To set up an XRP Ledger wallet safely, first decide whether a provider will hold the keys or you will. Then obtain wallet software from its official source, create or restore an account through its documented process, protect its recovery secret, check the network’s reserve requirements before funding, and review every transaction before signing. A hardware wallet or offline signing setup can add protection, but neither removes the need to safeguard recovery material and verify what you approve.
Choose who controls your XRP Ledger keys
A wallet is the way you access and authorize transactions for an XRP Ledger account; the key question is who controls the signing keys. The XRP Ledger’s wallet guidance distinguishes custodial services from non-custodial wallets.
| Arrangement | Who holds the keys | Recovery and responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial provider | The provider controls the keys. | The provider may offer account recovery, subject to its own policies and security. You rely on the provider to protect access and process transactions. |
| Non-custodial wallet | You control the secret used to authorize transactions. | You are responsible for protecting the secret and backup. If you lose access to the secret, the XRP Ledger cannot restore it for you. |
Neither arrangement eliminates security risk. With custody, assess the provider and its account protections; with self-custody, your recovery practices are essential. Choose before transferring XRP, because the responsibilities differ.
Get the wallet from a trustworthy source
Install a wallet only from its official website or verified app-store listing, reached independently rather than through a message or unsolicited link. Wallet software and its dependencies can introduce supply-chain risks, according to the XRP Ledger wallet documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Check the publisher and domain carefully; lookalike names and links can lead to fraudulent software or sites.
- Use the wallet’s own documented setup or recovery flow.
- Never enter a seed or private key into a site claiming it must “validate,” “sync,” or “unlock” your account, or give it to a support agent.
Create the account and protect its recovery secret
Follow the wallet’s documented instructions to create a new account or restore an existing one. Depending on the wallet, the secret may be presented as a seed, private key, or other recovery material. Anyone who obtains the relevant secret may be able to sign transactions for the account. The XRP Ledger’s cryptographic keys guidance explains why these secrets must remain private.
- Record the recovery material carefully and verify it as the wallet instructs.
- Keep a backup offline in a location protected from theft, damage, and unauthorized access.
- Do not put the secret in email, chat, screenshots, ordinary cloud notes, or a website. XRPL advises against sending secret keys over the internet and recommends encrypted storage when secrets must be saved.
- Do not share it with anyone, including people claiming to represent the wallet provider or the XRP Ledger.
Applied XRP Ledger transactions cannot be reversed by a privileged administrator. A lost self-custody secret can therefore mean permanent loss of access, and disclosure can give someone else transaction authority. The XRPL key documentation covers the role of cryptographic keys.

Choose a signing setup that fits your needs
| Setup | What it changes | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Software wallet | Wallet software handles account access and signing on a connected device. | Convenient to access, but security depends on the device, software, and how the key is stored and used. |
| Hardware signing device | A separate physical device keeps signing keys on the device. | Can separate keys from a general-purpose computer, but compatibility, device availability, backup protection, and transaction review still matter. |
| Air-gapped signing | Transaction signing takes place on a machine kept offline; signed transaction data is transferred to a connected device. | Reduces the signing machine’s direct internet exposure but adds complexity, transfer-media risks, software-integrity concerns, and physical-security demands. |
XRPL’s secure-signing guidance describes dedicated signing devices, including the Ledger Nano S, and notes that device support for transaction types may vary. Check the current manufacturer and wallet documentation for the specific device and transactions you expect to use; do not assume every model supports every transaction type. Hardware protects the signing key while it is on the device, not the recovery backup or your judgment when approving a transaction.
Check reserves before funding an account
The XRP Ledger requires account reserves under its ledger rules. The XRPL reserves documentation, reviewed in 2026, listed Mainnet values of a 1 XRP base reserve and 0.2 XRP owner reserve for each owned ledger object. These protocol settings can change and may differ on other networks; check the current values for the network you plan to use before sending XRP. A reserve is not a wallet-provider fee.

Because the owner reserve is tied to ledger objects, the amount subject to reserve requirements may depend on what the account owns on-ledger. Do not treat the listed figures as a permanent funding rule or assume they apply to every XRPL network.
Review transactions before signing
Use a trusted wallet and signing device, and inspect the transaction details shown to you before approving. XRPL’s secure-signing documentation warns against configurations that expose secret keys to outside sources. A public server can be used to monitor public ledger activity without sending it your signing secret; monitoring and signing are distinct activities.
Rank #4
- Do not paste or upload a seed or private key to a browser, public server, support chat, or “verification” tool.
- Pause if a request or transaction is unexpected, or if the wallet asks for a secret in a context not described by its official documentation.
- Read the transaction details on the trusted device or wallet screen before authorizing it.
Use offline signing only if you can secure the whole process
Air-gapped signing is an advanced arrangement, not a shortcut that makes key management automatic. The XRPL offline account setup tutorial describes creating and signing transactions on an offline machine, then transferring signed transaction data to an online machine for submission. The offline device, software, transfer media, and physical access all remain security concerns.
Removable media can carry malicious files or be mishandled, and an offline computer can still be compromised before it is disconnected or through unsafe software. Follow a documented process, keep the signing environment physically controlled, and use this approach only if you can manage those operational demands.
