It is a long-established electronic broker used by individual investors, professional traders, funds, and institutions. The company operates through different legal entities depending on where you live, so the regulator, investor-protection scheme, available products, and account rules are determined by your country of residence.
That legitimacy does not make IBKR risk-free or automatically suitable for beginners. Its pricing can be very competitive, especially for international trading and currency conversion, but the platform is more complicated than many consumer-focused broker apps. Delayed withdrawals, account verification requests, margin liquidations, rejected deposits, and confusing permissions can make a genuine brokerage look suspicious to an inexperienced user.
What Interactive Brokers actually is
Interactive Brokers Group operates a collection of brokerage businesses rather than one universal account provider. Common entities include Interactive Brokers LLC in the United States, Interactive Brokers Canada Inc. in Canada, Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited in the United Kingdom, and regulated affiliates in other jurisdictions.
When you open an account, your agreement is with the entity serving your country. That distinction matters. A U.S. customer may fall under U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority rules, while a Canadian customer deals with the Canadian subsidiary and its applicable Canadian regulatory framework. Do not assume that a protection advertised on the U.S. website applies to an account held elsewhere.

IBKR is a broker and custodian. It does not promise investment returns, protect you from a falling share price, or guarantee that every order will fill at the displayed price.
Is Interactive Brokers regulated?
Yes. Interactive Brokers’ subsidiaries are regulated in the jurisdictions where they operate. In the United States, Interactive Brokers LLC is a registered broker-dealer and investment adviser, a member of FINRA and the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), and supervised by the SEC. Other subsidiaries are regulated by their local financial authorities.
The practical check is the legal entity shown in your account agreement and statements—not just the “Interactive Brokers” brand. You can verify the entity through the relevant regulator’s public register. A legitimate regulator listing confirms registration; it does not guarantee profits or prevent trading losses.
What happens if IBKR fails?
Customer assets are generally held separately from the broker’s own operating assets, subject to the rules in the relevant jurisdiction. Investor compensation schemes may protect eligible customer property if a regulated broker becomes insolvent and assets are missing. They do not cover market losses, poor investment decisions, margin losses, or a stock that declines in value.
For example, eligible U.S. brokerage accounts may receive SIPC protection up to applicable statutory limits, including a cash sub-limit. The exact limits and exclusions matter, and SIPC is not the same as FDIC deposit insurance. Canadian and U.K. accounts are governed by different protection systems. Read the disclosures attached to your specific account before relying on a headline protection number.
Cash is also not interchangeable with securities. Uninvested cash may be held in a bank deposit, sweep arrangement, or other structure depending on the account and jurisdiction. Cryptocurrency, futures, forex, CFDs, and other products may have separate protections or none at all.
Fees: low headline commissions, but not cost-free
IBKR is known for low trading costs, but the final charge depends on the product, exchange, pricing plan, account entity, and order size. Common costs can include:

IBKR generally does not rely on a traditional inactivity fee for ordinary accounts, but that should not be confused with an account that has no possible charges. A trade can incur regulatory, exchange, clearing, borrowing, or data fees even when the advertised commission is zero.
Why currency conversion is one of IBKR’s strengths
Many brokers make international investing expensive by embedding a large foreign-exchange markup in the conversion rate. IBKR is often attractive to investors who regularly convert currencies because it typically provides institutional-style FX execution with a separate, comparatively small commission.
That advantage has limits. Converting currency for a purpose unrelated to investing may be restricted by the account agreement, and a very small conversion can be uneconomic because of minimum charges. Always preview the estimated commission and inspect the trade confirmation. If you are buying one U.S. stock once a year, the administrative complexity may outweigh the savings.
Margin is the biggest danger for inexperienced users
IBKR offers margin accounts, short selling, options, futures, forex, and other leveraged products. These features can create losses larger than the cash deposited. The broker can liquidate positions without waiting for your permission if the account falls below its maintenance requirements.
A margin call is not necessarily a request that gives you several days to add funds. In a fast market, IBKR’s risk system may sell securities automatically. A forced sale can happen at an unfavorable price and may leave a remaining debt.
If you do not need borrowing or advanced products, use a cash account where available and avoid requesting permissions for options, futures, short selling, or forex. “Approved” does not mean “safe”; it means the account passed the broker’s eligibility checks.
Why legitimate customers sometimes think IBKR is a scam
Withdrawals can be delayed
Brokerages routinely hold funds to allow deposits to clear, verify the source of money, and comply with anti-money-laundering rules. A deposit that appears in the account may not yet be available for withdrawal. Proceeds from a sale may also need to settle before they can be sent to your bank.

Common causes of delay include a recently added bank account, a deposit made by somebody other than the account holder, mismatched names, an unsupported payment method, or a request to withdraw to a different bank than the one used for funding.
Identity and source-of-funds checks are normal
IBKR may request government identification, proof of address, tax information, employment details, or documentation explaining the source of funds. These requests can feel intrusive, but regulated brokers are required to perform customer-identification and anti-money-laundering checks.
Upload documents only through the secure Client Portal or official app. Do not email a passport or send money to a person claiming to be an “IBKR agent.”
Account restrictions can be difficult to understand
A broker may restrict an account while it reviews identity, suspicious activity, a deposit, a corporate action, a trading permission, or a regulatory issue. Support may not disclose every detail if doing so would compromise an investigation or violate legal requirements. That is frustrating, but it is not by itself evidence of theft.
The platform is complicated
IBKR has several interfaces, including the Client Portal, Trader Workstation (TWS), IBKR Mobile, and simplified web trading tools. A user can mistakenly select the wrong exchange, order type, currency, or account segment. A market order can fill at a price different from the quote, while a limit order can remain unfilled indefinitely.
How to use IBKR more safely
- Confirm the entity. Open the account agreement and identify the Interactive Brokers subsidiary holding your account.
- Start with a cash account. Do not enable margin unless you understand maintenance requirements and forced liquidation.
- Use limit orders when price control matters. A limit order may not execute, but it avoids accepting any available price.
- Fund from an account in your own name. Third-party deposits are a common source of review and rejection.
- Test a small withdrawal. Before transferring a large portfolio, verify that your bank details and withdrawal process work.
- Secure the account. Use two-factor authentication, a unique password, device updates, and account alerts.
- Read the trade confirmation. Check commission, currency, quantity, average price, and exchange before assuming a trade was free or filled as intended.
IBKR’s main advantages

- Strong tools for options, futures, bonds, short selling, and professional-style order handling.

- The interface can be overwhelming for a first-time investor.

- Customer support may be slower or less personal than at a simple app-based broker.
- Some markets, data feeds, order types, and account features vary by residence.
- Low commissions do not remove FX, exchange, regulatory, borrowing, or data costs.
- Funds can be temporarily restricted during verification or compliance reviews.
How to complain or report a suspected scam
For an ordinary service problem, contact IBKR through the secure Client Portal message system or the contact details shown on its official website. Keep the ticket number, screenshots, statements, deposit records, and a timeline of events.

If IBKR does not resolve a formal complaint, the escalation route depends on the legal entity and country. It may involve the firm’s complaints department, a securities regulator, an ombudsman, FINRA arbitration or complaint channels in the United States, or the relevant investor-compensation body. Investor protection is strongest when you deal only with the official broker and preserve clear records.
