Short answer: IC Markets is usually the stronger fit for active forex traders who want tight raw spreads, cTrader or MetaTrader automation, and a transparent commission-based account. FxPro is more appealing to traders who value a broader choice of account structures, a proprietary trading interface, and a broker with a long-established multi-jurisdiction presence.
That conclusion is not universal. The broker available to you, the legal entity that holds your account, your platform, account currency, trading volume, and whether you hold positions overnight can change the result. Both brokers offer leveraged CFDs, so neither is suitable for money you cannot afford to lose.
FxPro vs IC Markets at a glance
| Category | FxPro | IC Markets |
|---|---|---|
| Best known for | Multi-platform access, including its own FxPro platform | Low-cost execution for active forex and CFD traders |
| Main account approach | Account and pricing options vary by entity and platform | Standard spread-only and Raw Spread commission accounts |
| Platforms | FxPro platform, MT4, MT5, cTrader | MT4, MT5, cTrader and, in some regions, TradingView |
| Typical best fit | Discretionary traders wanting platform choice and a polished interface | Scalpers, algorithmic traders and high-volume forex users |
| U.S. availability | Generally not available to U.S. retail clients | Generally not available to U.S. retail clients |
| Key caution | Pricing can differ materially by entity and account type | Raw pricing still includes commission and other trading costs |
Do not treat this table as a substitute for the broker’s account application. Financial regulators restrict leverage, marketing, negative-balance protection, eligible products and compensation arrangements differently.
FxPro: strengths and weaknesses
Where FxPro stands out
FxPro gives traders access to several familiar platforms: MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and cTrader, alongside its proprietary FxPro interface. That matters if you want to move from manual trading to expert advisors or cBots without immediately changing brokers.

The proprietary platform is designed for traders who prefer a broker-managed web and mobile experience rather than the older MetaTrader interface. It can be convenient for monitoring positions, managing orders and accessing market information, although traders who rely on custom indicators or automated strategies will generally find MT4, MT5 or cTrader more flexible.
FxPro also has a long operating history and serves clients through different regulated companies. That may provide a wider choice of regional arrangements, but it creates an important comparison problem: the protections attached to a U.K., European, South African or offshore account are not identical.
Where FxPro may be weaker
FxPro’s pricing is less straightforward to summarize in one number. The spread or commission you see can depend on the instrument, platform, account type, quote currency and entity. A trader comparing a spread-only FxPro account with an IC Markets Raw Spread account is not comparing equivalent pricing models.
Some FxPro accounts may show commission-free trading with the broker’s compensation incorporated into the spread. Other arrangements may offer tighter quoted spreads with a separate commission. The correct comparison is the all-in cost:

all-in cost = spread cost + commission + overnight financing + conversion charges
FxPro can therefore be competitive for a particular instrument or trading style, but the headline “from” spread is not enough evidence that it is cheaper overall.
IC Markets: strengths and weaknesses
Where IC Markets stands out
IC Markets is particularly well known for its Raw Spread structure. Instead of placing the broker’s entire charge inside the spread, the account generally combines a market-based or near-market spread with a separate commission. This model is easy to understand for active traders because the cost can be calculated from trade size and turnover.

Its Standard account is simpler for traders who prefer not to calculate a separate commission: the broker incorporates its charge into the spread. The Raw Spread account is normally the more natural starting point for scalpers, high-frequency users and automated systems, provided the commission and financing costs work for the strategy.

IC Markets supports MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and cTrader. That is useful for expert advisors, custom indicators, backtesting and cTrader-based automation. MT5 is generally the better choice for traders who want newer platform features and access to a wider range of market types, while MT4 remains popular because of its large library of third-party tools.
Where IC Markets may be weaker
Low spreads do not guarantee low final costs. A Raw Spread account can be more expensive than a spread-only account for small trades, infrequent traders or positions held for several days. The commission is charged regardless of whether a trade closes at a profit.
IC Markets may also be less attractive to someone who wants a highly integrated proprietary platform. Traders who want broker-specific charting, account management and execution tools in one interface may prefer FxPro’s own platform over a MetaTrader or cTrader setup.
As with FxPro, the available entity matters. A brand’s global list of licences does not mean that your account receives all of those jurisdictions’ protections. Read the client agreement and check the legal company name before depositing money.

For active forex trading, IC Markets often has the stronger cost proposition because its Raw Spread account is designed around narrow spreads and a separately stated commission. That does not automatically make it cheaper for every customer.

- Choose the exact pair, such as EUR/USD.
- Compare the same account category: raw-with-commission against raw-with-commission, or spread-only against spread-only.
- Use the same trade size and account currency.
- Add the commission for both opening and closing the position.
- Include the expected spread at the time you trade, not only the minimum spread.
- Add overnight swap, currency conversion and any applicable funding charge.
For a trader making many short-term trades, a small difference in spread and commission can have a meaningful effect. For a trader making only a few trades each month, platform usability, execution reliability and withdrawal convenience may matter more than a fraction of a pip.
Platforms and automated trading
| Trader requirement | Likely advantage |
|---|---|
| Expert Advisors and MT4 indicators | Both brokers, subject to the account and entity |
| MT5 multi-asset functionality | Both brokers |
| cTrader interface and cBots | Both brokers where cTrader is offered |
| Proprietary broker platform | FxPro |
| Raw-spread automation setup | Often IC Markets, provided commission and execution suit the strategy |
Automation introduces risks that a demo account cannot fully reveal. Live spreads, slippage, rejected orders, liquidity during news and server latency can differ from backtest or demo results. Before running an Expert Advisor with real funds, check its behavior around market gaps, stop-loss orders and insufficient-margin events.

The important question is not simply “Is FxPro regulated?” or “Is IC Markets regulated?” Ask instead: Which company will be my counterparty?
A regulated entity may impose limits on retail leverage, segregate client money, provide negative-balance protection or participate in a compensation scheme. Those features can differ from an offshore entity under the same brand. The strongest protection is not necessarily available to every applicant.
Before opening an account, verify:
- the legal entity named in the application and client agreement;
- the regulator’s register entry, not only the broker’s logo;
- the maximum retail leverage and margin-closeout rules;
- whether negative-balance protection applies;
- how disputes and complaints are handled;
- the permitted deposit and withdrawal methods.
Neither broker should be assumed to accept U.S. retail clients. A website accessible from the United States does not establish that a U.S. resident is eligible to open a leveraged CFD account.
Account minimums and practical funding
Broker minimum-deposit policies change, and a stated minimum is not the same as a sensible trading balance. The amount needed depends on position size, stop-loss distance, leverage and the broker’s margin requirement.
A small deposit can be technically accepted but practically unusable. If the margin for your intended position consumes most of the account, a modest adverse move can trigger a margin warning or forced liquidation. Start with the broker’s margin calculator, then leave a buffer for spread widening and slippage.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.FxPro or IC Markets for beginners?
FxPro may be the more comfortable choice for a beginner who values a polished proprietary platform, educational material and a broad menu of trading interfaces. IC Markets may be better for a beginner who wants to learn the same raw-spread, commission-based structure used by many active forex traders.
For a new trader, the more important decision is usually account design. A spread-only account is easier to understand. A Raw Spread account can be cheaper, but only after the trader understands lot sizes, commission per side, swap and the effect of leverage.

Our verdict
Choose IC Markets if your priority is low-cost, active forex trading; you use MT4, MT5 or cTrader; or you run strategies where spread and commission are central to performance.
Choose FxPro if you prefer its proprietary platform, want a broad platform selection, or value the particular regulated entity and account terms offered in your country.
For most traders, the final decision should be made by comparing two live quotes and two client agreements—not by selecting the broker with the lowest advertised spread. Confirm the entity, calculate the all-in cost for your actual trade size, and test a small withdrawal before committing significant funds.

FAQ
Is FxPro better than IC Markets?
Neither broker is universally better. IC Markets is often the stronger choice for active traders focused on raw spreads and commission-based pricing. FxPro may suit traders who prefer its proprietary platform or the account and regulatory arrangement available in their jurisdiction.
Which broker has lower spreads, FxPro or IC Markets?
IC Markets is generally associated with very tight Raw Spread pricing, but a lower quoted spread does not necessarily mean a lower total cost. Compare spread, round-trip commission, swaps, conversion fees and execution for the exact instrument and account.
Are FxPro and IC Markets safe?
Both operate through regulated entities, but the protection depends on the specific company that onboards you. Check the legal entity, regulator, segregation rules, negative-balance protection and compensation arrangements before opening an account.
Can U.S. residents use FxPro or IC Markets?
U.S. residents should not assume either broker is available. Eligibility depends on the broker’s current licensing and application rules, and the existence of an international website does not establish access to a U.S. retail account.
Which is better for scalping?
IC Markets is often the more natural fit because its Raw Spread account is aimed at traders who prioritize tight spreads and transparent commissions. Scalpers should still test live execution, slippage during volatile periods and overnight or news-trading restrictions.
Does a Raw Spread account have no trading costs?
No. Raw pricing can reduce the spread, but the broker charges a separate commission, and traders may also pay swaps, currency conversion charges and instrument-specific fees.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: IC Markets is the better default for cost-sensitive, active and automated forex traders. FxPro is the better fit for traders who place more value on its proprietary platform and the particular legal entity and account terms available in their country. Compare the complete cost and protection package before deciding.
Leveraged CFDs can result in rapid losses. Use only risk capital, understand margin requirements and verify the broker’s current terms directly before depositing.
