Bitcoin is recorded on the blockchain; a wallet manages the private keys that authorize transactions. A recovery phrase can restore access to a wallet, so anyone who obtains it may be able to spend the associated bitcoin.
Choose who controls your Bitcoin
Your first decision is custody: hold the keys yourself or rely on a third party. With self-custody, you are responsible for protecting the keys and recovery materials. With a custodial exchange account, the provider manages the keys, so you depend on its security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. These are different allocations of risk, not simply two kinds of wallet.
| Setup | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hot software wallet | Routine spending and convenient access | Keys are used on an internet-connected phone or computer, increasing exposure to malware or device compromise. Keep only an amount appropriate for regular use. |
| Hardware wallet or other cold storage | Longer-term savings with keys kept offline | Requires operating a device and protecting its recovery backup; restoring safely depends on following the correct wallet-specific procedure. |
| Offline-signing setup | People able to manage a more technical arrangement | An offline computer signs transactions while a network-connected device broadcasts them. Setup and operating steps are more demanding, and the online computer should not hold signing capability. |
| Custodial exchange account | People prioritizing provider-managed access | You rely on the custodian’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies rather than controlling the keys directly. |
Bitcoin.org describes using a hot wallet for a small spending amount and cold storage for savings. For a self-custody choice, compare how keys are exposed to connected devices, how the wallet is restored, how safely you can confirm a transaction, where backups can be kept, and how much technical responsibility you can manage. Multisignature can require multiple independent approvals—for example, a 3-of-5 arrangement—but adds setup and recovery complexity, so it is not a default beginner feature. See Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin FAQ and wallet-security guidance.
Set up the wallet and backup before moving funds
Use the current documentation for the specific wallet you choose; backup formats and restore steps are not universal. Before transferring a significant amount, make sure you can answer these questions:

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- What exact backup format does the wallet use, and which compatible software or devices can restore it?
- Does the backup include everything needed, such as a separate passphrase or multisignature details?
- Where will each backup be kept so one fire, theft, or forgotten hiding place does not destroy every copy?
- Who, if anyone, should be able to locate the backup for estate recovery, without giving it to people who do not need access?
- Have you checked the documented recovery process without exposing the phrase to a website, stranger, or unsolicited support channel?
Bitcoin.org recommends multiple secure locations and durable backup media. Multiple copies can reduce the risk of losing access because of a single disaster, but each additional location is also another place an attacker could target. Do not assume a particular material or product is fireproof, waterproof, or indestructible without evidence for that product. Its guidance on backups and offline storage is at Securing your wallet.
Protect the recovery phrase like the keys
A recovery phrase is a sequence of words used to restore a wallet. It is not an ordinary password-reset code: anyone who gets the phrase may be able to access the bitcoin it controls. Keep it private and offline. Bitcoin.org warns: “Never store your recovery phrase as a photo or in a cloud service, and never share it with anyone.” Read its Bitcoin vocabulary and FAQ for definitions and security guidance.

- Never send it to support or enter it into an unsolicited recovery tool.
- Keep any written or otherwise recorded backup somewhere private and protected from likely loss or damage.
- Follow the wallet maker’s documented instructions if you need to restore access.
A hardware wallet does not remove the need for a secure recovery plan. For example, Bitcoin.org’s listing for the Trezor Safe 5 describes open-source firmware, on-device transaction confirmation, PIN and passphrase entry, and Multi-share Backup (SLIP-39). Its listing also says the owner remains responsible for securing and backing up the wallet. Bitcoin.org’s BitBox02 listing describes offline backups using a microSD card and a BIP39 mnemonic alongside its companion app. These listings illustrate different features and backup approaches; they do not establish that either device is right for every user. Check current product details, restore compatibility, and documentation before choosing a device.
Keep the backup current for the wallet you use
Wallet backup behavior varies. As a Bitcoin Core-specific example, Bitcoin.org says a single backup of an HD wallet can recover bitcoins, while periodic backups preserve labels and other metadata that a blockchain rescan cannot recover. It also advises making a fresh backup after encrypting the wallet or changing its passphrase because a new seed is generated. Those details apply to Bitcoin Core; follow the current instructions for your actual wallet. See Bitcoin Core requirements and warnings.

Recover carefully—and recognize when recovery is impossible
If a device is lost or damaged, use the legitimate wallet software and the wallet maker’s documented restore procedure with a backup you secured in advance. Do not improvise by typing the phrase into a search result, website, or tool suggested by an unsolicited message. There is no universal restore procedure that applies to every wallet.
If you lose access to a self-custodied wallet and have no usable key or recovery backup, a provider cannot reset it for you. Bitcoin.org states: “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.” A legitimate support service will not need your recovery phrase. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, so verify transaction details before sending; no legitimate person, business, or support team should ask for your phrase or require bitcoin payment to unlock funds. See Bitcoin.org’s things you need to know about Bitcoin.
