International Holding Company (IHC) of Abu Dhabi did put an artificial-intelligence system into its board process—but not as a voting director. On February 26, 2024, the diversified investment group announced Aiden Insight as an AI “Board Observer,” developed by G42 in collaboration with Microsoft. IHC’s later disclosures record a first board-meeting appearance in May 2024 and an upgraded, locally hosted Aiden Insight 2.0 in 2025.
What IHC actually announced
IHC, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, is a diversified holding and investment company that the company and contemporary coverage described as the UAE’s largest publicly traded entity. Its announcement named Aiden Insight as an artificial-intelligence Board Observer intended to attend board proceedings and support strategic decisions.
The original announcement is available in IHC’s February 26, 2024 press release. Headlines saying that an “AI bot joined the board” capture the novelty but blur an important legal distinction: public descriptions present Aiden as an analytical observer, not a human-equivalent director.
What “board observer” means
A board observer generally monitors meetings and supplies information or advice. The title does not, by itself, make the observer a director. IHC’s public materials describe Aiden in terms of observation, insights, risk assessments and strategic-planning support; they do not establish it as a legal person, statutory director or fiduciary.

That means readers should not infer that Aiden could vote on resolutions, approve a transaction, sign documents or assume directors’ legal responsibilities. The company has not publicly supplied a complete observer agreement, board charter, access-control policy or legal opinion, so the precise contractual rights and limitations remain undisclosed. The safest description is a non-voting decision-support system used in the boardroom.
What Aiden was designed to do
IHC said the system would continuously process and analyse large volumes of information, including:
- Decades of internal business data
- Financial information
- Market trends and global economic indicators
- Inputs used for risk assessment and opportunity identification
Its intended outputs included actionable insights, predictive analysis and recommendations for strategic planning and oversight. Those are capabilities claimed by IHC and its technology partners. Public materials do not provide independent accuracy tests, adoption statistics or evidence that Aiden improved returns, prevented losses or shortened decision times.
Who built and powered the system?
G42, the UAE-based artificial-intelligence company, was identified as the principal developer, working in collaboration with Microsoft. G42 later described the broader product as BoardNavigator, with IHC as its first adopting organisation and Aiden Insight as IHC’s name for the deployment. G42’s account is published by PR Newswire.

Microsoft’s Azure security, privacy and compliance features were cited in that announcement. The public record does not show that Microsoft independently designed Aiden or that Aiden was simply an off-the-shelf Microsoft product.
Did Aiden really attend a board meeting?
Yes. IHC’s 2024 Corporate Governance Report records Aiden’s first participation in an IHC board meeting on May 6, 2024. The report says it analysed decades of data and supplied actionable and predictive analyses intended to support leadership decisions, risk management and opportunity identification.
This is an internal company disclosure, not an independent assessment of the quality or correctness of the analyses. The date and description appear in IHC’s 2024 annual report.
How the project evolved into Aiden Insight 2.0
IHC’s later announcements show that the project continued beyond the 2024 launch. In 2025, the company introduced Aiden Insight 2.0, developed with Aleria and described as a locally hosted, on-premises AI Board Observer operating in the UAE.

The 2.0 announcement lists real-time news and market updates, live financial and operational dashboards, portfolio analysis across subsidiaries and sectors, and an “AskIHC” conversational query tool for board members. It also describes more detailed risk and regulatory analysis. IHC says local operation gives it greater control over sensitive corporate information and reduces reliance on external cloud services. The feature description appears in the company’s Aiden Insight 2.0 announcement.
What the upgraded system reportedly recommended
In that 2025 announcement, IHC said Aiden reviewed first-quarter 2025 results and produced recommendations concerning:
- Tax planning and group structure
- Stronger strategic focus on information technology and AI
- Capital-allocation discipline
- Continued attention to technology and energy market exposures
- Embedding AI analysis more deeply in governance processes
IHC cited first-quarter revenue of AED 27.2 billion and net profit of AED 4.1 billion in the same context. Those figures are company-reported financial results; the available material does not establish that Aiden caused them or that its recommendations were superior to human analysis.
Why an investment group might use an AI board observer
A diversified holding company can have thousands of entities, projects and data streams. An AI layer may help directors search across that information continuously rather than wait for manually prepared reports. Potential practical benefits include:

These are reasons the architecture could be useful, not proof that it has delivered better investment performance.

Directors remain accountable
Using an AI recommendation does not transfer responsibility from the board. Human directors still have to test assumptions, challenge the output and make the decision under the company’s applicable governance and legal framework.
Data quality can undermine confident answers
Incomplete, stale or inconsistently defined data from subsidiaries can produce misleading comparisons. A fluent explanation is not evidence that the underlying numbers or relationships are correct.
Model error and automation bias are persistent risks
An AI system can hallucinate, infer unsupported relationships or encourage directors to give excessive weight to a seemingly objective score. A credible board workflow needs review by subject-matter experts, not automatic acceptance.

Confidentiality and cyber risk increase with centralisation
A board-level system may aggregate sensitive financial, strategic and market information, making it an attractive target. On-premises hosting can improve data control and residency, but it still requires patching, identity management, monitoring, backups and incident response.
Explainability and audit trails matter
For a recommendation to be governable, directors should be able to identify the data, assumptions and model version behind it, as well as the question asked, the human decision taken and any later correction. IHC has not publicly released independent security reviews, accuracy benchmarks or a full audit protocol for Aiden.
What remains unknown
- How often Aiden’s recommendations were accepted, rejected or changed by directors
- Accuracy or error rates under live operating conditions
- Whether the system reduced meeting preparation time or changed investment outcomes
- The formal legal terms, access permissions and liability allocation for the observer role
- Independent evaluations of its cybersecurity, model governance or data controls
Why the announcement matters
Aiden is a conspicuous example of AI being integrated into senior corporate governance rather than confined to customer service or back-office automation. It also reflects Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s effort to build AI infrastructure and locally controlled technology.
The more durable lesson is not that a machine now governs IHC. It is that a large investment group is testing AI as a persistent analytical layer for human directors, then moving that layer toward local hosting, real-time information and portfolio-wide workflows.

Bottom line: IHC appointed Aiden Insight as a non-voting AI board observer, not as a corporate director. The system was launched with G42 and Microsoft, first appeared in an IHC board meeting on May 6, 2024, and evolved into the locally hosted Aiden Insight 2.0 with Aleria in 2025.
