Its announced line-up spans a high-performance electric grand tourer, a seven-seat plug-in hybrid MPV and a plug-in hybrid SUV, with UK prices from £69,500 to £105,000. That makes the launch notable for its range and premium positioning—not yet for proven sales or a demonstrated challenge to German luxury brands.
Which Chinese car brand is coming to the UK?
It is DENZA, a premium brand within BYD Group. DENZA began in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz; BYD’s UK media release says it is now wholly owned by BYD. The brand has an official UK presence, and its UK site describes a launch at Goodwood.
That background links DENZA to a familiar European marque, but it does not make today’s cars Mercedes-Benz products. BYD says German designer Wolfgang Egger guides DENZA’s design direction. Those are points of corporate history and design positioning, not evidence of how the cars compare in quality or ownership experience.
Is DENZA on sale in the UK?
DENZA has announced UK prices and opened orders for the D9, while the Z9 GT is the model spearheading its UK launch. The brand’s July and August 2026 releases set out three models, but their delivery schedules differ: the BAO 5’s first customer deliveries are due in early 2027, and the Z9 GT plug-in hybrid is due to join the electric version later. The announcements do not establish that all three models are already being delivered.

Prices and specifications in the table are from DENZA’s UK releases: the Z9 GT announcement [c001](https://www.denza.co.uk/media/press-releases/denza-z9-gt-uk-pricing-specification/) and the D9 and BAO 5 announcements [c002](https://www.denza.co.uk/media/press-releases/denza-d9-and-bao-5-uk-pricing/). They are announced manufacturer figures, not independent test results. MRRP means manufacturer’s recommended retail price; the releases do not establish what a particular buyer will pay after any dealer offers, options or other charges.
How much does the DENZA Z9 GT cost, and what does it offer?
DENZA calls the Z9 GT the model leading its UK launch. The battery-electric version is listed at £105,000 MRRP; the later-arriving DM plug-in hybrid starts at £95,000 MRRP. The EV’s quoted specification is ambitious: a 122kWh battery, 1,156PS, 0–62mph in 2.7 seconds and a 167mph top speed. DENZA says the tri-motor layout uses one motor at the front and two at the rear. Its 373-mile figure is a claimed combined-cycle WLTP range, not a guarantee of the distance a driver will cover in UK conditions.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
For the DM plug-in hybrid, DENZA quotes 776PS and 0–62mph in 3.6 seconds, alongside up to 126 miles of electric-only driving and 500 miles total range with a full battery and full petrol tank. As with the EV figures, these are the manufacturer’s claims rather than independent road-test results.
Charging claims need the right context
DENZA says its FLASH Charging can take the Z9 GT from 10% to 70% in five minutes, or from 10% to 97% in nine minutes, at charging speeds of up to 1,500kW. It says the nine-minute charge adds 323 miles of WLTP range and claims a 20% to 97% charge in 12 minutes at −30°C. These are specific manufacturer claims. The UK release does not establish that compatible chargers capable of delivering those speeds are available nationwide, so the figures should not be treated as a typical stop at any UK rapid charger.

Chassis, manoeuvring and cabin equipment
The Z9 GT release describes a dedicated e³ platform, rear-wheel steering, crab-walk movement and a 360-degree compass turn, as well as a 5.35m turning radius. DENZA also claims a tyre-blowout mitigation response that operates at speeds up to 112mph. Listed cabin features include Nappa leather, heated, ventilated and massage functions, and a 20-speaker, 1,150W Devialet sound system. The release establishes what the brand says is fitted or supported; it is not an independent assessment of how these features perform or whether they justify the price.
What do the D9 and BAO 5 add to the range?
D9: a premium seven-seat plug-in hybrid
The D9 is aimed at buyers who need space for up to seven people rather than a performance-focused grand tourer. DENZA’s 5 August 2026 UK release says it is available to order in Elegance and Ultimate trims, priced at £75,000 and £85,000 MRRP respectively. It lists a 58.5kWh battery, up to 130 miles of electric-only driving and up to 590 miles total range.
Rank #4
DENZA also lists FLASH Charging, powered sliding doors, a powered tailgate and a 15.6-inch touchscreen. The Ultimate adds features including second-row “zero-gravity” seats that recline up to 152 degrees, and heating and ventilation across all three rows. These are manufacturer-described features; the release does not supply independent evaluations of comfort or real-world range.
BAO 5: a plug-in hybrid SUV with off-road hardware
The BAO 5 is listed at £69,500 MRRP for Elegance and £78,880 for Ultimate. DENZA quotes 544PS, up to 56 miles of electric range and 519 miles of combined range, and says first customer deliveries are due in early 2027. The model uses the brand’s DMO plug-in hybrid system and a ladder-frame chassis. The Ultimate trim adds DiSus-P suspension, with up to 140mm of ride-height adjustment, according to DENZA’s 28 July 2026 UK announcement [c002](https://www.denza.co.uk/media/press-releases/denza-d9-and-bao-5-uk-pricing/). No independent off-road comparison or test is established by that announcement.

What makes DENZA different from BYD?
DENZA is not a separate rival to BYD Group; it is BYD’s premium marque. The UK announcements position it above a simple low-price proposition, emphasizing performance, cabin equipment and specialist features across three very different vehicle types. That breadth is significant for a new UK entrant: the range is not limited to one electric hatchback or SUV, but includes an EV, plug-in hybrids, a seven-seat people carrier and an off-road-oriented SUV.
The brand’s origin also carries a European connection. BYD says DENZA was founded with Mercedes-Benz in 2010 and is now wholly owned by BYD; T3’s 4 March 2026 preview framed the UK arrival as an attempt to compete with premium brands including Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche [c003](https://www.t3.com/vehicle-tech/electric-vehicles/another-chinese-car-brand-is-coming-to-the-uk-and-it-might-be-the-most-significant-yet). That framing describes the competitive ambition, not a market result. Pricing and product announcements alone cannot show that buyers will switch or that the cars match established alternatives in ownership experience.
Is DENZA the most significant Chinese car launch yet?
“Most significant yet” is a plausible proposition to examine, not a proven verdict. DENZA’s UK launch stands out in the evidence available for its premium price points, high claimed specifications and three-model spread. Its history also gives it a distinct story from a newly created brand with no European connection.
But UK pricing and announcements do not establish sales, customer acceptance, dealer reach, service quality, warranty coverage, residual values or long-term reliability. Nor do the manufacturer’s range and performance claims substitute for independent UK road tests. A buyer comparing DENZA with German premium cars should wait for evidence on those points rather than treating launch specifications as a complete ownership comparison.
Quick Recap
What should UK buyers check before comparing a DENZA?
- Price and trim: Compare the quoted MRRP for the specific model and grade with the final written offer, including any options and charges.
- Powertrain and use: Decide whether an EV or plug-in hybrid suits your journeys, charging access and need for long-distance flexibility. The quoted electric-only range is a manufacturer figure, not a promise of your own result.
- Charging access: Ask which equipment and charging rates apply to the UK vehicle and what compatible public charging is realistically available on routes you use.
- Delivery timing: Confirm the expected date for the exact model and trim in writing; announced launch timing is not the same as a confirmed delivery slot.
- Ownership support: Check warranty terms, servicing arrangements, parts availability and roadside assistance directly with the seller. The cited UK announcements do not establish comparable terms.
- Independent evidence: Look for road tests and owner experience before relying on range, comfort, performance or off-road claims.
