How to Check Whether a Zcash Wallet Supports a Network Upgrade

Confirm the exact wallet version and named Zcash upgrade with official release guidance or the wallet developer, then verify the address and transaction features you use.

To check whether a Zcash wallet supports a network upgrade, identify the exact wallet and its current version, then confirm support for the specific upgrade with the wallet’s developer or, for zcashd, against the official Zcash release guidance. Also check that the wallet supports the address types and transaction features you use: being able to use Zcash does not establish support for every upgrade or feature.

Why you need to check the specific wallet and upgrade

Zcash defines a network upgrade as “a software-updates-required release of the Zcash software” in its glossary. Nodes running incompatible older software may follow an outdated chain after an upgrade activates. The practical question is therefore not simply whether a wallet supports Zcash, but whether its software version is ready for the named upgrade.

The check differs by wallet type. zcashd is Zcash’s full-node software with an embedded wallet; independently developed mobile, desktop, and hardware wallets have their own release schedules and support decisions. Zcash’s general documentation does not certify every third-party wallet.

Check a Zcash wallet in five steps

  1. Write down the wallet name and version. Distinguish an embedded zcashd wallet from a separate app or device. Record the version shown in the app or device information; for zcashd, verify the version of the running software.
  2. Identify the exact network upgrade. Consult the Zcash Network Upgrade Guide and the release notes or specification for that upgrade. General recommendations and historical examples in the guide are not a substitute for requirements specific to a future or different upgrade.
  3. Look for an explicit compatibility statement. Check the wallet maker’s release notes, status page, or support information for the named upgrade and your wallet version. If the answer is not clear, ask the developer directly. For an upgrade-related error in a third-party app, the guide directs users to contact that product’s developer.
  4. Confirm the features you actually use. Ask whether the wallet handles the relevant transaction format and signing flow, and whether it supports your address type. The Zcash Feature UX Checklist treats support for shielded addresses as a capability that should be disclosed separately.
  5. Update using the provider’s instructions, then verify. For zcashd, follow the official update process and confirm that the running version matches the intended release. For another wallet, follow that provider’s app or device update procedure and check its version afterward. Back up before changing software: Zcash’s full-node and CLI documentation says wallet.dat contains wallet keys and transaction information and advises regular backups with private file permissions.

What to verify for zcashd

The official Zcash Full Node and CLI documentation explains how to check the installed and running software version and update it. Compare that version with the official release relevant to the upgrade; installing a release is not the same as verifying that the expected version is running.

The documentation also says a node that has not been upgraded within 16 weeks of a release reaches an end-of-support halt. That interval describes the documented support behavior for the node software; it is not a compatibility statistic for wallets generally.

What to verify for an independent app or device

For a third-party wallet, the provider is the authority on whether its particular version supports a named upgrade. Ask for a direct answer that identifies the upgrade and wallet version rather than relying on a general claim such as “supports Zcash.” Historic Zcash upgrades changed transaction formats, and the upgrade guide notes that hardware wallets and SPV clients can be affected. Those examples are a reason to check the named upgrade’s requirements—not evidence that a particular current product is incompatible.

Separate protocol readiness from feature availability. Confirm the address types and transaction flows you need, including shielded-address support where relevant. Also check how the provider communicates version numbers, upgrade notices, and post-upgrade status, and make sure you understand how to back up and recover the wallet.

The Zcash Recommended Wallets page says Electric Coin Company does not endorse specific digital wallets except the Zcashd full-node wallet. A listing or courtesy recommendation should not be treated as an endorsement or a guarantee that a wallet supports a particular upgrade.

If the answer is still unclear

  • Do not assume compatibility from the wallet’s ability to send or receive Zcash before the upgrade.
  • Pause activity that depends on the upgrade-sensitive feature until the provider confirms support.
  • Contact the wallet developer with the wallet name, version, upgrade name, and any error message. Ask whether the version supports the upgrade and the address or transaction features you need.

The Network Upgrade Guide also advises wallet operators to notify users and briefly pause transactions around activation. That is operator guidance, not a universal instruction that every individual user must follow; use the wallet provider’s specific notice for your wallet.
