those devices to business applications and data without requiring organizations to install and manage client software. Akamai highlighted healthcare, financial services and education as sectors where that clientless approach could be useful.

The acquisition was of all outstanding equity interests in Asavie Technologies Limited, according to Akamai’s later filing. It was a business-software and services acquisition, not a consumer-device purchase.

Why Akamai said it bought Asavie

Akamai framed the deal as a way to address enterprise and mid-market demand for mobile and IoT security and management, support distributed work, and prepare for expected growth in 5G services. CEO and co-founder Tom Leighton said the addition would help carrier partners meet that customer demand. COO Adam Karon described the transaction as part of Akamai’s strategy to pursue the 5G opportunity and expand secure mobile and IoT access and policy management.

Those statements describe Akamai’s rationale at the time of announcement; they do not establish that the anticipated market growth or business results subsequently occurred. Karon’s October 27, 2020, post cited Akamai estimates of more than 650 million corporate-owned mobile and IoT devices in use and said 99% accessed enterprise applications and data over cellular networks. These are historical, company-attributed estimates, not independent or current market measurements. Akamai’s strategy post

How the services were meant to reach customers

Akamai announced an indirect distribution model: Asavie’s solutions would join the SPS product line and be sold to carrier partners, which could embed them in technology bundles for their subscribers. Akamai also described the expansion as extending its Secure Internet Access Services product line into enterprise cellular security. The announcement outlines the intended route to market; it does not establish present-day availability, carrier participation or service terms.

Acquisition timeline and reported price

Date or filing What Akamai reported
October 27, 2020 Akamai announced it had acquired Asavie in an all-cash transaction. It said the deal was not expected to materially affect 2020 financial results or its previously stated 2020 operating-margin goal. Akamai’s announcement
2020 Form 10-K, filed in 2021 Akamai reported paying $155.0 million in cash for all outstanding stock of Asavie Technologies Limited. It described Asavie as a privately funded company headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. Akamai’s 2020 Form 10-K
2022 Form 10-K, filed in 2023 Akamai reported final purchase consideration of $154.952 million and said it finalized the purchase-price allocation in the fourth quarter of 2021. The filing said Asavie had become part of Akamai’s security solutions. Acquired-operation revenue and earnings were included in consolidated statements but not presented separately because they were not material. Akamai’s 2022 Form 10-K

The two amounts reflect different reporting stages: the 2020 Form 10-K gives the rounded cash figure, while the 2022 Form 10-K records final consideration after purchase-price allocation. The announcement date is October 27, 2020; the later filing dates are not the transaction date.

What the later record establishes—and what it does not

Akamai’s 2022 Form 10-K establishes that Asavie had been incorporated into Akamai’s security solutions and that its operating results were included in consolidated reporting. Because the company did not report those results separately as material, the filing does not provide a standalone measure of Asavie’s subsequent revenue or earnings. The cited acquisition materials also do not confirm which specific services or carrier bundles remain available today.

Akamai’s announcement quoted Asavie CEO Ralph Shaw describing the software as designed to let enterprises provide access to business resources while protecting against evolving cyber threats targeting mobile devices, users and applications. That quote explains Asavie’s intended product role, rather than independently demonstrating security outcomes.
