Bitcoin and Ethereum are different networks built for different purposes. Bitcoin is designed primarily for peer-to-peer digital money. Ethereum is a programmable blockchain where smart contracts and decentralized applications run. Their native assets—bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH)—therefore serve different network roles; neither network’s design tells you which asset will rise in price.

Bitcoin vs. Ethereum at a glance

Question Bitcoin Ethereum
What is the network for? Peer-to-peer digital currency and value transfer. Programmable applications, including smart contracts and decentralized applications.
How does it reach agreement? Proof-of-work: miners use computation to compete to add blocks. Proof-of-stake: validators stake ETH and help propose or attest to blocks.
What governs supply? A predetermined issuance schedule and a protocol-enforced limit of 21 million BTC. No fixed supply cap. Validator issuance and the burning of some transaction fees both affect net supply.
What affects transaction costs? Fees and confirmation timing vary; Bitcoin.org describes blocks as averaging about 10 minutes. Gas fees respond to network demand through a dynamic fee market.
What is the practical question? Are you examining peer-to-peer value transfer? Are you examining a network for programmable applications and its broader ecosystem?

How their purposes differ

Bitcoin emphasizes peer-to-peer money

Bitcoin’s original design describes a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. The network records transactions on a public blockchain, with BTC as its native asset. See Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.

Ethereum is built for programmable applications

Ethereum also records activity on a public blockchain, but its core emphasis is broader than payments. Smart contracts are programs that execute on the network, allowing developers to build decentralized applications. Ethereum.org summarizes the distinction by saying, “Rather than limiting itself to payments, Ethereum allows anyone to write and publish self-executing programs called smart contracts.” Read its Ethereum vs Bitcoin comparison.

That is a difference in focus, not a claim that Bitcoin has no programmability whatsoever. Bitcoin supports scripts; Ethereum makes general-purpose smart contracts and applications central to the network’s design. Shared use of blockchain technology does not make BTC and ETH interchangeable.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

How consensus works—and what the energy comparison means

Bitcoin uses proof-of-work

Miners expend computing power and energy to compete to add blocks. This proof-of-work process is how Bitcoin reaches agreement on the transaction history.

Ethereum uses proof-of-stake

Ethereum switched from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake in September 2022. Validators stake ETH and participate in proposing or attesting to blocks. A solo validator requires a 32 ETH deposit; staking pools allow people to participate without holding that amount themselves. Staking introduces its own risks and is not automatically suitable for a first-time buyer. Ethereum.org explains the proof-of-stake process.

Ethereum.org estimates that the transition reduced Ethereum’s energy expenditure by approximately 99.98%. That is the organization’s estimate, not an independent audit or a measure of investment merit. Ethereum.org also notes that proof-of-stake is less time-proven than proof-of-work. Energy use alone does not establish that one network is categorically more secure or better for every user. See its proof-of-stake versus proof-of-work discussion.

How BTC and ETH supply differ

Bitcoin has a 21 million BTC limit

Bitcoin follows a predetermined issuance schedule, and its protocol limit is 21 million BTC. Bitcoin Core documentation explains that full validation rejects blocks that violate this limit. It is a network rule, not evidence that BTC’s market price must appreciate. See Bitcoin Core Validation.

Ethereum’s ETH supply changes with issuance and burning

Ethereum has no fixed ETH supply cap. Validators receive issuance, while a portion of transaction fees is burned. The net change depends on network activity and staking, so ETH is not permanently inflationary or permanently deflationary. The absence of a fixed cap does not mean ETH can be created without limits; issuance and burning follow network rules. Ethereum.org explains the supply distinction.

Fees and transaction timing are not fixed comparisons

On Ethereum, gas fees use a dynamic market that responds to demand. Proof-of-stake secures the network; it does not directly set transaction fees. See Ethereum.org’s proof-of-stake FAQ.

Bitcoin.org describes Bitcoin blocks as averaging about 10 minutes and explains that additional confirmations make reversing a transaction progressively harder. An average block interval is not a promise that a particular transaction will settle in 10 minutes. Actual fees and timing on both networks vary, so these mechanics do not establish that one is always cheaper or faster. See the Bitcoin FAQ.

What first-time buyers should understand about custody

Custody is a separate decision from choosing which network or asset to learn about. With self-custody, you control the wallet’s access credentials and must protect them and any recovery information. Bitcoin.org puts the benefit simply: “With Bitcoin, you can hold your money yourself instead of trusting a bank or company to hold it for you.” Its guidance also stresses wallet protection; see Bitcoin for Individuals.

How to use the comparison without treating it as an investment forecast

  • Start with the use case: Bitcoin is primarily focused on peer-to-peer value transfer; Ethereum centers on programmable applications.
  • Understand the network rules: Bitcoin has proof-of-work and a 21 million BTC limit; Ethereum has proof-of-stake and a dynamic ETH supply.
  • Consider practical needs such as the applications you want to understand, transaction costs, wallet compatibility, and who will control access to your assets.
  • Do not infer likely returns from a network’s purpose, consensus mechanism, energy use, or supply rule. Those features do not predict market price or investment outcome.
