Tickmill and Exness are both mainly leveraged CFD brokers, but they appeal to different kinds of traders. Tickmill is more narrowly focused on forex and other major CFD markets, with a simple account structure and a strong emphasis on execution costs. Exness offers a broader platform ecosystem, more account choices, and—depending on the client’s country—features such as very high leverage and flexible funding.
The better broker depends on the exact legal entity available to you. Spreads, leverage, payment methods, investor protection, and even the instruments you can trade may change by country. Treat the comparison below as a framework, then confirm the terms shown during registration.
Tickmill vs. Exness at a glance
| Feature | Tickmill | Exness |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Forex and conventional CFDs | Forex and a broader selection of leveraged CFDs |
| Platforms | MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and web/mobile access, subject to entity | MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, Exness Terminal and Exness Trade, subject to country |
| Typical account choice | Classic and Raw-style accounts, with local variations | Standard, Standard Cent and professional accounts such as Pro, Zero and Raw Spread |
| Pricing model | Either spread-based pricing or low-spread commission pricing | Spread-only and commission-based accounts |
| Best suited to | Forex traders who want a relatively straightforward cost comparison | Traders wanting more account, platform and funding flexibility |
| U.S. availability | Generally unavailable to U.S. retail clients | Does not generally accept U.S. residents |
Neither broker is a bank or a long-term investment platform. Most products are CFDs or other leveraged derivatives. Buying a stock CFD does not give you ownership of the underlying company, voting rights or the same rights as buying shares through a conventional investment account.
Regulation and client protection
Both brands operate through multiple companies rather than one global legal entity. That distinction matters more than the brand name on the website.

Tickmill has operated through regulated entities in jurisdictions including the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Seychelles and South Africa. Exness also operates through several international entities, including entities in jurisdictions such as Cyprus, the United Kingdom, Seychelles, South Africa and other offshore or regional locations. The entity available to you is normally determined by your country of residence.
A regulated entity may provide safeguards such as segregated client money, negative-balance protection or access to a compensation scheme. Those safeguards are not identical across jurisdictions. For example, a client onboarded by an offshore entity should not assume that the protections associated with a UK or EU entity apply to that account.
What to check before depositing
- Open the broker’s legal or regulatory page.
- Identify the exact company named in the account agreement.
- Check that company in the regulator’s public register, rather than relying only on a logo.
- Read the client agreement for negative-balance protection, dispute handling and withdrawal rules.
- Confirm whether the account is retail or professional, since professional status can change leverage and protections.
Neither broker should be described simply as “safe” without this entity-level check. Regulation reduces some operational and counterparty risks; it does not prevent trading losses.
Markets and products
Tickmill is a conventional CFD broker. Its offering commonly includes currency pairs, precious metals, stock indices, energies and selected stock or bond CFDs, depending on the entity and platform. It is a natural fit for someone whose watchlist is mainly EUR/USD, GBP/USD, gold, oil and major equity indices.
Exness also focuses on forex and CFDs, but its product menu is often broader by region. Clients may find currency pairs, metals, energies, stock CFDs, indices and cryptocurrency CFDs. Availability, trading hours and contract specifications can differ between account types and jurisdictions.
For both brokers, check the symbol specification before trading. The important details include:
- contract size and minimum trade volume;
- typical and minimum spreads;
- commission per lot or per transaction;
- overnight financing or swap;
- margin requirements and leverage limits;
- market hours and rules around corporate actions;
- whether the instrument is available on MT4, MT5 or the broker’s own platform.
Neither broker is a substitute for a share-dealing account if your objective is to own diversified investments for years. CFDs can be useful for short-term speculation or hedging, but financing costs and leverage make them unsuitable for many long-term savers.

Trading platforms
Tickmill
Tickmill’s main proposition is familiar MetaTrader access. MT4 remains popular for forex traders and older expert advisers, while MT5 adds more markets and generally more modern order and analytical features. Web and mobile versions are convenient for monitoring positions, although serious strategy testing is usually easier on desktop.
The advantage is familiarity: a trader moving from another MetaTrader broker will not need to learn a completely new charting environment. The disadvantage is that the experience is less vertically integrated than Exness’s proprietary tools.
Exness
Exness offers MT4 and MT5 alongside browser-based and mobile tools. Exness Terminal is designed for trading in a browser without installing MetaTrader, while Exness Trade provides account and trading functions on mobile for supported accounts.
This can make Exness more convenient for occasional traders who want to switch between phone, browser and desktop. MetaTrader users still need to confirm whether a particular account is MT4 or MT5: an MT4 account cannot automatically be traded through an MT5-only application.
For algorithmic traders, the key question is not which broker has the flashier app. Check whether your expert adviser supports MT4 or MT5, whether virtual hosting is available, and whether the broker’s execution and symbol suffixes are compatible with your software.
Accounts, deposits and minimums
Tickmill commonly separates its simpler spread-based account from its Raw account. The spread-based version is easier for a beginner to understand because the trading cost is mostly built into the spread. The Raw version generally offers tighter spreads with a separate commission.
Exness offers a wider range of account labels, including Standard and professional-style accounts such as Pro, Zero and Raw Spread. A Standard account is usually the simplest starting point. The professional accounts can be more appropriate for experienced traders comparing raw spreads and commission, but their minimum deposit and eligibility requirements vary by country.

Marketing pages often show a headline minimum deposit that does not apply universally. The operative amount is the one displayed in the account-opening flow or client area after your country and payment method are selected.
Before choosing either broker, calculate the full cost of a normal trade:
Recommended Free Tools
Total cost = spread cost + commission + expected overnight financing + conversion or payment fees
A low advertised spread does not necessarily produce the lowest cost. A Raw account with commission may be cheaper for a high-volume intraday trader, while a spread-only account may be simpler for someone placing occasional small trades.
Spreads, commission and overnight costs
Tickmill is often considered competitive for traders who compare raw-spread accounts. Its Classic-style pricing is simpler, while its Raw-style pricing is designed for traders who prefer a visible commission in exchange for tighter spreads.
Exness provides a similar choice. Standard and Pro-style accounts generally build more of the cost into the spread, while Zero and Raw Spread accounts use low spreads with commission. The actual cost depends on the instrument, market conditions, account currency and legal entity.
Do not read “zero spread” as “zero cost.” A zero-spread account may still charge commission, and the quoted spread can widen during news, market open, rollovers and periods of low liquidity.

Leverage and risk
Both brokers may offer high leverage outside stricter retail regimes. The maximum is not necessarily available on every instrument or account. Regulators may impose retail leverage caps, and brokers can reduce leverage around major economic announcements, weekends or periods of unusual volatility.
Exness is more prominently associated with very high or “unlimited” leverage in some jurisdictions. That feature is conditional and does not make a trade safer. At high leverage, a small price movement can consume a large portion of the account’s equity.
Tickmill’s leverage also depends on the client’s entity, account classification and instrument. It should be treated as a risk setting, not a product benefit.

A practical control is to size the position from the stop-loss distance rather than from the maximum leverage offered. For example, a trader risking $20 on a $1,000 account should choose a position whose planned stop-loss loss—including spread and commission—is close to $20. The broker’s margin calculator can then show whether the required margin is available.
Deposits and withdrawals
Exness is known for offering a broad selection of local payment methods in many markets, with processing options shown inside the Personal Area. Tickmill also supports common card, bank-transfer and electronic-payment methods, but the available list is more dependent on the client’s country and entity.
For either broker:
- Use a payment account in your own name.
- Check the minimum and maximum amount before submitting the transaction.
- Keep proof of payment and source-of-funds documents.
- Allow for the bank or e-wallet’s processing time even when the broker marks a transaction as processed.
- Do not assume a deposit method can always be used for withdrawal.
A common avoidable problem is depositing from a spouse’s, friend’s or business account and then discovering that the broker cannot return funds to that third party. A second is making a cryptocurrency transfer on the wrong network. Confirm the network and destination address before sending; a mistaken blockchain transfer may be irreversible.
Which broker is better for different traders?
| If your priority is… | More suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional forex trading | Either; slight edge to Tickmill for simplicity | Both offer MetaTrader and competitive forex-focused pricing; compare the actual account quotes. |
| Many account structures and flexible tools | Exness | It generally offers a broader account and proprietary-platform ecosystem. |
| Raw-spread cost comparison | Tickmill or Exness | Both offer commission-based structures; the cheaper choice depends on pair, volume and entity. |
| MT4 expert advisers | Either | Confirm the exact server, symbol names and account compatibility before migrating. |
| Simple occasional trading | Tickmill Classic or Exness Standard | Spread-only pricing is easier to understand, though not always cheapest. |
| Mobile and browser convenience | Exness | Its proprietary browser and mobile tools may reduce reliance on a desktop terminal. |
| Long-term stock ownership | Neither | Use a regulated investment platform that offers real shares or funds if ownership is the goal. |
How to make the final choice
- Confirm that the broker accepts residents of your country.
- Write down the legal entity and regulator shown in the registration process.
- Compare the same instrument—for example, EUR/USD or gold—on the same account type.
- Estimate the round-trip cost using your expected trade size, not the headline minimum spread.
- Check overnight financing for the positions you expect to hold.
- Test a small deposit and withdrawal before committing a larger balance.
- Open a demo account and verify that your platform, indicators or expert adviser work as expected.
FAQ
Is Tickmill cheaper than Exness?
Not universally. Tickmill and Exness both offer spread-based and commission-based pricing. The cheaper broker depends on the account, instrument, trade size, holding period, currency conversion and the entity serving you. Compare the complete round-trip cost rather than the minimum spread.

Is Exness safer than Tickmill?
Neither brand is automatically safer for every client. Both operate through different legal entities with different regulators and protections. Identify the company named in your account agreement and verify its rules, negative-balance policy and dispute process.
Can U.S. residents use Tickmill or Exness?
Both generally do not accept U.S. retail clients. Availability is country-specific, so residents should not assume that a website, currency pair or index being visible online means they are eligible to open an account.
Which is better for beginners, Tickmill or Exness?
Either can be easier to start with through a spread-based account and a demo account. Exness may be more convenient for browser and mobile use, while Tickmill’s simpler account lineup may make costs easier to compare. Neither removes the risks of leveraged CFDs.
Does Tickmill offer MT4 and MT5?
Tickmill commonly supports both MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, but platform availability can vary by entity and account. Check the current account-opening page before transferring an expert adviser or indicator.
Does Exness offer zero-cost trading?
No. Exness may offer accounts with zero or near-zero spreads on some instruments and conditions, but commission, overnight financing, wider spreads during volatile periods and other charges may still apply.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Tickmill is the better fit if you want a conventional forex and CFD broker with a relatively focused product range and a straightforward choice between spread-based and raw-spread pricing. Exness is the better fit if you value a wider account selection, proprietary web and mobile tools, and more flexible trading and funding features.
For most readers, the final decision should be made from the live terms offered after entering your country of residence. Compare the exact legal entity, account type, spread, commission, swap, leverage and withdrawal rules. Do not choose either broker solely because of an “unlimited leverage,” “zero spread” or lowest-deposit headline.
