Scandinavian capital markets offer international investors access to three distinct economies, currencies and market infrastructures: Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The opportunity is broader than a single “Nordic exchange,” but so are the practical complications. Oslo is operated by Euronext, not Nasdaq Nordic; Sweden uses Euroclear Sweden for central securities depository services, while Denmark and Norway use Euronext Securities; and growth markets such as First North and Euronext Growth Oslo are not regulated markets in the same sense as the main exchanges.
For a personal investor, the important questions are not only which companies are listed. They include where a trade executes, which currency creates the foreign-exchange exposure, how the security settles, what tax rules apply and whether an index actually includes Norway.
What counts as Scandinavia?
In the strict geographical and financial-market sense, Scandinavia means Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The wider Nordic market also includes Finland and Iceland, and Nasdaq Nordic commonly refers to the Nasdaq-operated exchanges in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Iceland.
That distinction matters. Oslo Børs is not a Nasdaq Nordic exchange. It is operated by Euronext. Nasdaq provides a common trading system, membership arrangements and market framework across its Nordic and Baltic venues, but the individual exchanges remain separately licensed markets.

How the market structure affects investors
The market’s structure is more than a technical detail. It can affect the products available through a broker, the currency of a purchase, settlement arrangements, corporate-action processing and the information an investor must review.
- Trading venue: the exchange or market where the order is matched.
- Listing currency: usually DKK, SEK, NOK or EUR, depending on the security and listing.
- Clearing: the process that manages obligations between buyers and sellers, where a central counterparty is used.
- CSD: the securities depository where ownership and settlement records are maintained.
- Broker and custodian: the intermediary through which an individual investor accesses the market.
- Tax treatment: including dividend withholding, reclaim procedures and the investor’s own tax residence.
A broker may give the impression that a single platform provides seamless access to all Scandinavian securities. That may be true at the order-entry level, but it does not create one common settlement or tax system.
Denmark: Nasdaq Copenhagen
Nasdaq Copenhagen is Denmark’s regulated stock exchange. It supports equities, bonds, funds, exchange-traded products, derivatives and other securities. Danish listed-company exposure is often associated with pharmaceuticals, shipping, industrial businesses, financial companies and consumer firms, although the actual sector balance depends on the index or company list being examined.
An investor buying a Danish share normally needs to consider DKK exposure, even where the company earns revenue in many countries. A company’s international operations do not automatically remove the currency risk created by owning a security priced in Danish kroner. The investor’s return is affected by both the share price and the DKK exchange rate relative to their home currency.

Sweden: Nasdaq Stockholm and a wider venue choice
Nasdaq Stockholm is Sweden’s main regulated equity market. Swedish investors and companies also use Nasdaq First North Growth Market Sweden and the separate Nordic Growth Market, commonly known as NGM.
Sweden’s market is notable for its broad listed-company and growth-market ecosystem. That breadth can provide more choice, but smaller companies and alternative-market listings can also involve lower liquidity, wider bid-ask spreads and greater price volatility.
Sweden uses Euroclear Sweden as its national CSD. Euroclear Sweden records and settles securities and related cash for shares and bonds traded on Stockholm and other marketplaces. This means that a Nasdaq trading relationship should not be confused with a common Nasdaq settlement system.

Swedish securities firms require authorisation under the Swedish Securities Market Act. Finansinspektionen supervises securities firms, fund managers and financial-market infrastructure, and oversees authorisation, sanctions and market-risk analysis.
Norway: Euronext Oslo Børs
Norway’s principal exchange is Euronext Oslo Børs, operated by Euronext. It is particularly important for energy, shipping, offshore services, seafood and related industries. The Oslo market also supports equities, bonds, exchange-traded funds, derivatives, exchange-traded notes, warrants and funds.
Euronext identifies Oslo as Norway’s only regulated securities-market venue and says its Oslo markets use a single order book with access to approximately 180 brokers. The venue structure includes:
| Venue | Classification and purpose |
|---|---|
| Euronext Oslo Børs | Regulated main market |
| Euronext Expand Oslo | Regulated market segment intended to facilitate access for issuers that do not meet all main-market requirements |
| Euronext Growth Oslo | MTF for growth companies |
| Nordic ABM | Exchange-regulated bond market, not a regulated market in the same classification as Oslo Børs |
The former names Oslo Axess and Merkur Market are outdated. They are now Euronext Expand Oslo and Euronext Growth Oslo respectively.
Norway uses Euronext Securities Oslo, its only central securities depository. Norwegian securities therefore combine a different exchange operator and post-trade infrastructure from Sweden, even though investors may access both markets through a similar international brokerage interface.
Regulated markets versus growth markets
This is one of the most important distinctions for a retail investor. Nasdaq First North is an MTF, or multilateral trading facility, rather than a regulated market. Its equity segment is registered as an SME Growth Market under MiFID II. Euronext Growth Oslo is also an MTF.
A growth-market listing may offer a smaller or younger company a less demanding route to public trading. In return, investors may face differences in admission standards, reporting requirements, liquidity, analyst coverage and investor protections compared with a main-market listing.

Do not assume that every stock shown in a broker’s “exchange” menu has passed the same admission and disclosure requirements. Before investing, check the venue on the company’s investor-relations page and read the relevant exchange rulebook or admission document.

What the 2025 Nasdaq figures do—and do not—show
Nasdaq reported the following full-year 2025 statistics for its combined Nordic and Baltic markets:

| New listings | 42 companies | 46 in 2024 |

These figures should not be quoted as statistics for Scandinavia alone. They include Finland, Iceland and the Baltic markets within Nasdaq’s reporting scope, and they do not describe Oslo Børs.
Fixed-income investing in Scandinavia
Scandinavian capital markets are not just equity markets. Fixed-income products include government bonds and treasury bills, covered bonds, bank debt, investment-grade and high-yield corporate bonds, commercial paper, certificates, green bonds and sustainability-linked bonds.
Bond trading can work differently from share trading. Some corporate bonds are listed, but distribution and secondary trading also occur through dealer and over-the-counter markets. A retail investor should check whether their broker offers a live order book, an indicative price or only an order-request service.
An industry-produced 2025 Nordic Corporate Bond Market Report stated that green bonds represented 30% of the Nordic corporate-bond market and that new green-bond issuance was approximately €12.5 billion in both 2024 and 2025. Because that report is industry-produced rather than an official government statistical release, its figures should be treated in that context.
Swedish official statistics provide a different measurement: green securities represented 9.6% of total Swedish interest-bearing securities debt, compared with 5.3% in January 2022. That figure covers Swedish interest-bearing securities debt and is not directly comparable with the Nordic corporate-bond market-share estimate.
Regulation, disclosure and investor protection
Denmark and Sweden apply EU capital-markets rules through national law and supervision. Norway is not an EU member. It is an EEA EFTA state and incorporates relevant EU financial-services legislation through the EEA Agreement. MiFID and MiFIR are part of that EEA financial-services framework, but implementation and supervision remain national.
Important regimes include:
- MiFID II and MiFIR for investment services and trading venues.
- Market Abuse Regulation for inside information, market manipulation and related conduct.
- Prospectus Regulation for public offers and admission to regulated markets.
- Central Securities Depositories Regulation and settlement rules.
- European Market Infrastructure Regulation for derivatives clearing and reporting.
- Sustainable-finance disclosure and taxonomy requirements.
| Country | National supervisor |
|---|---|
| Denmark | Finanstilsynet |
| Sweden | Finansinspektionen |
| Norway | Finanstilsynet |
In Norway, supervisory responsibility changed on April 1, 2025. Finanstilsynet became responsible for takeover bids, disclosure of inside information and delayed disclosure, buy-backs and price stabilisation. Euronext Oslo Børs continues to operate the relevant markets, but those supervisory functions moved to the national regulator.

The EU Prospectus Regulation generally applies to public offers and admissions to trading on regulated markets, but it does not apply identically to every private placement or growth-market admission. The venue classification and structure of the transaction matter.
A prospectus is intended to give investors material information about the issuer’s assets, liabilities, financial position, prospects, the rights attached to the securities and the reasons for the issue. For a first public offer of a share class being admitted to a regulated market for the first time, the approved prospectus must generally be available at least three working days before the end of the offer.
The EU Listing Act package—Regulation (EU) 2024/2809 and Directives (EU) 2024/2810 and 2024/2811—changes parts of the Prospectus Regulation, Market Abuse Regulation and MiFID/MiFIR framework and introduces rules concerning multiple-vote share structures. It does not make admission requirements identical across Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Exchange rulebooks, company law, takeover rules and national procedures still matter.
Currency and sector risk
Strict Scandinavia has three local currencies:
- Denmark: Danish krone, DKK.
- Sweden: Swedish krona, SEK.
- Norway: Norwegian krone, NOK.
A foreign investor can therefore be right about a company and still receive a disappointing home-currency return. For example, a 10% gain in a SEK-priced share can be largely offset if the krona falls 8% against the investor’s home currency. The exact outcome depends on the exchange rate, fees, dividends and tax.

Sector concentration is another consideration. Sweden offers a relatively broad listed-company universe; Denmark has significant pharmaceutical, industrial and shipping exposure; and Norway has especially visible energy, shipping, seafood and offshore representation. These are useful starting points, not substitutes for checking the current holdings and sector weights of an index or fund.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How international investors can approach the region
Most individual investors will use one of three routes:
- A diversified fund or ETF: often simpler for spreading company-specific risk, but check the index methodology, fees, domicile, currency and whether Norway is included.
- Direct shares: provide precise exposure but require decisions about local markets, currencies, withholding tax, liquidity and corporate actions.
- Local or international broker access: can offer wider venue coverage, but execution, custody and data fees may differ by country.
Before placing an order, use this checklist:
- Confirm the company’s actual listing venue—not merely the trading symbol shown by the broker.
- Check the trading currency and whether the broker offers currency conversion or a foreign-exchange facility.
- Review the bid-ask spread and typical trading volume, particularly for First North, Euronext Growth Oslo or smaller bonds.
- Find out how dividends, stock splits, rights issues and other corporate actions are processed.
- Ask which CSD and custodian hold the position.
- Check dividend withholding tax and whether your broker supports reclaims under the applicable tax treaty.
- Compare the fund or index methodology if using an ETF. Confirm its administrator, exchange coverage, currency, return type and rebalancing schedule.
Indices: check the definition before investing
“Nordic index” is not a complete description. An investor should identify the administrator, eligible exchanges, currency, free-float and liquidity rules, rebalancing schedule and whether the index is calculated as price return, gross total return or net total return.
The OMX Nordic 40 is associated with Nasdaq’s Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Iceland markets. It should not automatically be described as a complete Scandinavian benchmark because it does not automatically represent Oslo Børs. A fund labelled Nordic may include Norway, but only its published methodology can confirm that.

Advantages and risks for personal investors
| Potential advantages | Risks and limitations |
|---|---|
| Exposure to established companies and specialised industries | Three local currencies and additional foreign-exchange risk |
| Access to developed equity, bond and derivatives markets | Different exchanges, CSDs, tax rules and settlement processes |
| Strong choice of funds, shares and listed products through many brokers | Small-cap and growth-market securities may be illiquid |
| Growth in labelled and green-bond issuance | Sector concentration can make a country or index cyclical |
| Common Nasdaq membership arrangements across several markets | Common access does not mean one exchange or one investor-protection regime |
The biggest practical mistake is treating market access as market uniformity. A broker may connect an investor to several venues through one screen, while the underlying currencies, listing standards, settlement systems and tax treatment remain different.
FAQ
Are Scandinavian and Nordic capital markets the same thing?
No. Strict Scandinavia means Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Nordic markets also include Finland and Iceland, and Nasdaq Nordic commonly covers Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Iceland. Oslo is operated by Euronext.
Is Oslo Børs part of Nasdaq Nordic?
No. Oslo Børs is operated by Euronext. Nasdaq-related Norwegian trading lists may exist, but that does not make Oslo Børs part of Nasdaq Nordic.
Is Nasdaq First North a regulated stock exchange?
No. First North is an MTF, or multilateral trading facility. Its equity segment is registered as an SME Growth Market under MiFID II. Its admission, disclosure and risk profile differ from a main regulated market.
Which currencies are used in Scandinavia’s stock markets?
The principal local currencies are DKK in Denmark, SEK in Sweden and NOK in Norway. Funds and individual listings may also use EUR or another currency, so investors should check the specific instrument.
Which central securities depositories serve Scandinavia?
Denmark uses Euronext Securities Copenhagen, Norway uses Euronext Securities Oslo and Sweden uses Euroclear Sweden. A common trading platform does not mean that all securities settle through one CSD.
Does a Nordic index always include Norway?
No. Index coverage varies. The OMX Nordic 40 is associated with Nasdaq’s Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Iceland markets and does not automatically represent Oslo Børs. Read the index methodology before investing.
What are the main risks of investing in Scandinavian markets?
Key risks include share-price volatility, foreign-exchange movements, sector concentration, lower liquidity in smaller companies, brokerage and custody costs, dividend withholding tax, and differences between regulated main markets and MTFs.

The Bottom Line
Scandinavian capital markets provide useful diversification, but they are not one exchange and should not be approached as one uniform market. Denmark and Sweden are centred on Nasdaq-operated markets, Norway on Euronext Oslo Børs. The three countries use DKK, SEK and NOK, and their post-trade systems differ materially.
For most personal investors, a diversified fund can be the simplest route, provided its methodology genuinely matches the intended exposure. Investors selecting individual shares or bonds should verify the venue, currency, liquidity, CSD, tax treatment and disclosure obligations before trading. The distinction between a regulated main market and an MTF is especially important when assessing smaller growth companies.
