What to Check Before Buying XRP: Wallets, Fees, and Custody

A practical XRP buying checklist: verify availability and total costs, choose custodial or self-custody storage, understand reserves, and check transfer details.

Before buying XRP, confirm the asset and network your platform supports, calculate the full purchase and withdrawal cost, and decide who will control the private keys. If you plan to move XRP, verify the destination address and whether the recipient requires a destination tag. These checks matter because XRP is a digital asset native to the XRP Ledger, while Ripple is a separate company; buying XRP does not give you ownership in Ripple. Ripple describes itself as a technology company and XRP as an open-source digital asset.

Check what you are buying and whether you can use the platform

XRP is the asset; Ripple is a company. Buying XRP is not buying Ripple shares. Before funding an account, confirm that the platform offers XRP where you live and supports the network you intend to use for withdrawals. Availability, withdrawal support, and terms can vary by country and provider. Ripple says it does not endorse or recommend exchanges, so check a platform’s current terms rather than treating a listing as an endorsement. Ripple’s FAQ provides that distinction.

Calculate the total cost, not just the trading fee

The amount you pay can include more than a stated commission. Review the live quoted price or spread, trading fee, deposit or payment-method charge, and any account fees. If you plan to withdraw XRP to a separate wallet, add the provider’s withdrawal charge. Custody services may also charge for transactions, transfers, annual account or asset-based costs, setup, or closure; the U.S. SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance lists these as fees investors should ask about in its December 12, 2025 staff bulletin. The bulletin is general U.S. crypto guidance, not XRP-specific advice or a binding Commission rule. Read the SEC staff bulletin.

These charges are separate from XRP Ledger transaction costs and reserves. The exact exchange cost depends on the provider, payment method, location, and current terms; compare the amount you would actually pay and receive before confirming an order.

Choose who controls the keys

Custody is about control, not whether an app looks like a wallet. In a custodial account, such as many exchange accounts, the provider controls the private keys. In self-custody, you control the keys and must protect the recovery information. XRPL documentation notes that custodial providers may offer password resets or assistance, but users depend on the provider; self-custody avoids that dependency while making the user responsible for access and recovery. XRPL’s wallet guide explains the distinction.

  • Custodial account: Convenient for trading and account recovery, but you rely on the provider’s security, solvency, withdrawal availability, and terms. Ask what happens if the provider is hacked, closes, or becomes insolvent; whether assets are insured and on what terms; who can access keys; and whether customer assets may be lent or commingled.
  • Software self-custody: You control the keys through wallet software, but must protect the device, software access, and recovery information. Verify exact XRP Ledger support and download only from an authentic source.
  • Hardware self-custody: A physical device can keep keys isolated from a connected computer or phone when not in use, but costs money and can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Verify XRP Ledger support for the exact model and understand how recovery works before relying on it.

Hardware versus software describes how keys are handled; custodial versus non-custodial describes who controls them. They are separate choices. You can keep a trading balance with a custodian and hold other XRP in self-custody.

Know how recovery works before choosing self-custody

A wallet manages keys that authorize transactions; it does not hold XRP like cash in a physical wallet. A recovery phrase may restore access if a device or software is lost, but anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to control the funds. Store it privately and securely, and never share it with someone claiming to be support. XRPL documentation warns that losing non-custodial keys can lock you out with no recovery option. See the XRPL explanation of wallet keys and recovery.

A hardware device does not eliminate the need to safeguard the recovery phrase or review what you approve. Ripple’s wallet documentation lists Ledger and Trezor in its retail wallet information, but that category-level listing does not establish support for every model or current product availability. Check the exact model’s current XRP Ledger support and use its official setup and recovery instructions. Ripple’s wallet documentation.

Separate XRPL reserves from fees

For XRPL Mainnet, the documentation lists a 1 XRP base reserve per account and a 0.2 XRP owner reserve per owned ledger object at access in 2026. These are network reserve requirements, not exchange fees or amounts paid to a provider. Validators can change reserve settings, and other XRPL networks may use different values, so check the current requirements before opening or funding an account. XRPL reserve documentation.

The standard minimum reference transaction cost documented for XRPL at access in 2026 is 10 drops (0.00001 XRP). Under network load, the required cost can increase. The XRP used for a submitted transaction is destroyed rather than paid to a validator or service provider. An exchange’s withdrawal fee is a separate charge, so check the exchange’s quoted withdrawal cost and the wallet’s current transaction estimate before sending. XRPL transaction-cost documentation.

Verify the network, address, and destination tag before transferring

  1. Confirm the network. Make sure both the sending platform and receiving wallet or exchange support the XRP Ledger network you intend to use. Do not assume that an XRP listing guarantees every withdrawal route is available.
  2. Copy the destination address from the recipient’s current instructions. Check it carefully before confirming the transfer.
  3. Check whether a destination tag is required. Some exchange-hosted XRP deposits use a tag to route funds to the right customer. Ask the receiving service and enter its exact instructions; do not guess or reuse a tag from another deposit.
  4. Consider a small test transfer. If fees and minimums make it practical, send a small amount first and wait for the recipient to confirm both arrival and crediting before sending more. A test reduces the amount at risk in an address or instruction mistake, but cannot guarantee against loss.

If a tag is missing or incorrect, contact the receiving provider; locating or crediting the funds may require its help. Ripple says it cannot reverse ledger transactions. Ripple’s FAQ covers destination tags and transaction errors.
