Why the Video Game Industry Is Seeing So Many Layoffs

The 2026 GDC survey finds widespread layoffs among respondents, but no single cause or comprehensive job-loss count. Company explanations include restructuring, budgets, market conditions and canceled projects.

There is no single cause. Game companies cite restructuring, budget cuts, market conditions, canceled projects and strategic changes; workers also point to management decisions and wider economic pressures. The latest Game Developers Conference (GDC) survey shows layoffs affecting many respondents, but it is not a census of all game workers and cannot establish exactly how many jobs were lost—or assign a definitive share of the layoffs to any one cause.

How widespread are game industry layoffs?

The 2026 GDC State of the Game Industry survey, which covered more than 2,300 professionals, found that 28% of respondents had personally been laid off in the prior two years: 17% in the most recent 12 months and 11% in the 12 months before that. Among US respondents, 33% reported a layoff during the two-year period. Separately, half said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the previous year. These are self-reported survey results, not a count of people or jobs eliminated across the industry. (GDC overview; 2026 report)

The annual figures show the pattern has persisted, but they should not be read as a precise year-over-year trend. In the 2025 GDC survey, 11% of developers said they had been laid off in the preceding year. Survey samples and question wording may differ between years, and the respondents are not necessarily the same people. (2025 survey coverage)

Why are game companies cutting jobs?

Among respondents affected by layoffs, the 2026 GDC survey asked which reasons their current or former company had given; respondents could select up to three. The most frequently reported explanations were restructuring, budget cuts, market conditions, project cancellations and a change in strategic direction.

Company-stated reason Share of affected respondents reporting it
Company restructuring 43%
Budget cuts 38%
Market conditions 38%
Project canceled 32%
Strategic direction change 31%

These percentages overlap because respondents could choose multiple reasons; they are not shares of all layoffs. The report says the percentages were higher than in the prior year, likely in part because this question was limited to people affected by layoffs. (GDC, 2026 State of the Game Industry report)

Restructuring, budgets and market conditions can reinforce one another

The listed reasons describe different parts of a company’s decision. A weaker outlook or tighter budget can prompt a restructuring; a canceled project can leave fewer roles to fund; a strategic shift can move spending away from one team or product. The survey records the explanations workers say their companies gave, rather than independently verifying each company’s finances or decisions.

Post-pandemic hiring is part of the context, not a complete explanation

The report places the layoffs after COVID-era investment and hiring and notes that workers had hoped for a “course correction” after the post-pandemic surge. It does not quantify how much of the current wave resulted from that expansion. It would therefore be too strong to attribute the layoffs to pandemic over-hiring alone.

What do workers say is driving the wave?

In more than 1,200 open responses, workers also assigned responsibility to mismanagement and greed, unrealistic expectations, tariffs and other global economic issues, and AI adoption. These are workers’ perspectives, not an independently established breakdown of causes. The survey does not show that AI is the principal reason for the layoffs or determine what share of job cuts is attributable to any one factor. (GDC, 2026 report)

Are layoffs affecting AAA and indie studios differently?

Company-level layoffs were more commonly reported by AAA respondents: two-thirds said their company had layoffs, compared with one-third of respondents at indie studios. Those figures measure whether a respondent’s employer conducted layoffs, not the chance that any individual worker was laid off. They should not be confused with the survey’s separate measure of personal layoff experience. (GDC, 2026 report)

What happens to workers after a layoff?

Finding another job can take time. Among respondents who had been laid off, 48% said they had not found another job. Even among those laid off one to two years earlier, 36% still reported not finding another job. These are survey responses, not a measurement of unemployment across all game workers. (GDC, 2026 report)

The outlook is also a concern for people trying to enter the field: 74% of respondents to a smaller student survey said they were worried about future job prospects in the industry. GDC said students pointed to limited entry-level roles, competition from more experienced laid-off workers and possible displacement associated with AI. (GDC, 2026 report)

What the numbers can—and cannot—tell you

  • They show a serious pattern among respondents. The 2026 survey captures widespread personal and company-level exposure to layoffs.
  • They do not give a global job-loss total. A respondent’s layoff experience is not the same as an audited count of positions eliminated.
  • They do not prove one cause. Company explanations overlap, and workers’ open-response views are not causal measurements.
  • They do not establish how much any one economic or business factor contributed. The report does not provide a causal breakdown for factors such as acquisitions, interest rates, pandemic-era hiring or game budgets.
